Jul 22, 2010
Are there any video players for the HTC Desire that support MKV playback? this would be VERY advantageous for me as most of my movies/music videos/videos are in MKV format
If not, what are the best players for AVI/MP4 files?

I am working on an Android application which is supposed to play videos over HTTP on Android devices. Before we setup a server to host the video files just wanted a few things clarified: As per the developer documentation, Android supports .mp4 and .3gp container formats for video.
The audio-video codec used for our media files is H.263(video) and AAC LC (Audio). I did a little experiment and passed URL of one of the video files to the MediaPlayer class and got the following error: Command PLAYER_INIT completed with an error or info PVMFErrContentInvalidForProgressivePlayback.
From the docs, I came to know that for progressive playback, the video's index (e.g moov atom) should be at the start of the file. How do we make our videos Android-ready? What are the different considerations that we need to make?

I was just wondering how people play their video files as I cannot find a media player on the Desire. I am currently using a file manager app and then selecting the file, but I would have thought the phone had some kind of standard app installed that would let me browse and play my content.

Anyway I have a couple of video's I'd like to watch and the only way is through photo's widget/program I know there are other players on the market, so what I need is one that has good functionality like being able to playback with repeat similar to windows media player. Don't need a player that needs a browser open to function or using up system resources.

Been struggling with this since receiving my X. Seems like no matter what player I use the playback is jerky. It's very subtle, almost as if the video is dropping a frame or so every second. I've tried the stock player, Astro, Rockplayer, mPlayer, Zimly, Act, and the list goes on and the problem still persists.
I've encoded (using handbrake) with all of the settings suggested on the boards and have tweaked things on my own trying to find the proper setting, but still no luck. The strange and frustrating thing is that the exact same files play just fine on my 1st gen iPod touch (clearly an inferior piece of hardware) and on my wife's incredible. These encodes are of standard def DVDs at average settings (a full movie is about 1.3gb, all h.264 mp4 files.
I was able to improve playback by rebooting the X and then playing the video, but this doesn't seem like an acceptable solution every time I want to watch something. I tend to encode and watch a lot of stuff on my commute to/from work, and I'd really like to replace my touch with the X, but the media capabilities are falling way short. Considering switching to the Inc as I know it's able to play my media properly, but I'd prefer to keep the X for the larger screen size (though the Inc does seem to feel better when using one-handed). I'm on the fence right now, but if the X can't function as expected then it might be going back. Unfortunately I only have until the 1st to return it so I don't think I can hold out and see if 2.2 fixes this issue.

Does anyone know anything about the video playback features of the EVO 4G? I'm coming from the iPhone where playback was limited to mp4 (encoded with h.264 or ffmpeg).
Either way, this thing can supposedly handle 720p. Is a 720p mkv going to be possible on this thing or am I going to have to encode video for this and buy some special player?
That's one thing about the iPhone i'm sure I'm going to miss -- the core functions like music and video playing are built into the OS and work rock solid. With android, are there going to be a bunch of odd video players to download and try?

I'm new to the Android OS having been a Symbian (2nd phone is a Nokia N97) and Windows Mobile user previously. My question regards a copy of Family Guy (Something, Something, Something, Dark Side) which I purchased yesterday. The standard DVD also comes with a digital copy on the DVD which, when inserted into the drive brings up a choice of transferring the file to my computer to be copied over to my Desire as either a iTunes file or a Windows Media Video (WMV).Ideally I want to avoid the iTunes route as currently I have no use for that program on my system so I would like to be able to use the WMV version. When I copied the file to my Desire, it didn't play and the phone didn't seem to recognise it. Can anyone please give me advice on how to play a WMV on my Desire?

I tried a few different players from the market including a few that I had to use an app installer to install. So far I have had no luck playing AVI's & MVA's, does anyone know if Android 2.0 includes a universal player like VLC? If not is anyone working on a player? I understand you can convert files to MP4 & 3GP but I would rather find something that can just play the standard format my camera records in.

I got the X10 2 or 3 weeks ago, previous phone was a Samsung Jet. I watch quite a few films but so far I can't get the quality. The files are mainly divx encoded but I have been converting to mpeg4 to play them in Mediascape. The video is skipping / jumping even though it is not at a super-high resolution, bitrate etc. Does anyone know what the best settings are to get video that's watchable? The Jet would play divx files no problem at all and I assumed the X10 would be at least as good...

As far as I understand, immersive mode can be implemented in two ways in 4.4 KitKat Feature Spotlight: Apps Can Now Go Truly Full-Screen, Hide The Navigation Bar
the user has to swipe down to bring back the navigation bar (the book readers, games example) or touch the screen (the video players example). Is there a way (even if it involves a custom rom) to make video players use the swipe down implementation? The reason I ask is that I have a toddler who I often let watch cartoons on youtube (ie while waiting for food at a restaurant...). He constantly touches buttons on the navigation bar on accident which stops the video and then I have to take the phone from him, restart the app, restart the video, and give it back. I would love to be able to use the swipe-down implementation in this scenario.

Are there any video or music player apps that are capable of recognizing media on the internal storage? I know that the HTC players can do it, but I'm looking for something with a few more features. I've tried mixzing, Act 1, and cubed (aka RockOn), but they each can only see files on SD cards. There does not seem to be a way to tell the apps to look in the /emmc directory. I'm new to Android so maybe it's just a matter of developers updating their apps for the Incredible?
I was thinking, alternatively, is there a way to create a symbolic link with an app like Astro to make the files *appear* like they're on the SD card?
