HTC Hero :: At My Wits End With Non-Syncing Phone

I'm trying to upgrade the ROM on my phone but for the life of me I cannot get the PC to properly recognise it.I have a G2 Touch/HTC Hero running firmware version 1.5. I have carried out a factory reset on it and installed HTC Sync on my Windows Vista PC. Neither sync nor the upgrade process seem to be able to find the phone. I am however able to mount and unmount the SD card so there is definitely some connectivity. After I instaleld HTC sync it seemed to install drivers, including something called My HTC.When I connect the phone via the USB cable the HTC Sync icon appears in the top left ocrner, and I can drag down then click on it to start a sync, however it says it's unable to find HTC sync on my PC. I have uninstalled and re-installed HTC Sync on the PC to no avail. Snc on the PC shows itself to be 'disconnected'.

Basically I'm not a great techno lad, although I wish I was - I'm trying to arrange so that I can view my hotmail on my phone? I'm guessing it has something to do with the screen with the sort of blank white canvas with two tabs underneath it - a pencil & 3 horizontal lines?! When you press on it it brings up the screen 'Choose a mail provider' with two options of 'Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync & Other (POP3/IMAP). Both options have thwarted my attempts and to be honest I've no real idea what I am doing. I've synced the phone with my outlook CALENDAR at work, but not the emails - again no idea how to do that! I have set my phone gmail up fine, but a blindfolded crippled donkey could do that.

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what information is stored how between google and my phone, particulalry with respect to my (postal) addresses. I noticed that if I add an address to a contact it shows up fine on my phone, but not in my gmail account (even after waiting several hours and manually syncing the phone). However, if I add an address in my gmail account it shows up in both gmail and my contacts on my phone. Furthermore, when I use google maps on my phone and hit "directions" I can start entering the name of my contact and it will pop up in the list for me to choose if I had entered it via gmail or the phone. But if I instead hit the little bookmark icon next to the box for the address and hit the contacts options, it gives me a list of contacts that have addresses, but only contacts for whom those addresses had been entered on my phone.I should also note that all my contacts are stored as google contacts and not phone contacts. But it does seem as if addresses are somehow being stored as phone only when I add them via the phone, and that this is somewhat intentional since choosing contacts in google maps lists only those phone-entered contacts. Does anyone understand what's going on here?

When I sync my Sprint HTC Hero with Windows Vista (using HTC Sync version 2.0.8), I get the following error message: "The application com.android.providers.calendar (process com.htc.calendar) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." I also get this message occasionally when I'm not syncing. It doesn't seem to prevent my Hero from syncing new calendar events, but the error message is annoying. Anyone have an idea why I'm getting it and what I can do about it?

I love my new Android phone, and I am able to sync my songs/podcasts just fine using Easy Phone Tunes.
But I really liked that my iPod/iPhone would sync perfectly with my podcasts. If I played 15 minutes of the Dave Ramsey show on my iPhone, and then connected it to my computer, then I could continue the show on my computer. Additionally, after I connected my iPhone to the computer, I knew which podcasts to delete as it would show them as "played".
Is there a way to accomplish this with the Android phone? I am willing to give up on iTunes to make this happen. I am still using a Mac though.

Although my phone happily syncs contact groups I have added, it doesn't sync any of the default groups already available like family and coworkers. I've got around the problem by creating new groups and using those instead.

I synced all my gmail contacts to my phone but now when I go into gmail and check my contacts I have 1 that keeps showing up multiple times. Last time I looked he had over 50 entries. I deleted all but 1 and an hour later he's back another 25 times. I just put the 2.1 leak on my phone yesterday. Maybe that's the problem? Strange that it's only the 1 contact though.

I've been unable to actually sync my HERO to my computer I've got the HTC Sync software installed, and when I plug in the usb cable from the computer, to the phone. The only selection that comes up is to mount/unmount the SD Card. Not to sync.

I've had my HTC Hero for a couple of months and finally think I've got to grips with the majority of its features. One of the things I really liked when I originally set it up was the fact that my contacts in People would sync up with anyone it recognised as having a facebook account and therefore provided their profile picture and birthday info etc. However, a couple of weeks ago all these pictures suddenly disappeared and I've no idea why - I can still get onto facebook fine and my contacts all seem as they were except they're all pictureless and it's really starting to annoy me. Has anyone else experienced this or is there any setting I'm missing or something I've done wrong??
On a completely unrelated note (although I may well post this seperately), I've recenly downloaded Handcent SMS from the market as I'd read that this was a good alternative to the original messaging application, but I don't know how to set this as my default SMS app and to get rid of the original off my home screen.

I switch off Data Sync to save battery life, but today google mail will not sync, just keeps coming up with an error message, the others will sync. I've switched phone off and on, tried all day but cant get it to work. My market and Internet connectivity are also affected.

I have had the Hero since October 9 and never had a problem syncing my AOL email with my Hero. I have had it set to sync every 15 minutes and all worked well. About a week ago I started noticing issues with not getting my messages consistently and I started seeing a message below the emails saying "Get More Messages ____ messages total on server" (I don't recall seeing this message before). If the number of messages on the server is greater than what I have on my phone, I can manually sync and they will down load. Sometimes my messages will sync, but not consistently. As I type this I see that I was showing 9 messages and the server had 11 so I manually synced and two more messages downloaded to the phone but they were from over an hour ago. I have tried deleting the account and re-setting it up but that doesn't seem to correct the issue.
(BTW, my exchange messages still sync fine).

Is anyone having problems with Gmail syncing? I am using the Gmail app and started this afternoon I am not getting push email anymore. If I open the app and select Menu --> Refresh, the new messages pop in there. I did a soft reset and made sure Gmail was set to sync automatically.

Got the pre about a month ago and still have a few days to return it. I am seriously considering the hero having had a G1 and digging that before i was sucked into the iphone web (at&t bleeps). A couple questions that will either seal/break the deal: can you multitask on the hero as you can in the pre? i-e: have pandora going while you check email and answer a text? pre's web OS allows syncing with all three of my accounts: gmail, yahoo and hotmail. notifications for all three show up along with threaded conversations w/ various contacts. Can the hero also do this? or is yahoo/hotmail restricted as it they are on the iphone?

I've come to see the light and made the move last weekend away from windows mobile to the Hero...now I'm ready to embrace the cloud.I use Outlook at home which was straight forward to keep in sync on my windows mobile device.I'm keen to keep using Outlook so my goal is to sync my calendar, contacts and tasks with my google apps account which would then be accessible to the Hero.After countless hours research and testing I settled on the following setup:
- Home PC sync's outlook calendar to google calendar via googles calendar sync which is then linked to my Hero;
- Home PC sync's outlook contacts to my Hero via HTC Sync.
I haven't devised a method for tasks yet and as for notes I prefer to keep them in outlook only.This setup has its limitations as HTC Sync sets the contacts to type "phone" which means they don't get uploaded to google. Furthermore, I've discovered that Google in their wisdom automatically creates contacts on your behalf based on people you email and this feature to my knowledge cannot be deactivated...so I'm questioning the merrits of putting my contacts into google if I'm going to be bring down contacts I never created.I'm keen to hear from others who use outlook and no doubt have more andriod/google experience to get a feel for how they sync up.

I have HTC Sync on my PC and suddenly its not auto-syncing when I connect my phone.Opening it up on my PC and it just says Disconnected, similiarly through the Hero.Can't think its anything to do with anti-virus etc. as I synced a week ago with my works PC (Outlook calendar).

We have several users here in our office with the HTC Hero using the Google Apps Premiere system (myself included). I have subscribed to the US Holidays calendar on my Google Apps Calendar. It syncs to my phone with no problem. We have another user who is not so lucky. If I go to my calendar menu on the Hero I see where I can check/uncheck the US Holiday calendar. On the other user's phone, he does not have a US Holidays calendar that he can check/uncheck. I've seen similar posts that regard Sports calendars but have not found a solution for the US Holidays calendar.

I got my HTC Hero on three UK network a week ago and I love it!!! Anyway I have pretty much sorted it all out but have a slight problem when it comes to music. I currently have 5 gigs worth of songs I would like to transfer but only a 2 gig memory card. Using WMP11 I converted them to 64kbps and synced perfectly but then I realised that WMP had converted my mp3s to WMAs. For the first few minutes it would work fine on the hero but then it would suddenly stop and no more music would play. I also noticed that the temperature would usually jump from 27.1 to 44.2 while the music was playing. All in all my question is.... are there any free programs that will convert mp3s to lower bitrates which are still mp3 format and sync them to my HTC hero?

Is there a way to sync music and also PLAYLISTS onto the Hero? I know I can easily drag-n-drop files onto my Hero's SD card, and also use programs like MediaMonkey or Windows Media Player to sync music, but I can't seem to sync playlists. I have to manually create playlists on the Hero music app on the phone, and that is a pain.

Just got my greasy hands on a HTC Hero and loving it. I have used HTC to transfer my Outlook contacts to the phone as a one-off but even though I have "Sync Contacts" enabled (Home->Settings->Data Sync->Google->Contacts) on the phone I don't see these contact details when I log into Gmail on my Win PC and click contacts? Incidentally my calendar syncs from Hero to Gmail/calendar perfectly.

Noticed yesterday that I wasn't getting any new Gmail. After about 12 hours of no syncs I went in and played with settings, turning the sync on-and-off, and it finally synced again.
Well, now it has gone 13 hours without a sync according to the settings, and nothing I do seems to make it want to sync.
Anyone have any suggestions? I am running 2.1, and sync has worked since the upgrade for at least a few days. I have installed no new apps, I did delete one (Engadget reader, so nothing important)

There have been a lot of threads on this issue but I have 2 additional queries which I have not seen noted before. Firstly, why when I have set up my Gmail contacts on my computer into 8 groups do only 4 groups appear on my phone after synching? Secondly, is there anyway that the Google contacts can be rearranged so that the surname comes first - this can be done for phone contacts but does not appear possible for Google contacts?

Its my first ever Android phone, I own a HTC Hero. I have downloaded the latest HTC Sync and my phone has frimware version 1.5 and Kernal version 2.627-8dd6deee and build number 2.73.405.5 146733CL#61267
I managed to get everything set up how I want it but have a problem syncing the phones calendar with my MS Outlook 2007 calendar. Some of my seem to be missing on the Hero or in the wrong date to the Outlook calendar. The same happend with the contacts, but that fixed after snycing again. However, the calendar is still messed up!

I recently purchased an HTC Hero on Orange in the UK, and I'm loving it. Eagerly awaiting the firmware upgrade to smooth out the slight lag.
I was wondering if anyone had the following issue though. I've done a search and couldn't find anything quite the same.
I have a problem with selected contacts in People not syncing with facebook. The profile picture does not appear. Under Updates and events it either says "No updates or events" or "Updating". For the person's Albums tab it also says "No albums" under Facebook.
It is always the same contacts - I think just 4 out of about 30. It's been the same for a few days now. Obviously these are people I know have profile pictures and photo albums!
I have tried:
Turning the phone off and on.
Disconnecting and reconnecting to facebook in the settings.
De-linking and then re-linking the contact to their facebook profile.
Deleting and then re-adding the contact and then linking the new contact entry with the facebook profile.
