Sprint HTC Hero :: Pros And Cons Of Chomp And Handcent?
Dec 19, 2009
I was looking at the searches for chomps vs handcent, but didn't see anything for the sprint version of this. I am going to get a Hero very soon (switching from a Palm Pre) and so was just wondering what you use? Are there any pro's or con's to using Handcent or Chomp? (battery life, speed, crashes, quick replying, etc)

I'm coming back to Android and getting my Hero soon. Is there anything I NEED to know before I get it? Pros and cons of rooting? Must have apps? Bugs and fixes? Or anything else I should know?

I'm looking for a little bit of opinion and a little bit of inside info (if anybody's got any) with regards to upgrading hardware. As everyone is aware, the Hero came out in October 2009, meaning that in a few short weeks, anyone who purchased the Hero at launch (at least those with "Premium" standing) is eligible for a hardware upgrade. I have been on the fence about pulling the trigger on upgrading to an Evo (as I'm sure quite a few people are as well). I've taken a look at some of the pros and cons and I'm still weighing my decision on those. I'm not going to go into the pros and cons because that's not the goal of this post. I understand fully that technology, especially in the world of smartphones, is a very fluid animal and that "the next big thing" is always around the corner. No matter what you do, anytime you purchase a phone/computer/etc, it's obsolete within 3-4 months, and sometimes sooner. I can accept that. What I would like to avoid, is upgrading my phone and on the 31st day (the day after you can return it) have Sprint announce that the next big thing is around the corner and will be released in November/December. I've done some research over the past few weeks, and I can't seem to find any information on any new phones coming to Sprint, so I was hoping that the fine people in the forum could provide guidance. I haven't even really heard any rumors with regards to the next Android phone coming to Sprint.

I know their are plenty of topics about how to root, what it does, and roms and everything. But I and others are a still a bit concerned I am sure. If you don't plan on helping or contributing to this then don't say their are plenty of topics on the site and other websites. I have read the forum on xda developers on how to root the CDMA Hero, but I am still a bit confused. If you root what are some benefits, I have heard sometimes the device runs alot faster and snappier, and I have heard it is slow and sluggish. Also what are some other things that can be tweaked/customized, I would want to do this to screen capture, change to a white taskbar, and maybe try and add a rom. What is the best method to changing Roms, what program do I need? Also is it possible that if I were to change roms to go back to the stock rom and stock settings without bricking or screwing up my phone. If anyone can give me the best method, and a 2.0 or 2.1 rom for the hero, I don't care if HTC sense is on their or not. I like 2.1 without it. Anyone who can give details on why I should, shouldn't would be greatly appreciated and I am sure many people would too. Anything that gives or lists benefits and things you can do if you root would be great. Also a link to the best forum or youtube video that gives detailed responses on step by step instructions on how to root for the Sprint CDMA Hero.

Let's say the user starts with a 16GB, class 6 SD card. What are the benefits of storing apps to the SD card? Does it let the phone run smoother? Does it allow you to install more apps on your phone? What are the cons? Do apps take longer to open/load? Is there a risk of damaging the SD card and/or the phone? If someone could explain this to me as thoroughly as possible.

Curious about people's thoughts about these different messaging options. Removing / barring the pre-update issues with the native messaging app on the phone, which one of these do you prefer? I am currently using the native app, seems fine to me, I like that I can link contacts to FB etc. Not necessarily looking for something that plagiarize's the iPhone messenger (cartoon bubbles), but I am always open to something new if it is better than the app preloaded on the phone. If you don't use the native app, is there a widget for Handcent or Chomp (like the native) to make viewing and responding easy?

I have an unlocked, unbranded Hero (bought without a SIM, currently being used with a 3 UK SIM) and am waiting (patiently) for notification when an update is available. Nothing has arrived on my phone and I can't see anything relevant on the HTC Support website. Meanwhile I understand that many Hero users have already been able to upgrade and so have presumably experienced the pros and cons of the upgrade. Googling for information I find a number of reports of "issues", especially with the Sprint version of the Hero. Do people generally find that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

With all the available roms, id like to know what are the pro's & cons of each, such as features, apps, and flaws, and "why" do you feel one rom is better over the other. Please be detailed, not just "this rom is the best".

For those of you who have switched from a storm to a droid what are the pros and cons? Do you regret the switch?
I am about to make the switch myself and I was wondering if there are any must have apps for a former BB user. I use quicklaunch and berrybuzz and crunch SMS a lot. Are there similar programs?
Lastly I was a crackberry user and frequented there app store. Is there and equivalent? I found the crackberry store sometimes had apps BB app world didn't have.

Has anybody blogged about this comparison, or does anyone want to give it a shot here? Would be nice to see some reasoned thoughts on Adobe AIR on Android vs. the "native" Android SDK (in Java). Edit: Despite few views and no answers, I'm leaving this question up here since it's a topic that needs to be covered at some point but if it gets no attention I'll delete it in a few days.

I have been tasked with updating my teams dev. environment. This environment will be used to develop and test J2ME and Android mobile applications. I am looking at NetBeans 6.8 and Eclipse 3.6. Do you have any recommendations for why either of these would be good or bad for this? (aka mobile plugin problems, compatibility issues, ease of setup/maintenance for team members, high quality mobile dev. support, etc.)

I've had my Droid for about 4 months now and I love it. I came from a long line of BB's so it's refreshing. But I get tired very quickly of having limits I guess. I don't know whether to go Droid X, wait for Froyo release or Root my Droid. I know it's a smaller processor in my Droid but it's not exactly SLOW. I have pdaNET and don't need to Root due to tethering. I just want something a little quicker. Pros and Cons are what I am after?

I was wondering, would I only be able to take advantage of my phone (were I to root it) from my computer at home as far as making changes that I can't do now, or will I be able to do a lot of it from my phone too? I ask because I have more time to use my phone than my computer since I'm away from home working a lot of hours during the week. I am also nervous that I might mess my phone up if I root it, or that it will need warranty replacement after being rooted and be broken to the point that I can't undo that before I take it in. I am not a tech expert or computer nerd but I can follow directions and I'm far from technically challenged. I don't doubt I could do that if I wanted to. I'm just not sure if rooting is for me, although I think a lot of stuff I want to do I can't without rooting, I just hope I don't get in over my head.

I was wondering if anyone could help me make my decision between the HTC Incredible, the Droid 2 and the Droid X. I'm leaning towards the Droid X at this point over the Droid 2, because the physical keyboard seems superfluous. I type much more quickly on my iPod Touch than I do on my phone, which has a physical qwerty on it. I'm hoping Swype and a bigger screen will make it even better. For that reason, the Droid 2 is kind of a long shot, in my opinion.
Alas, it's mostly down to the X and the Incredible. After having read up on the specs of both rather extensively for the past few weeks (I'll have money to kill my AT&T contract and get on with Verizon sometime this month), the only thing I haven't been able to research very well is Sense versus the stripped-down version of Blur on the phones.

What are the pros and cons to use iPhone/Android phones to write scripts?
I'd like to buy a new mobile phone which I can utilize my time to do some scripting even when I'm not at my desktop computer.I heard that you can't save files to your iPhone unless you jail break it. This maybe a big problem if I want to create some new scripting file. Say I want to create a abc.java and there's no way for me to save it.
Is it the same case for Android too? Can I create local scripting files on Android phones? Since Android is a linux os... is it possible to install java sdk or other sdk (like flex?) on it?

I'm having a hard time deciding whether to go with Quartz2D or OpenGL for an iPad game. It will be 2D mostly, but effect-intense (simultaneous lighting effects for 10-30 objects, 10-20 simultaneous animations on the screen). So far, assuming i'm equally dumb in both technologies and have to learn them from the ground, i came to this list. (I've read several topics here, on SO, with names like "Quartz or OpenGL", but i'm still left with some questions)

Are there design guidelines to help decide if an application with multiple views should be designed with multiple activities or just one activity and control the back button itself.
I've tried both. My most complex applications using one activity per screen. However, now that I'm successfully written an app with just one activity and handling the back button myself, I don't see any compelling reason to use multiple activities. The one activity application is much simpler and more straightforward.
What advantages of multiple activities am I missing?

Is there a way to receive pictures from Chomp SMS? I had this set as my default text app (due to battery issues with the stock message app). I was sent a photo attached to a text message but it said that the mms did not down load. I couldn't figure out how to view it so I had to go into the stock message app and download the photo. Is there a way to view from ChompsSms instead of having to use the stock app?

I have a Nokia E71 (Symbian S60 v3) and am considering moving to either a Nokia N97 mini (Symbian S60 v5) or to Android, probably a Motorola Milestone/Droid.
What are the main differences between the two systems?
My priorities are a good battery life, a good push email system via imap idle, good PIM and sync to google calendar and maybe RememberTheMilk for tasks. I don't care about facebook, myspace, etc
I also like to organize my contacts into groups and I understand Android is better for this.
I know these discussions can degenerate into flames or some sort of "religion wars" (e.g. Windows vs Linux) but I'm only really interested in an honest comparison between the two systems. Much to my surprise, I could find very little on the web.
