HTC EVO 4G :: Disable Automatic Backlight Dimming While Charging
Jun 11, 2010
I'm running into an issue, that I'm sure many of you have ran into at some point and found a way around. When I have my Phone Plugged into the Charger (For example when in my car) after a set amount of time (I think it's around 30 seconds) my screen will Dim to only about 25% brightness(But never shut off completely). As you can imagine, this is horribly inconvenient when I'm running Google maps or sprint navigation. How can I make it, so that when I'm charging the phone, the screen just always stays on and does not dim at all? And then when I'm on battery the screen resumes the normal behavior of shutting off after 30 seconds. I've tried setting the "Stay Awake" option under "Applications > Development" to on, I've also tried setting the "Automatic Brightness" option under "Sound & Display > Brightness" to off. Neither of these worked.

I'm getting a lot of requests by users of my flashlight application, that they want me to disable the HTC Hero's automatic dimming feature that works off the light sensor. How do you disable it through code? Or, isn't there a way?

My backlight comes on when charging, even if I lock the phone (to a blank screen) and I receive a text or message - a dim backlight comes on.

I have had my Captivate for a couple of weeks now and love it except for one major issue. I keep dropping calls -- The back light comes on randomly and then my chin hits the end call button or other keys and I lose the call. I have had no success figuring out how to disable the backscreen from coming on during a call or if there is another solution that would work. I do not want to return the phone. Can anyone think of a solution?

I frequently get unsolicited notifications that one or more apps have been updated. Is there a way to disable automatic app updates? I like to check for myself to see if I really want a specific app update. Examples: some apps want to enable new permissions that I don't necessarily want; some irreversibly change or even do away with the app - e.g., Currents.
Phone is a new Nexus 5. (Great phone, by the way)

I have recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S, and Google Maps came installed on the phone. Now if I enter Android Market, then Google Maps is automatically updated, if there is an update. I have checked it under My apps, but there is no Automatic update checkbox as for other programs I downloaded from the market. Is there a way to disable this automatic update for Google Maps? I would be great, if I could choose when it should be updated, because its not funny, when my 3G limit is exceeded with Google Maps updates.

As I understand by default HttpClient automatically handles Redirect replies from server (follows the redirect link included in the answer from a server). I wonder if and how is it possible to disable this behaviour and handle redirects manually, meaning that I can get redirect link from the reply, modify it and issue a new http request. In a "desktop" version of HttpClient/HttpMethod one can do it as follows:
HttpMethod method = new GetMethod(requestUrl); method.setFollowRedirects(false);
How can I do the same under Android?

Just got my new Vibrant delivered yesterday so now the questions start.
1. Is there a way to disable the automatic screen locking and allow me to just press the on/off switch to lock? There are many cases where I don't want the screen to lock automatically - eg. listening to music. But then when I put the phone in my pocket, case, whatever, I'd like to press a button to lock it.

Wondering if there is a way to disable the automatic music player every time I insert my ear-buds.
I usually start google listen, but It seems If I don't...the music player starts up.
This also occurred when I tried to watch a video.
I would prefer to start the music player manually, if I want to listen to music.

I am a Droid user at the moment, but am considering moving to the EVO next month, and I have a question regarding the LED's on the phone. My wife has to have complete darkness in the room at night and even a charging light bothers her she says (wtf, I just close my eyes and I cant see it, but whatever).
Anyway, on the Droid there is a program called LEDs hack that allows us to turn off all the notification and soft-button LED's when charging, so I am wondering if anything similar is available for the EVO yet. Also, can the charging light itself be disabled? It could not on the droid, but the home dock covered that one completely, so no big deal.

I've tried searching, but apparently don't know the right search criteria to find what I'm looking for.
I've seen it posted how to disable the Verizon pop up when you just want to charge from your USB, and I did it initially, but then I did a factory re-set and it's popping back up.
Does anyone have the directions for removing that again?

Is there a way to stop the Droid X from charging when it's connected via USB? Here's the situation. I take a train to commute to work, it's about a 90 minute ride, and there's no AC power. I like to use my laptop during the commute to get some work done, and with my new droid I bought an app that tethers the internet connection, but only over USB.
Problem is, when it's connected over USB, the laptop battery charges the phone, and the laptop dies after about 45-60 minutes. Without the phone connected, I can use it for my whole commute. So I really need to be able to disable the charging while still maintaining the data connection from the phone to the laptop.

I hate charging my battery before it drains off. So if I wanted to stream music on the phone at work, do you think there is an app that'll disable battery charging if I have the phone plugged into power plug? basically draw juice from wall and disable battery from use or charge.

is there a way to disable this charging notification feature? it wasn't a big deal in the beginning, but since i need to charge my phone constantly to last the entire day, it has become an issue. I know I can turn my notification off or change it to vibration but then I'll miss all my alerts and reminders from other apps. any apps out there can simply turn this feature off?

I recently made the switch from a BlackBerry Curve to the HTC Incredible. One of the "features" of my Curve that I'm having trouble duplicating on the Incredible is this: I was able to set a timeout to lock the phone and a separate timeout to blacken the screen. That is, if the screen went black after 30 seconds of inactivity, the screen wouldn't necessarily lock until 30 minutes of inactivity. I have increased the screen timeout on my Incredible, but the screen doesn't dim at all. I tried installing the No Lock application, but now I can't find a way to manually lock the phone if necessary.

Is there a way to separate the dimming vs. sleeping timeout? It appears that if I set the screen timeout to any value, it dims first, then sleeps. I have the "never sleep when charging" setting checked, and what it does when charging is the screen dims, but the moment does not sleep. Is there a way to prevent the dimming while charging?

I've read all the posts I could find. I just want the phone to never dim. The option to have it shut off at 2 minutes is perfect. I just hate the dimming that happens before it shuts off. I have tried screebl but is completely disables screen off timer. I just want it to stop dimming and just shut the screen off according to the display timeout. It dims reguardless of manual or automatic brightness. I don't want to disable the screen off timer either. IF I leave the phone on at the table and walk away, I do want it to turn off in 2 minutes.
What can I do to just keep the freaking phone from dimming yet still shut off with the timer?

I have recently installed cyanogen on my desire and have found the mod to be an absolute joy to use. The one irritation however has been the automatic screen dimming. Every 6 or 7 seconds or so the screen dims itself. This can become very annoying when reading long messages or any other text. Surely there must be a simple solution to turn off this automatic dimming setting?

My Eris has been working fine with the screen timeout. It is set to go off at 1 minute. But since last night, it's only dimming the screen now. It will not turn off unless I press the end call button. It hasn't been doing that, so I'm not sure what's going on.

How in the world do you prevent the screen from auto-dimming? And yes, I do have that setting unchecked. When I have my phone plugged in and it's using Nightwatch as a deskclock, after a bit that screen dims. Help me stop it!
P.S. I did search the forum and I don't want to load Screebl
