HTC Desire :: Updates Come Thick And Fast With Loads Of Cool New Features?
Mar 30, 2010
I'm new to this whole Android game so you'll have to excuse my n00bness.
As I understand it, the Nexus One gets any Android updates quickly because they come straight from Google and the Nexus is a vanilla install.
The Desire uses Sense though so we would have to wait for updates on that to be made compatible by HTC
Am I right so far?
So I guess my real question is how much of an issue is this? Do updates come thick and fast for Android with loads of cool new features, or is it once in a blue moon you may get something new? Do HTC generally keep Sense up to date with the latest release?

Ok so I accidentally imported my sim card contacts into my phone twice. Now while I have hidden the sim card contacts so everything looks ok on the people screen, if i go into a contact and look at what it is linked to there is 3 versions of the contact all on the phone and all just with the number. Is there an easy way to sort this out? or should I just delete all my phone contacts and import from sim again?

I have seen a few firmware versions of FROYO banded around for the Desire on this Forum. Having updated my O2 Desire yesterday and playing around with it, I was curious how the O2 firmware compares with the rest. My software details are as follows: Android version 2.2. Baseband version 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 Kernel version 2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1 Build number 2.14.207.1 CL233777 release-keys Software number 2.14.207.1 Browser version Webkit 3.1. I may be optimistic/delusional but I have discovered some features in the O2 Froyo release from yesterday that were showcased the other day at the HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z launch event as being part of the all new HTC Sense.

I am very new to android, literally got my Desire HD yesterday. One thing I noticed, in the Google Android keynote speech this year, they seem to demonstrate a very different looking android market website. Control over buying apps and automatically having your phone install them remotely, etc. Is that something that coming soon?

I am on my second handset and I am having so many problems with the phones I'm thinking of just giving up and trying to switch to a Samsung Galaxy S. I'm on the wretched Orange network and my phone has these problems:
- Non-working FM radio - it is static on every setting, although sometimes Radio 2 works(!) regardless of what headphones are plugged in.
- Alarm not working - It just doesn't go off if left overnight, even when turned on and with 2 alarms set.
- No internet via 3G - It gives no traffic, completely dead regardless of signal strength. It works via GSM and HSDPA.
- Randomly dropping calls.
- Randomly not able to send texts.
- People ring me and it goes randomly straight to answerphone.
- Erratic bluetooth, sometimes it works ok, other times it randomly disconnects from headset or car system.
It seems like almost every problem present on this forum, my phone has at once and it's driving me mad. Are these problems likely to be due to the horrible old ROM version that Orange runs (1.15.61.10)? They won't update it because it is too much work to stuff all of their crapware onto newer versions (solely designed to make you pay for things that are already available free, e.g. maps, ringtones etc). I dread to think how long it will be for Froyo on Orange. I am scared of updating the firmware incase it doesn't fix my problems and then I may not be able to get a replacement. Has anyone else used a replacement firmware to get rid of any of the above problems, or should I bite the bullet and go for a Samsung (I know it is cheaper built and doesn't have sense but at least it works right?). Does anyone know if the new "Black" handset on Orange runs the same firmware or has any updates? Also, that awesome Clock feature on Desire, with Alarm, Stopwatch, Timer, etc. Is that Android or Desire cos I'd hate to lose it by changing from HTC.

I updated Google Maps to 4.6 yesterday. And I am unable to see one of the main features of the new version i.e. to filter results by open times and neighbourhood etc. When I click on the places icon in my maps, it just shows me the two search filters that I had before - 'Distance' and 'Rating'. Am I the only one who is having this problem? I am on T-Mobile in UK.

Having just moved to an Android 2.1u1 HTC Desire from an Android 1.5 HTC Hero, I've noticed that there a weird behaviour from TabWidget in that it shows a thick white line under the tabs instead of what I think it should do. Difficult to explain so here are two URLs: http://android.esstec.co.uk/images/how_it_should_be.png http://android.esstec.co.uk/images/what_it_is.png Initially the tabwidget looks like the first picture but when you do anything with it (change tabs for example), it looks like the second. These screenshots are from the Google provided API demos so I don't think it's my code, but I wanted to paste here before filing a bug. Anyone got any ideas?

I just got my Desire last week, upgrade on Vodafone from a Samsung Omnia, and this one is by far THE best one ever. PRO: with 1Ghz cpu it runs like the wind apps:lots of them and till now haven't had any problem with any game or app, one of my favorites is AndFTP...use it to conect to my computer via wifi to get all that i need GPS: i can't belive how fast it conects it self to satelites, i haven't tested it on a cloudy day, cause it been all sunshine these days. the time it took to conect was les then 10 sec out side, and less then 30sec-1 min indoor near a window. with my previous phones N95-8G and Omnia, if it was sunny...2-3 min, cloudy-more the 5min...sometimes 10min, and indoor by the window...never...got sick of waiting more than 10-15 min. display...it's big enough network conection....never fails...full signal anyware, unlike my wifes sam jet on "3" network witch kind of suck, outside signal quite good, but indoors....is more or leass with no signal came preinstalled with a sandisk 4g microsd card very thin-for what it has inside....
-can't install apps on sdcard (why is that???is that how all andoird OS are? do i have to root it, and if so is it possible to root the desire?) low memory on the phone to install apps and games...it practicly asks for rooting wheres all the memory???...on gsmarena and other sites...at the desires specs the Internal memory si 576 MB RAM; 512 MB ROM, and i use smart monitor lite and at system my it says my memory is 398.34, and at storage (/systems+/cache+/data adds to 250+40+147=437)...can't properly close and app -no DIVX...come one...why???..

Hopefully i'm not asking anything obvious here.Basically I worked out that my HTC cable which came with my handset charges a lot quicker than the ebay ones I bought. I did some testing and initially I thought the spare 1000mA adaptor I bought was at fault. I only got about 6% charge per 30 mins. But then I tried the same adaptor with my HTC cable, and it gave me 15% in 30 mins.So I want to buy a spare cable, but I don't know how to tell the difference. Anyone able to explain, or direct me to a cable?

So, after getting rid of my iPod Touch and a lovely Sony Ericsson Elm, I'm in the possession this beautiful device. I've been currently using this device as my main music player as well, it seems very good (apart from no equalizers).
The problem is, the music player seems to drain the battery pretty fast. I've been searching around and people have said to have gotten max 7 and a half hours on a full battery? Compared to even the iPhone 3g, which I know is UP TO 24 hours, but that doesn't ever mean you'll get full time, probably 15 or 16 hours, thats very poor.

I have my desire from the end of april. Everything was ok, battery runs about 30-50 hours depending on the load til last week monday. I start to receive a sms about missed calls and peoples tell me what then they call me operator says that phone is out of reach. Now the battery runs only a day. about 12 hours.
I take a look into Battery use and there shows that Android system uses about 63% Is this normal?

As "Allow Automatic updates" is checked I would have thought that the update should download ....... erm . automatically. Nothing happened. until I stated to download something else from the Marketplace and hey presto down came the Maps update. This is the second time this has happened. I can only assume that by initiating a download the Desire is synched with the Market, but this doesn't occur by just browsing the Market.

I have set my updates for Peep and Facebook and Freindstream for every 30 mins, but in order for this to work I need to constantly be connected to wifi or mobile web. I am fine with this, but it makes the battery die so quickly. Any way I can make my phone auto connect to wifi or mobile web to do the updates, and then auto connect. Also, any decent facebook app that isnt the default one? I have also read that you can set different profiles up for work or home etc.

waiting for TMobile to reissue their OTA update to 1.21.110.4 so wanted to install it myself. Am desperate to install it as have read in couple of places on XDA forums that it increases the media volume which is a big issue on my device (yes, yes I know some of you get blown away by yours but trust me I'm not deaf or stupid, it's just ridiculously quiet). Anyway I have managed to download a zip of the update but am confused as to what to do next.

Just wondering if there's a way to uninstall application updates? Anything short of using something like Titanium Backup for all apps before letting them update? Basically, I have a widget that's been updated to support 'night mode' - now I can't see the details over my wallpaper Obviously re-installing the app from the Market will already contain the update .

I've been using my Desire with no issues for about 6 weeks and update notifications have worked perfectly, but this week I've recieved 3 different 'updates available' notifications, but clicking on them takes me to the list of installed apps where no updates are highlighted.
Searching the forums identifies this as having been a problem with other phones models (HTC and Motorola) after firmware updates, but I don't think that can be the issue here. Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions as to cause or fix?

I'm new to Android. What happens when there are updates available to apps that I've installed from the market, and the pre-installed apps? Do I have to update it manually, and how? Or do they get updated automatically? I read that a new version of Google Maps is out, but I don't know how to update. My version does not display driving directions.

I tried sync-ing my contact book for my facebook contact updates but it showed no updates even after a few days, but my contacts do have updates on actual Facebook. So I thought I'd try to delete off my account from Accounts&Sync and re-add my account again after a few minutes. After re-adding the account, my friend stream works fine, sync-ed as per normal but when I click on my contacts book/people and tried to link my contacts to their facebook, it showed a blank list and words in the middle showing "No matches found", in other words, I don't have friends?I waited for a hours and tried to re-add and sync again but still can't link my contacts to their facebook because it doesn't show up any facebook link for me to link to my contacts no matter how I try.I resetted my phone back to factory defaults and tried again but it's still the same.
