HTC Incredible :: Wifi Hotspot - Does This Require Root
May 31, 2010Has anyone gotten the Incredible to act as a wifi hotspot? Does this require root?

View 9 RepliesI want to do is set up my HTC Incredible (currently running official HTC Sense/Froyo) as a wifi hotspot (not paying verizon $20 for 2GB/month, and not usb tethering.. need wifi).
Unfortunately, even though stock Froyo 2.2 supports free wifi hotspot, the official (un-rooted) froyo for the incredible forces you to pay $20/month to verizon to use as a wifi hotspot.
I'm assuming this is correct, but I just wanted to make sure: If I root my phone, then I will be able to install a rom and use it's built-in free wifi hotspot capabilities using my data connection, right?
Also, is there a rom that has HTC Sense, as well as free wifi hotspot capability? I would like to keep using HTC Sense over "stock" Froyo, and still be able to use free wifi hotspot capability if possible.
Someone from WMWifiRouter had mentioned a couple months ago they were working on a product for Android but I haven't heard anymore. I was hoping they'd drop their product when paid apps went live. Any news? Any other Wifi tethering out there that doesn't require me to root my phone?
View 17 Replies View RelatedI"ve heard that you can root the Droid 2 to enable to use it as a WiFi hot spot. What steps I have to take in order to do this? I'm somewhat computer savvy, have written software in Visual Basic, C++ and a few other languages.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe best WiFi/BT tether/hotspot app out there has just added support for the EVO 4G about half an hour ago. Of course, root is required but it's just one click away with unrevoked. Forget Sprint's $30 a month tether - this one is free and supported by the community. This is why I love Android. All info here:
Rooted EVO 4G Users Can Now Enjoy Unlimited Free WiFi/Bluetooth Tether (Hotspot) As Android-wifi-tether App Adds Support For EVO
I just rooted my Xperia Z and still using the default ROM however my wifi and wifi hotspot will now not turn on.

Yes I did a "root" search on the market, and I am so ignorant I don't know what the apps are for or capable of.I already know root explorer is a must, other than that I have nothing.

View 8 Replies View RelatedHow much do you think Verizon will charge for the mobile hotspot feature when it comes to the incredible via froyo? Considering the pre has the service for free.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently rooted my Incredible and installed Cyanogen 6.00 RC3. I liked some things about it but missed some of the stock HTC widgets and apps. The Cyanogen rom had wifi hot spot, and it worked great. I could connect more than one computer to it, as it acted like a Hotspot.
Today i reflashed to Virtuous 2.7 Rom, which is alot like the stock 2.2. I got back the things I missed in Cyanogen but no wifi hotspot. Instead, there is "Wireless Tethering" which doesn't seem to work. The latest version is installed, version 2.0.5-pre9. Neither of my computers can "see" the connection.
Is there any way I can get the wifi hot spot app that was in Cyanogen and install it on my phone with the Virtuous 2.7 Rom? wireless tethering really doesn't do what I want it to.
With 2 million ipads sold, I don't understand VZW's rationale for not offering some kind of wifi hotspot app that you'd pay $30/month for on a month by month basis. It seems like it would be such an easy money maker.
View 18 Replies View RelatedSo I decided to actually try out Barnacle today, as I've had it installed for a couple days now. Set my options, started it, and connected with an older Acer laptop that a co-worker had at the office. Here are the speeds I got from the local San Diego, CA speedtest.net server...
5.13Mb down
1.37Mb up
Wow...that's phenominal for a mobile device!
I decided to try the WiFi hotspot available through 2.2. GREAT! Actually worked quite a bit better than I thought it would. Only trouble is, ... now I'm back at home, it fails to connect to the home network.
+ Restarting phone
+ Re-entering password
+ Forgetting network + refinding
WiFi sees the network, says "Connecting", comes up "Failed to connect", "Scanning" and loops on that sequence. I know the router's working because this laptop is using it right now
I need to find a copy control app that doesn't require root.
View 2 Replies View Relatedcreating an app which requires root access.Purpose of this app
1) Able to access a file in root/data/data/*APP XYZ*/*THIS FILE*
2) Generate a random string of number
3) Replace the specific string in *THIS FILE* with the randomly generated number
4) Saves *This File*
Right now I can do it manually but it is rather tedious. Was thinking if it would be possible to create an app to do this automatically with one click.

It seems as though none of the Apps that require root are working properly.

View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know if we can log into the sprint wifi hotspot like a normal router?
I am hoping to forward some ports and hopefully open up my NAT.
I could not find anything, I know that the sprint overdrive has router settings like this.
Just thought I'd let everyone know, it DEFINITELY is possible. Before having an EVO I asked around all over and not many people would commit to saying it worked. I'm just here to say it works GREAT.
just got pinged at 95 ms and it works fine. Halo 3, Warcraft 3... they all work fantastic. Pretty much no different than my previous "high speed" cable connection.
I'm paying the $30 for the mobile hot spot and I have to say it's 100% worth it. I still only have 3g, no 4g yet... can only imagine how nice it will be then.
I just installed the leaked OTA, rooted my phone, and installed wireless tether, but now my phone will no longer switch out of 3g and into Wifi mode?
View 4 Replies View RelatedQuick background, I am still on a $30/month SERO plan with my Touch Pro 2 and waiting to get a $10/24 month discount but Sprint has put a halt to all discounts for the time being, so I'm going to try when the iPhone 4 comes out and when Verizon gets their Droid X. I was going to sell my EVO but it seems I might as well keep it since I'm going to eventually use it.
So in the meantime, I'm going to hold onto the TP2/SERO and use the EVO when I am within a WiFi network. Thing is sometimes I want to bring the EVO out, so I thought maybe I could open up a WiFi hotspot with HTC's Wifi-Router software and connect to it with the EVO. But the EVO isn't recognizing the WiFi hotspot. My laptop can recognize it though. I tried to add the WiFi network but it'll say "Not in range, remembered".
OK all you developers there is not a GOOD wifi hot-spot locater out there! I want to be able to put in my zip code or have it pull from my gps where I am and then tell me where the nearest wifi spots are. I used to have an awesome app on my Blackberry. It was user driven--as in we could add hot-spots and rate them. Jii Wire is trying. Their Iphone app works awesome . . their Android app . . well it stinks! Given it is a new app and hopefully they will continue to make it better but seems rather slow in coming. Google places has a wifi finder but unfortunately there are too many morons that don't get how important is to have their business listing be correct--if they have claimed it you can't even add it for them.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just purchased a 32gig Ipad Wifi Only and wondered if it would be possible to link this to a HTC desire (running Froyo) when I'm on the move? View 4 Replies View RelatedI was excited to use the new phone specifically for the wifi hotspot. I could not believe when it did not work right away that I needed to tack an extra 30 a month in order for sprint to activate the thing.
So I am wondering if there is a better way to use the phone as a wifi hotspot without haveing to eat the service charge. I seen something about a way that involved root access which I could probably do but I was hoping there was a better way or maybe going to be a better way with android 2.2?
Is the Wifi Hotspot for the Droid X going to be required? Or is it optional?
