HTC Eris :: Successful Rooting With 2.1v3 / Until I Turn Phone Off
May 8, 2010
Twice now, I've successfully used AR recovery routine to install the 2.1v3 (rooted) on my Eris, (previously running the original "v1" root).Install was a breeze--tho' I had to "push" the recovery .img and the flash routine by dragging them onto the SD/into nested "system" and "bin" folders manually while mounted to my Mac, as the first command prompt instructions generated error messages.the remainder of the command prompt instructions then executed successfully on my girlfriend's Windows machine, where I could install the SDK.I restored my Apps got everything set up, widget-ed, etc.All well until I turned my phone off when going to the theatre on powering back on: got to lock screen, but when I unlocked I had a black screen with an "unexpectedly stopped. Force close and try again" message for com.htc.launcher.When I click the Force Close button, I immediately get another dialogue saying com.htc.mms has stopped and then the first, com.htc.launcher dialogue pops up over and over, with the background behind never therefore progressing beyond the black screen with silver/gray "htc" logo.

Everytime I turn the screen on and unlock I get this message on my home screen with the clock/wx widget. It says, "Set new clock successful!" It dissolves after a couple seconds but it still annoys me. It only happens on the screen with that widget and not with other home screen pages. It's the Beautiful Widgets Small Home and I'm using Launcher Pro. Here's the screen shot: clockmsg.jpg

I do not believe I have an issue with the physical port, because the phone automatically charges when connected to the PC. However, instead of asking me what to do when the USB is connected to the PC, the phone automatically turns on the Car Mode?I cannot get the PC to recognize the phone for the life of me, so that means I am stuck on the stock rooted rom until I can easily gain access to the SD card via the USB cable. Anyone heard of this issue yet? Can I reinstall HTC sync without disrupting root?

I'm attempting to use JmDNS (zeroconf / Bonjour) to resolve a local network hosts IP address. JmDNS succeeds on the simulator, but fails on the phone. The phone is an HTC Magic (from the Google I/O conference). Both are running Android 1.5

My phone isn't rooted yet but I want to do it. I upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 via the system upgrade that Verizon ousted out to all Eris users a few weeks ago. Here are my questions:
Is OTA = over the air?
Is my 2.1 rom the one that is referred to as 2.1 OTA?
Is there a well documented procedure out there for rooting my version 2.1 rom phone?

I have a stock 2.1 Eris. As a phone, it is a flaming turd. Phone-dial lag can be so bad the phone can be making a call minutes after I've hit the button to call. Once a week it is so screwed up that the phone thinks it is in a conference call with the same number at the same time. Because after a minute or two of no call being initiated, silly me, I dial again. Eventually both calls take place. I wind up talking to my wife while I'm also leaving some bogus voice mail at her same number. As it stands, this phone is literally an embarrassment. All of these problems started immediately after the 2.1 OTA update. Yes, I've done a factory reset. I've cleared my call log. Blah blah blah. I just want a phone that can dial without getting all "Special Olympics" on me. Simple question: Will rooting fix this kind of problem?

Has or will anyone describe the process in detail for the mac users out there. I'm on a standard Eris and would like to move to the unofficial ROOTED 2.1 ROM but I don't own a PC and am hesitant about doing it without some guidance.

Any ideas here? My phone has been acting up lately so I did a factory reset. So far so good with the exception of my 3G. It won't turn on. put the mobile widget back on and it stays in the "on" position, but no mobile network. Went into settings/wireless&networks, scrolled down to mobile network. It says turning on..., but it's not doing anything and won't let me check or unchecked the box. When I touch the screen it just highlights it. I'm really starting to hate this phone.

I had turned off the Eris and when I turned it back on, I get a little icon with a question mark and in Notifications it says "The SD card is damaged. You may have to reformat." The first time I did reformat (after, as I thought, saving everything I wanted to my PC - turns out I didn't save photos ). This time, I'm wondering if it's really damaged or not. Anyone have experience with this? It seems kind of odd.

I was looking at the phone info, found by dialing *#*#4636#*#* one button in this is "Turn off radio".I'm interested to know if this could be used to work around the current inability to do airplane mode and enable wifi at the same time on the Eris. Could you use this option to turn off the radio, disable mobile network, and then enable wifi?Has anyone seen if this works, and if turning the radio on and off is as easy as finding this button? I'm a bit afraid to try it myself right now.

From day one, everyone in my family has noticed that when I start up my phone it automatically sends everyone covered by my family plan (4 other phones) a blank text message. I've looked for a button to uncheck this feature, but none exists (to my knowledge). Last night I mentioned it to my local service rep and they're at a loss. They've heard it happening, even amongst themselves, but don't have a solution.
Does anyone have any experience with this and have you been able to turn it off?

I know I'm comparing phones that are different, but the Blackberry has the option to turn off the phone, and 'wake up' right before the alarm goes off. This helps save battery life and keep from waking you up in case you get an email or text in the middle of the night. Is there any way the Eris has something comparable? I know there is an airplane mode - what is this? Any chance that's what I'm looking for?

Is there any way to get the stock Android Messaging app on the Eris? I hate the HTC messaging app; it's so slow and leggy. I also hate Handcent and Chomp. Is there any way I could get the stock Android SMS app? Or does this require rooting or what?

So I use the task killer...and at the moment say when I kill tasks it'll tell me there is about 200M avaliable memory free...if I use the phone for a day it'll maybe go down to 150M even if I am still killing apps and there is nothing in 'running services'. If i turn off the phone and turn it back on it goes up to 250M. What is running that I can't stop myself to make it go down from the 250M but that I can just eliminate by turning off the phone?

I tried wireless Tethering via Bluetooth with the PDANet App and it was an utter failure...i'd get a connection but it was up and down every 5-10 minutes...I can get a solid connection when tethering over USB with PDAnet...But that sucks as it only seems to work with the Charging cable that came with the Eris and not the HUNDREDS of other usb cables i have laying around....
So everyone said...'ROOT!' Its easy to wirelessly Tether when you 'Root!'
you can even use your phone as a hotspot...
So i thought 'Cool, i'd really like to be able to use it as a hotspot!'
I used this rooting system Universal 1 Click Eris App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY
Noted i now have a new app called 'SuperUser Permission'
Downloaded 'Wireless Tether' from the App store...Set all Permissions on the phone
my Netbook detects NOTHING!
WTF am i doing wrong? It still works under pdanet...ALL i care about is using my phone as a Wireless/wifi hotspot, thats it!
