HTC Desire :: Show Off The Screen - Encode Video?

Hi everyone. I have the Desire, and I'm loving it so far. Can anyone please tell me the best way to encode video so it looks it's best on the (amazing) screen? I tried a hi-res mp4 movie, but got sound but no picture (not sure what resolution it was in, sorry - I'm at work now and can't access the file. If anyone can let me know the best resolution to recode movies, and best format (eg mp4) I'd be grateful. Do you know of any sample movies I can download to show the screen off to my friends with iPhones?

Watching video via my Behold2 is my major thing. But I have to convert the videos and put that in the sdcard when I want to watch something. Is there a better way? Plus, I couldn't find any good mencoder front-end for linux. Can any one let me know an easy way to convert video files on linux?

I was wondering if it is possible that instead of using the button on top to take the phone out of sleep if it would be possible to use the track pad ball thing. I'm do.ding that I'm not using this button at all. Am I the only one?

I keep all my music on my PC in MP3 format at 320kbps. I prefer 192kbps on my phone as I'm not too concerned about quality on the move and I can fit more music on that way. I don't want to keep 2 versions of each album as I have loads and that's not really practical. At the moment I sync using WMP12 as it allows you to re-encode to a lower bitrate as it syncs but the only problem is that it re-encodes to WMA format. I don't really have a problem with that as it's only going on my phone but with Froyo there's a bug that means the phone can no longer read the artist tag of WMA files. Since Froyo has now been out for months and there's no word about the bug from Google it appears there's no chance of it getting fixed (a cunning ploy to stop people using WMA seems the most likely explanation I guess) So can anyone recommend a piece of software I can use for Windows that will re-encode to a lower MP3 bitrate as I sync? Does such a thing exist?

I dug up an old relic from a prehistoric civilization. A MiTraveler 7 inch netbook with android 2.2. Youtube videos give message "Video cannot be played". Although there's an App Market app on it, flash player, photon, or any video player won't show up. There appears no way to update this thing. Music won't play all the time either.

I´ve seen similars code that use this but i gives me this error "URLEncoder cannot be resolved" on this line:
String paramString = p.getName() + "=" + URLEncoder.encode(p.getValue(),"UTF-8");
It says the function is encode(String s, String enc)
On "enc" it says the encoded scheme to be used.
I´m running Eclipse SDK Version: 3.6.1 and i don´t know how to solve this error.

I'm new to the Android OS having been a Symbian (2nd phone is a Nokia N97) and Windows Mobile user previously. My question regards a copy of Family Guy (Something, Something, Something, Dark Side) which I purchased yesterday. The standard DVD also comes with a digital copy on the DVD which, when inserted into the drive brings up a choice of transferring the file to my computer to be copied over to my Desire as either a iTunes file or a Windows Media Video (WMV).Ideally I want to avoid the iTunes route as currently I have no use for that program on my system so I would like to be able to use the WMV version. When I copied the file to my Desire, it didn't play and the phone didn't seem to recognise it. Can anyone please give me advice on how to play a WMV on my Desire?

I have setup Eclipse classics, download all the APis using the application managers, etc. The AVD only shows a blank screen with "android" text at the center. I even tried download a tic tac toe program. The AVD shows the same result.
For the AVD device, I've selected, I went about as this:
1) click on the "new" button in Eclipse-> Android Virtual Device Manager
2) I entered AVD Name, choose Nexus 7 as device.
3) The Target is Google APIs, Google API 11
4) The rest of the options are default.
Upon launch, the title shows 5554:myavd with android text in the middle.
I have tried other AVD like Nexus One and target to be Android 4.2, but it showed same result.
There is errors on the android emulator dialog.
It says could not
Failed to create Context 0x3005
and could not get wglGetExtionsStringARB

I often go for long distance bike rides and wondered whether there an app so if I have an accident or breakdown my wife could log on her PC and see my location. Either a continuous track or maybe I could push a button on my desire which would up load my position at that point in time.

Can anyone help? everytime I play a Youtube video on my Desire it plays for a couple of seconds and then Stops with the error message 'Sorry this video cannot be played, there was a problem while playing' I have tried allsorts to try and rectify it without success.

I have posted a message for this topic. And my requirement changed, seek some help here. What I want to do is to make my application run on the Home screen, like the widget show on the home screen. But I can decide how my application was shown on the screen, and the application will have to be in front of all the others ( including widget, I think this also prevent me using a widget). It is something like when I get a SMS, I will run my application and show something. the application will be show in the most front. And it can not removed by change the widget setting( unless remove the application). Can anyone help me on this? Or give me some advice. Shall I modify the android source code to achieve the target?

My problem is that my phone's display does not show anything but it's even working so I can pick up the phone when someone's ringing but I can't see anything. Yesterday I tried to remove the battery and put it back and now I can't use my phone. I've read that someone has the same problem but he didn't find any solution.

Is there any way to actually show the address in "People"?If I enter someone's address then the contact has an option - "View home address" which opens the address in Google maps.However the only way to view the full address is to edit the contact or to look it up in google maps.Is there any way to get the address book to just show the full address?

Having just moved from a Hero to the Desire today, I tried what I had already done on the Hero, that of creating '/media/audio/ringtones' I created an MP3 file and loaded it into the directory, but I cannot find how to get this item to show in the list to select in MENU/SETTINGS/SOUND/PHONE RINGTONE. The phone was updated to 2.2 Froyo today, has something changed I have not found out about?

I have uninstalled some apps yet they still show under the Programs, why is that? For example I had an app called Bubble Burst Free BUT I uninstalled it - though now when I long press on the homescreen, select Program, Bubble Burst Free still appears (along with a few other uninstalled apps) though when you select it nothing happens, which obviously shows it has been deleted BUT its annoying to still see it there. How do I go about removing those uninstalled apps from appearing?

I'm writing this for the HTC Desire, but it should work for all other models and most likely all other Android phones. The process was identical for my old Sony Ericsson C905 and my girlfriends SE W580i.
The problem is the phone is looking for the album art within the track itself. So, we need to embed it, because having a .jpg file in the folder will not do. The phone does not look for the album art there, so it's not going to find it!
1. First you need to download a freeware program called mp3tag. Install it and run the program.
You may donate to mp3tag if you like the software. I've been using it for quite some time and I gave them $20. Not much, but I hope it helped them
2. Secondly, drag and drop all the music that does not have album art stored within the file. Highlight a number of tracks, best to do this an album at a time. Now you can either right click in the empty album art box like the image below and find the album art on your computer.

I'm writing an android application which listens the phone calling events. What I want to do is, if there is a call incomes or outgoes, an activity shows with my customized info.I want to this screen keeps showing during the calling period. However, if a call is coming, the system UI which shows the contact always appears on top of my activity.I've found some apps already realized this function, but mine can't.

My question is kinda strange: is there a way to show incoming calls and SMS on my computer screen while my HTC Legend is connected to it by USB?
When I'm the university library I've to put the cellphone in silent mode and often I end up loosing calls&SMS while I'm working on my laptop.
So it would be very nice if there was a way to notify me with incoming calls (maybe on windows 7 task bar) while my cellphone is connected to the pc via USB.
Does anyone know a way to achieve this?

Now i want this screen to be populated with some data in fields like name, phone number, address etc. I found that if i do something like newIntent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.NAME, "Some Name"); will show this screen with name "Some Name" being shown in the name field this is fine for me now i dont understand how will i fill the city, state and zip fields similarly.
I found the ContactsContract.Intents.Insert has a POSTAL attribute for address but there are no specific attributes for city, state and zip in ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.
Also i found that ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.StructuredPostal has the city, state and zip attributes but still i dont know how can i use this to prepopulate the Edit/Add contact screen with values of city, state and zip.

Coming from an iphone for the last few years, one thing I have gotten used to are notifications that show up on the screen, even on the lock screen. Is there a way to do this on Android? I only get notifications at the top and then have to unlock the phone and scroll down to see them. This also goes for texts as well.

Hope someone can help, When I transfer a pic from my Desire via bluetooth to my vista laptop,all i get in my pictures folder is a file. not a jpg file ( no Thumbnail pic) When i click on it, it asks what program I want to open it with. all my pics open with Windows photo gallery. Why does it not convert straight to a jpg?

My device HTC desire doesnt show SMS sender name upon recieving sms(local sms), instead showing the sender number.I am having this sender in my contact list. There is no issues while recieving international SMS, only having problem with local sms. But when the same person calls me, its displaying the caller name correctly.
What would be the reason?
I am in QATAR where country code is +974.
I tried the following.Contacts saved with the country code(+974)
- then its showing the name when sms is recieved, but call recieving
stopped showing caller name - only number is shown.
One thing i noticed is, while recieving SMS, the sender number is preceeded by country code(+974) while recieving a call only caller number is there.

Is it possible to show only mobile phone numbers in the messaging contacts section. I seem to get multiple versions of the same contact showing up depending on how much info I have for them - 1 for mobile, 1 for landline, 1 for email, but in the phonebook section, all this info shows up under 1 contact.
