Sprint HTC Hero :: Native Messaging / Handcent / Chomp SMS?
Dec 4, 2009Curious about people's thoughts about these different messaging options. Removing / barring the pre-update issues with the native messaging app on the phone, which one of these do you prefer? I am currently using the native app, seems fine to me, I like that I can link contacts to FB etc. Not necessarily looking for something that plagiarize's the iPhone messenger (cartoon bubbles), but I am always open to something new if it is better than the app preloaded on the phone. If you don't use the native app, is there a widget for Handcent or Chomp (like the native) to make viewing and responding easy?

Dec 19, 2009I was looking at the searches for chomps vs handcent, but didn't see anything for the sprint version of this. I am going to get a Hero very soon (switching from a Palm Pre) and so was just wondering what you use? Are there any pro's or con's to using Handcent or Chomp? (battery life, speed, crashes, quick replying, etc)

Oct 24, 2010Stock messaging app has become very laggy with over 3000 messages, some spawning threads of around 800 messages.Also, deleting them, while being an option, shouldn't be necessary. I delete all of my messages at the start of a new billing cycle and that's how it's always been with my smartphones, so none of those suggestions please For those of you who use 3rd party SMS apps, with large amounts of text messages, do you notice any of them being laggy?

Aug 12, 2010I apologize for posting this but I've been looking for an answer to this question for a while. I posted this in someone elses thread but I figured this deserved it's own post since it's pretty much a deal breaker for me. Hopefully someone has the answer for me. Thanks in advance. "I've been looking for a reliable messaging app since I got my incredible, but I always stuck with the stock sms. The reason being is one HUGE glitch scared me away from handcent. the glitch where it would randomly send a text message to the wrong person from your contact list and pretty much pick a random contact to send the sms to. I can't really have that happen since I use my phone as my work phone and personal phone. It would be a VERY bad situation if a text message I was sending my girlfriend was randomly sent to someone from work or a customer. I've seen people posting about this glitch earlier this year but I've never seen anyone confirm whether it not the glitch has been fixed or still exists? It's not something I want to risk. I guess my reason for posting this is I am very curious to find out if that glitch has been fixed. I would LOVE to use hand cent or chomp but I would like some confirmation as to whether or not that glitch is no more. Can anyone confirm this?"

Oct 29, 2009Is there a way to receive pictures from Chomp SMS? I had this set as my default text app (due to battery issues with the stock message app). I was sent a photo attached to a text message but it said that the mms did not down load. I couldn't figure out how to view it so I had to go into the stock message app and download the photo. Is there a way to view from ChompsSms instead of having to use the stock app?

I listen to a lot of music, and just had a really bad experience with the HTC Desire (lots of hiss and network interference).
The Samsung S looks the business, but poor audio will be a deal breaker when it comes to moving from my iPhone 3G.

Oct 27, 2009I've just downloaded handcent sms for my hero and am so far pretty impressed with its features apart from the fact that every time I receive an sms I get 2 notifications and 2 copies of the message - 1 in hancent and 1 in the original sms application. My question is how do I set handcent as my default sms receiver and get rid of the original from my homescreen? I have a shortcut on my homescreen which still shows that i have messages even though I've read them in handcent, and I don't know how to get rid of the original app from there.

Aug 22, 2010When the app starts up it shows the activity label property in the title bar. If you set a different title for the activity in onCreate that will show up later. You see the launcher activity title for a while and then the programmatic title replaces it, which is not very nice visually. The icon on the home screen uses the label for the activity. What I'm trying to do is get a label for the icon on the home screen that is different from the activity title bar. I tried setting the intent- filter label, but that didn't appear under the home screen icon. There is a label property for the application, the activity, and the intent-filter. The activity label is shown for the icon and the title and the other label properties are not shown.

One theory is that the 2.1 signal values are different and thus report a difference in signal in the bars and in settings.

Nov 30, 2009Anyone having problems with receiving MMS on Handcent, Is there a setting I am not finding to help with this. If someone sends me a slideshow, all I get is a pic with a "play" button. When I hit the button nothing happens. Should I delete program and start all over? What are your Handcent settings?

Sprint HTC Hero :: Handcent Replaced With A Red X Instead
Nov 12, 2009Ive noticed that when i shut my phone off and turn it back on after this recent update from hand cent sms, i loose the hand cent icon and it is replaced with a red x instead. has anyone else had this issue? the only way Ive been able to fix it is with a un install and then reinstall which is a royal pain in the ass given that i don't restart my phone very often i still have to customize all over again.

But for some wierd reason, I chose to use the stock SMS the other day, and realized the lag was greatly reduced. Now, has anyone else experience this also?by the way, I am using Better Keyboard rather then using the stock keyboard.Besides the landscape typing lag, Handcent was a cool SMS App. I liked it a lot more than ChompSMS.

Nov 27, 2009Tho it seems the update did fix the problem with the native app, Handcent is still the way to go, at least for me. Seems the native app can't handle more than a 1 meg pic file and since I often include a pic in a text, taken from the Hero its of no use to me. Handcent will reduce the pic file automatically which is a nice feature. Also I refuse to lower the setting from the Hero just to accommodate the native app. Just my thought on that issue.
