Android : Does Phone Set - Support Scaling Video
Jan 14, 2010
Using a VideoView is it possible to set a scale factor for Android? By Default the video view resizes itself to fit the encoded resolution of the Video. Can I force Android to render a video into a smaller or larger rect?

How does Android handle scaling of a video being played within a VideoView?
So for example if I have a video that is say 480 X 270 (width and height), aspect ratio 16:9. And, say the VideoView is added to a LinearLayout with LayoutParams of (480, 270). What will be width and height of the rendered video in portrait orientation in a device that is 320 X 480? In landscape? In another device that is 320 X 550?

Is there any way we can rotate a video in Android (specially in Java layer) as it supports ino BREW or WM?
Also, how does the orientation change (portrait/landscape) is different than the video rotation?

Is video recording supported in 1.5? I got it mostly working with the Haykuro 1.5 ADP image - the video file was legally formatted but didn't play properly.
With yesterday's official 1.5 images, it doesn't work at all.
setVideoEncoder() fails,
with the wonderfully informative error message
"setVideoEncoder failed".

Sorry if this question already has been asked and answered, but does anyone know of a video player for Android that supports standard subtitles in the .srt and .sub formats? If it can play Div-X videos as well, then that's a nice bonus, and perhaps even a necessary one in order for it to show subs with correct timing? Any suggestions?

I just experienced the video recording on G1 based on the system.img of android1.0. The process just lasts about 3 seconds, then blocks. And the generated file is empty. What's the matter? Doesn't this version support video recording, yet?

Accroding to GregS's "Announcing OpenCORE 2.0 release" mention, video telephony (a.k.a. 2way) engine is supported by OpenCORE 2.0. but he(?) was not sure that is included at Cupcake version.
So, can I get information about any progress for supporting video telephony service? like, whether video telehpony service is supported at Cupcake or any other version.
And where can I get any document about OpenCORE 2.XXX release?

I know that as of now it's not possible, and the hacked usb port is still pretty useless. But as far as I know, with the VDP profile on Bluetooth it should be theoretically possible with more (relatively) simple software hack. As I understand Bluetooth profiles, they are essentially software drivers for the hardware, and most Android devices support Bluetooth 2.1 which should be fast enough (~366KBytes/s) to transmit standard def video.
Just wondering if anyone is working on or knows of a way to support additional bluetooth profiles on a rooted Android system?

I am able to play a local video in full screen through Mediaplayer. But supplying an RTSP link to it gives a blank screen. Using VideoView, however, I am able to play the same RTSP link but not in full size. DavidSparks I am attaching a cc to you cos I have seen a similar kind of issue in your name. Can anyone help me in playing a full screen RTSP video. The Youtube application in G1 does so.

The company I work for produces allot of video and we want to target as many devices as possible, but the question came up of what does the Android do? I personally own an Android based phone running 2.1, but I can't seem to get the HTML 5 tag to work. Even when I can trigger the browser to playback the video it just throws a notification error that it can't.Are there guidelines to producing Android/HTML 5 compatible videos? Is it truly supported?

I downloaded the 2.1 update from sprint and I can longer watch AVI videos. Please tell me my phone is bugged! I've re-transferred videos I previously watched on CL14 but they all say "sorry this video can't be played."
I've tried several different media players. I really hope this is just a random bug on my specifiv phone because I watch a lot of tv on it and I really don't have extra time to convert file types everyday.

I have always loved my Windows PC for the fact, that there are some programs with which I could watch movies with my girlfriend and have
1) English subtitles displayed for me on top of the screen and
2) Greek subtitles for her on the bottom of the screen.
Now, with my android mini pc and I cannot find an app which displays 2 subtitles at the same time.
My question: Is this there any app out there that and I just haven't found it?

the gmail app on the DINC does not support video and pic sharing? m I missing something here. When you take a vid and go to share, gmail comes up as one of your options. If you proceed down this route, you don't get an error, but the vid never gets attached and delivered. The only way to do this is through the HTC Mail app. On this same note, another gripe I have is why Android lists the sharing options if you can't actually use them to share. You can't share a video over Handcent/Messaging Apps...so why show them as options for sharing? You can't upload to facebook directly, so why list them as an option. Seems like a glaring issue that will confuse newbies (my wife) and may ultimately affect their adoption of the platform. I'm all for the customization and openness of Android, but they need to work out these little quirks if they want to capture any respectable market share.

I badly need a good video player with playlist support and shuffle.
I have one of those cheap Chinese ICS tablets (btw working pretty good) and I planned to use it in my car to let my 17 month old daughter watch some videos I got from YouTube while driving home from our vacation. That is a 7 hours drive and she won't handle it without some entertainment. However I cannot find a suitable app, paid or free
I got so far
- Act Player.. does the job but only on Gingerbread (I have a GB Galaxy S phone). On ICS the playlist feature does not work
- Vplayer - does not support shuffle and after 4th or 5th video starts to stutter
- Mobo player - does the job but does not support shuffle and the little monster is getting tired of the first 10 vids she has to watch all over again every day

I have some transparent graphics in my game. Up through 2.0.0 they have looked fined. Since Android 2.0.1 though, some parts of the fully transparent regions of the graphics are instead slightly opaque (e.g. a circular gradient that goes to 100% transparency will have a faint halo around it).
I have tried putting my graphics in ../raw/ but that did not help (as described at http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/graphics/2d-graphics.html#d...)
I have also tried exporting the Adobe Illustrator graphics at 16-bit pngs (instead of 8bit), but that did not help either.

I have a texture with 8 equally sized stripes that I am using as a wall with OpenGL. On my Nexus One it scales it properly However, in emulators and on a G1 (and probably on other hardware), it does not scale properly, as the stripes remain the same width, while the height scales as it should. Is there an option that I need to set that is set to default on my nexus one but not on other platforms?

I have some 9-patch images on my app, and they work great on the medium density. When I load the app on a High density emulator/device, these images look grainy. It happens only to 9-patch images. The others look great after the pre- scaling. Is there a way to make them look good after the scaling, like the non-9-patch images?

In a start activity of our android application we're using a linearlayout with an background image for whole space. The image size is 320x480 - the same as device resolution, we're using for testing. The problem is, the image will be scaled und looks not so nice. I tried to use imageview instead, but I've got black borders.
Some ideas, how to avoid scaling or how to get the proper size for background image?!

I can't wait to try out the new 1.6 goodies, but first I'm retargeting my existing applications, and I decided to start with Daisy Garden. Changing to android:targetSdkVersion="4" caused the application to segfault on startup and discovered that the BitmapFactory.decodeResource method now performs scaling based on screen density. In this case the behaviour is unwanted - I'm loading a set of masks that are scaled later during composition. So I've quickly inserted the following method, which seems to perfectly mimic the previous behaviour:
private Bitmap loadBitmap(int resId) { BitmapFactory.Options options = new BitmapFactory.Options(); options.inTargetDensity = 1; options.inDensity = 1; return BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), resId, options);
}

I have a WebView which I'm trying to have scale to a certain percent on loading the page. The iPhone version of this software uses the HTML meta-tag:<meta name="viewport" content="width=320, initial-scale=0.95, maximum-scale=2.0, user-scalable=1">..Since Android's WebView doesn't seem to respect that tag I hard-coded the percent using setInitialScale(). However, the WebView is just flat-out ignoring this method call. No matter what number I put in there it shows at 100%.

I'm loading a URL into a WebView and I'm having difficulty setting the "scale" of the web-page. Specifically, the web-page is too big (800x600) for the screen, so my thought is to use "setInitialScale(50)" to reduce the size. Here is some sample code that doesn't work (i.e. the web-page doesn't scale to 50%)
WebView wv = (WebView)findViewById(R.id.webview);
wv.loadUrl("http://www.example.com/android/symptom");
wv.setInitialScale(50);
I also tried switching the order of the function calls but I get the same resultŠi.e.,
WebView wv = (WebView)findViewById(R.id.webview); wv.setInitialScale(50); wv.loadUrl("http://www.example.com/android/symptom");
As an alternative, I have tried to use the "zoomOut()" function like this:
WebView wv = (WebView)findViewById(R.id.webview);
wv.loadUrl("http://www.example.com/android/symptom"); wv.zoomOut();
This approach works for a split second, and then the image reverts to its original size.
Here is my content view:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/ android"
android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <WebView android:id="@+id/webview"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" /> </LinearLayout>

I need to scale down images coming from a Network stream without losing quality. I am aware of this solution Android: Strange out of memory issue but it is too coarse - inSampleSize is an integer and does not allow finer control over the resulting dimensions. That is, I need to scale images to specific h/w dimensions (and keeping aspect ratio). I dont mind having a DIY bicubic/lancoz algorithm in my code but I cant find any examples that would work on Android as they all rely on Java2D (JavaSE). EDIT: Ive attached a quick source. The original is 720x402 HD screen capture. Please ignore the top 2 thumbnails. The top large image is resized automatically by android (as part of layout) to about 130x72. It is nice and crisp. The bottom image is resized with API and has severe artifacting. Code...
