HTC Hero :: USB Tethered Internet For Mac?
Jul 3, 2010
I'm using a mac and I just learned that tethered internet is only capable on a PC using HTC Sync. I was wondering if anyone knew a work around. I would prefer if the work around is free.

Buddy of mine rooted his EVO 4G and added tethering app. He showed me how I could connect my Samsung Captivate to his EVO via Wifi and surf using his cell (3G) connection. To my knowledge, he was connected using only 3G (no 4G signal there). However, page loads were MUCH faster on my phone when tethered to his phone than when I use my own AT&T 3G connection.

Should I be able to make or answer phone calls on my non-rooted EVO while USB tethered to my pc without losing my Internet connection on the pc? It seems like I could at first, but now I cannot.
And ironically, we decided to drop our land line last month. Now its like I've been plunged back into the 90's dialup days of can't be on the phone and Internet at the same time!

Has anyone done this with a standard HTC Desire.I've read this can only be done with a rooted unit which I don't want to do.I have a standard T mobile unit which I would prefer not fiddling with as I'm not tech savvy.

Out of curiosity is anyone getting wildly different results from their handsets speedtests vs their actual download throughput? On 4G when I do a Speedtest using either the FCC's or Speedtest.net application I fall between 200-250K/sec, if I'm lucky regardless of server. Often less. Upload always seems to pin exactly at 1mb/sec regardless of my signal. On the other hand when I tether I consistently get 300K/sec. I'm starting to wonder if the Sprint Hotpot application caps at 300K/sec?Is there something wrong with the Speedtest app? People I can compare with here at work get better speeds on their iPhones 3G using the handset test but get AWFUL, terrible speeds tethering with their iPhones. Is there a reason the speedtests app do so poorly? Anyone have any idea if the Hotspot App caps throughput?

I'm pleased to announce a very quick, hacked together proxy server approach which should let you browse the web (just the web, not the whole internet) from your PC via your tethered device.
I've tested on Windows & Linux and there's no reason (that I can see) that it wont work from a mac.
However, this is highly experimental and somewhat tricky to set up. It's also my first ever Android app and was built from scratch in the last few hours.

Let me know how you get on! I'd love to see how it performs on a 3g network.

Seems to be some confusion on this issue. Do you know if there is a way to get the X10 to act as a "modem" of sorts when tethered, so I can use my laptop in remote areas where there is no land line or WiFi access (but you can get a cell phone signal).

I just recently started using pdanet when my high speed internet connection at home was having issues. Oddly i found it to be very fast and work pretty flawlessly from my droid. My question is during the summer i have a 2nd home which has no option for high speed connections, but does get 3g Verizon. I mostly would use my laptop for reading emails and teaching online classes through my college. Has anyone on Verizon ever had issues using bandwidth through a tethered device as i described? I know there is this on going battle of whether our unlimited plans are truly unlimited or not. I would not use massive loads of data but i do not want to incur problems with my service either. Love to hear your opinions.

most uk networks who say that their plans include unlimited internet allowance actually have a limit of 500mb per month. i am on o2's pay as you go and i get unlimited internet on my phone for each month that i top up 15. i used my laptop to tether my phone's wifi once and ended up wuth a huge bill when i found out that the "unlimited internet" was actually 500mb. if you are listening to internet radio all the time or watching online videos then this 500mb is not enough. so my question is are there any networks who actually do provide unlimited internet allowance for your hero?

I've got no wireless network at work, but sometimes want to connect my ipod touch to the itunes store to get new tunes. I've heard it's possible to use the 3G on my hero to route my ipod touch and get online - is this true? And if so, anyone know how it's done?

I recently purchased an HTC Hero and expected to be able to use it to connect my computer to the internet as I did with my last phone... unfortunately the computer isn't recognizing my phone as a mobile device. I spoke w/ an HTC techy and he said my operating system
(XP - service pack 3) isn't compatible with the phone.

I switched from WM6.1 to HTC Hero. With ActiveSync, my phone can access the Internet through the PC's Internet connection. But I cannot do so with HTC Sync. Can I get my phone access the Internet through the PC connection, without connecting to Wi-Fi or 3G?

A friend of mine has just bought one, and cannot connect to the internet using his SIM card at all. He can receive calls fine but for some reason the mobile internet does not work even though his SIM is enabled for it. His phone does not have Market, but SlideMe, which suggests it is a Malaysian Hero (I think)? I don't know if this is the reason.
I tried my SIM card in his Hero and, again, it will not connect to mobile internet. I checked the settings and under Mobile Network Settings/Access Point Names there is nothing and none of the fields are completed (I never had to set this up on my Hero, it was automatically completed by my SIM Card/Provider once switched on).

Just have a question regarding the HTC Hero. I'm planning to buy an unlocked version of the phone (I current reside in Canada), and I know the 3G will not work. However, I also live near my university campus (with campus-wide wifi). So I'm thinking to get the phone but not get any data plan (so not EDGE) and primarily connect to the internet through wifi. (Until I leave campus anyway) So I know at times I might not be able to connect to the internet. so how would this effect my daily uses for the phone? Such as...
1) Can I update my calendar app with all the details before I leave home and it'll still remember all the events/details without having to connect the internet again?
2) Can I update the weather app, and then it'll remember the info even without the internet?
