HTC EVO 4G : Best Place To Buy Phone Off Contract?

So, I've heard too many mixed things in like 50 different threads, and can't really make sense of all of them, so I thought I'd just make a new thread.
What is the best place to buy Evo off contract? Certain places like Wirefly don't sell off contract, others like Amazon apparently don't either. Places like Best buy and radio shack seem to have a higher off contract price ($549). Sprint's online store seems to be the most obvious choice, but then we get stuck with Tax (which for california is nearly 50$ dollars)
So, has anyone done their research and figured out what place will be best, and why?

Do most of the Android developers on this list use their own phone for testing? Or there are ways to obtain Android phones that are unlocked and require no contract? Any advice on that?

So for clarification if I'm not satisfied with Sprint can I return my Evo and cancel my contract without any penalties since it's been less than 30 days? Or will I still have to pay the ETF?

I was wondering if there was a way to set my phone or google contact photo as the default photo for contacts. I went through and changed them individually, but they keep on reverting to the facebook photos.

Ive recently bought a HTC Desire on orange contract and the phone appears to be debranded and unlocked. There is no evidence of orange applications in the menu and my other vodafone sim works with it too! Is there anyway to work out whether this has the generic HTC unbranded rom or not? And does that mean i will get the Froyo update when HTC release it?

I should be able to get an Evo tomorrow. Is Wirefly still the best place? Their price has gone up from the launch price of $170 to $190, but it appears you can still get $50 Bing cash back. And I think there's a coupon code for a free bluetooth headset.
I actually tried to order the Evo on the launch date from Wirefly, but was denied because my upgrade date wasn't ready. I think I'll give them a call and see if they can honor the launch price of $170 for me.

What's the best place to download movies to your phone? Do any of you guys download them directly to your phones? What format do they have to be in on the computer to put on your phone? I know my iphone was mpeg4. Keeping my kids busy on road trips, plane trips and restaurants is of paramount importance. I'd like to find a place to download some kids movies. Preferably for cheaper than $20. yuck. But I am not into stealing them so don't bother with torrent sites. The people that made them deserve to get paid for their craft.

I'm new to the world of Androids. I have the the HTC Evo 4G and wanted to know if there is a place where I can save sensitive information on my phone? I converted from the BB Bold 9700 on ATT, that phone had a password keeper. Evo does not seem to have a similar application.

I'm going from a Blackberry to an EVO tomorrow. One of the things I would like to do is get several movies loaded up on the EVO. I just have no idea how. Is there any kind of online place that sells movie downloads formatted for the EVO? If not what is my best bet to get some movies? Also, how much space does a typical 2hr movie take up on a micro sdhc card?

I'm getting ready to put a new rom and its suggesting to put RA recovery 1.6.2. currently i have 1.5.2 and i know how to push it to the phone. My question do I delete the RA 1.5.2 on my phone then push or do I just push 1.6.2 and is that it? Is there more steps after placing a new Recovery Image.

Will the smart phone ever take the place of the home computer as we know it ie desktop/laptop.
With most service providers now doing unlimited internet and our phones capable of anything ie email, text, facebook, twitter, sell and buy stuff on ebay, watching movies, TV the list goes on and on. Why do we need our home computers ?
I believe the home computer is on its way out, yes we will need the computer in industry, banks, stock control etc ie for business use but for the home market its doomed.

How do i save apps from the market place to my sd card and not the phone.
i have downloaded quite a few apps to play with and get a feel for what each does etc, but not ive had issues where i need to free up space.
i have found that my apps go to the phone by default and not sd card.
just wondered where i change this, if its possible, and how i can move any that have already been saved to the phone?

I just got back from a weekend in Julian and I was very happy with the quality of the pictures. Best "point and shoot" I have ever owned (not trying to compare it to a "real" camera). Is there a gallery here to post pictures? Or should we start a thread with links to Flickr or Picasa, et al, with Droid-taken pics?

My credit history is not good at all. I don't want to be let down on June 4th. I pre ordered from the Shack ....but no credit history check was run.Will they allow me to fill out the paper work right now? ...I guess I can call....lol but what did you guys do? has anybody filled out the paper work yet?

I just got off the phone with 3 separate Best Buy stores about how much the EVO will cost off contract because I wanted to come in and pre order. All of them told me $600!.I guess that $450 was a pipe dream... Did sound too good to be true. Especially when the Incredible is $529 off contract

I am creating an application that checks the installation of a package and then launches the market-place with its id.
When I try to launch market place with id of an application say com.mybrowser.android by throwing an intent android.intent.action.VIEW with url: market://details?id=com.mybrowser.android, the market place application does launches but crashes after launch.
Note: the application com.mybrowser.android doesn't exists in the market-place.
MyApplication is my application.

However, when I try to launch the market place for a package that exists in the market place say com.opera.mini.android, everything works. Log for this case:

Is it possible to purchase the HTC EVO directly and outside of the contract? Right now I'm on Sprint's cheapest plan, and I don't want to upgrade to Sprint's data plan which would cost me $50 more per month. I know that a direct purchase would be more money, but assuming I have the phone for two years, it can't be $1,200 more ($50*24). I'm only going to use the web features at home or in the office, where I have WiFi anyway. If I REALLY need to use the data service here or there, it still won't cost me $50 more paying per KB. When at home or in the office, I could also use Google Voice to make all of my phone calls over WiFi if I go over my 300 minutes (which I won't). Will Sprint allow me to activate an unlocked phone on their network? Are there glaring gaps in this plan?

Technically, they didn't hold their end of the contract. I bet we could use this as a way out of our contract if it came down to it. Does anyone know the rules about that? And if it is, anyone getting the EVO 4g with Sprint? That would prolly be where I went.
