HTC EVO 4G :: How Much EVO Will Cost Off Contract?
May 13, 2010
I just got off the phone with 3 separate Best Buy stores about how much the EVO will cost off contract because I wanted to come in and pre order. All of them told me $600!.I guess that $450 was a pipe dream... Did sound too good to be true. Especially when the Incredible is $529 off contract

If i place the Widet that covers up the whole screen called Stocks by Yahoo. Then click it to open it I can add a stock or index. However, right under that text it says *This service may result in additional charges from your wireless provider. It's Yahoo Finance Stocks which comes with the phone. Anyone know if it cost extra money to use? Also if I go into settings/wireless controls/mobile network settings/ data roaming (connect to data services when roaming) and check that does it cost extra money to use 3G when the phone is roaming? Do you guys have "enable always-on mobile" (uses more power on some mobile networks) checked?

Has anyone got any idea why the cost of Android apps seems to be waaay more than the cost of iphone ones?A work colleague was saying that he downloaded Angry Birds (which I beleive is on its way to us) from the Apps store for 59p? I can't see it being 59p when it comes to Android?Yet all the apps in market seem to be more expensive than that, well the odd ones that are listed in sterling currency and not dollars.

Can "tethering" on the EVO realistically replace a home internet connection on a desktop computer? I have 2 computers at home that rely on AT&T DSL for the internet (which is really slow). If I get an EVO, can I easily drop my DSL and instead use the EVO "tethering" feature? Is it complicated to use? That is, I sometimes just want to quickly check a website, and if it's hard to set up every time I want to use the internet on my desktop, it won't be worth it. Does it cost extra to "tether" the EVO to a home desktop computer?

I'm using the geocoder in the android map api, this work relatively good, my problem though is that i want to be able to get a number of addresses near a geopoint ! I thought about calculating different geopoint near the a center geopoint, but what about the cost of calling the reverse geocoder multiple times etc.

I have been given the tasks of speccing a mobile application, which will need to run on approx. 1000 devices. These devices already exist, and consist of iPhones, BlackBerrys, Androids, Windows Mobile and Netbooks. The application will have simple reporting capability, and a collection of forms. Anyway, the obvious solution would be to develop some browser based solution, although given the occasionally connected nature of the devices, there's a potential for data to get lost / not saved.
So instead of creating a complex application for each platform, I was thinking we could build what is effectively a form generator, with basic offline storage capability (text files), designed to run on each device, and have the device generate a form, based on for example an XML file that it could request from a server somewhere, resulting in minimal specialist development costs, and the ability to run most of the logic from the server end, with the devices being dumb clients that render forms and upload the data when there is an available connection. Anyway, my question summarised is, how have you made the decision on supporting multiple devices for your application. Is this always an unavoidable problem, and you just have to make the call to support 1 or 2, or pay for developers to write code for each platform, or alternatively supply pre-installed devices to the company?

Is it possible to purchase the HTC EVO directly and outside of the contract? Right now I'm on Sprint's cheapest plan, and I don't want to upgrade to Sprint's data plan which would cost me $50 more per month. I know that a direct purchase would be more money, but assuming I have the phone for two years, it can't be $1,200 more ($50*24). I'm only going to use the web features at home or in the office, where I have WiFi anyway. If I REALLY need to use the data service here or there, it still won't cost me $50 more paying per KB. When at home or in the office, I could also use Google Voice to make all of my phone calls over WiFi if I go over my 300 minutes (which I won't). Will Sprint allow me to activate an unlocked phone on their network? Are there glaring gaps in this plan?

Technically, they didn't hold their end of the contract. I bet we could use this as a way out of our contract if it came down to it. Does anyone know the rules about that? And if it is, anyone getting the EVO 4g with Sprint? That would prolly be where I went.

Since lots of people here are on Orange it seems an appropriate place to ask. Do Orange charge separately for MMS even if you are on an unlimited texts contract? I get the impression they do, which is really very irritating. I don't suppose there's any way around it by ringing up and negotiating?

So I have one of the evos already and I called a sprint store to ask about activating it and what not. what I figured is since I did not get the phone subsidized from sprint then I should be able to activate it without being stuck in a 2 year contract. Well the guy I talked to told me otherwise. Does that seem right? Why should I be forced in to contract if I did not get the phone through them.

I'm currently waiting for the Desire to come out on O2, but am still not sure whether this is the best thing to do, or whether I should just get it SIM free and get an O2 Simplicity SIM (I want O2 because of the data allowance and because I know the coverage is good here, unlike other networks). My issues are, if I get it on O2 will it be ruined by them, covered in O2 stuff inside and out. But, if I get it SIM free, will it be difficult to set up when I put the SIM in, for messaging/internet access/whatever. I'm not that techie minded so if it's complicated to set all this up on a SIM free phone I might struggle.

Just in case someone else has the same dilema i had by buying thier EVO online for full price so they dindt have to get the 2 year contract. but then realizing that sprint requires a new 2 year contract with every new line you activete regardles of you bought the phone outright or not. heres how how to get around it.
1 Buy EVO 4G wherever.
2 Activated old phone with a new number on the basic Month to month 200 plan (had to be done at the Sprint store they wold not let me activate over the phone with this plan)
3 go home and upgrade plan online to 99.00 unlimited everything
4 Swap old phone with EVO under activate new phone online
5 Port your phone number from whereever you have it to Sprint replacing the new phone you just got when you avtivated the line
Thats it, it quite a few steps but atleast you wont have to worry about getting locked in to a new 2 year contract.

So, I've heard too many mixed things in like 50 different threads, and can't really make sense of all of them, so I thought I'd just make a new thread.
What is the best place to buy Evo off contract? Certain places like Wirefly don't sell off contract, others like Amazon apparently don't either. Places like Best buy and radio shack seem to have a higher off contract price ($549). Sprint's online store seems to be the most obvious choice, but then we get stuck with Tax (which for california is nearly 50$ dollars)
So, has anyone done their research and figured out what place will be best, and why?

Alright so I have the alias 2 currently and have about a year left on my 2 Year Contract. What is the deal with the contracts? I hear from some people that I could get the phone at the 2 year price and it would then extend my contract another 2 years from that date. Or is the 2 year contract with the phone, where I would NEED to cancel the contract in order to get the 2 year pricing on the droid incredible?

I am closing an AT&T family plan and changing it back to one line. AT&T obviously wants to charge me for early cancellation unless I can find someone to transfer the second line to. They said it can be ANYONE. The perk for you is that you would NEVER have to have a contract. They will send me a new sim card, which in turn I would send to you. You would be responsible for getting your own phone. Once you have that, all you need to do is call AT&T and tell them what service you want. Again, best part is no contract. It's called TOBR (Transfer of Billing Responsibility.)
