I often go for long distance bike rides and wondered whether there an app so if I have an accident or breakdown my wife could log on her PC and see my location. Either a continuous track or maybe I could push a button on my desire which would up load my position at that point in time.

I would like to use My Desire with offline maps and GPs like a satnav eg TomTom. As I understand it Google maps requires the data connection up to load relevant map. This can be expensive when roaming in Europe. So is it possible to obtain maps for memory and use the GPS to show location just like a TomTom.

I am not living near a big city listed on the weather location list and when at home, the current location usually is indicated some dozen miles away from my home. This could be a cosmetic problem, but in the Alps (where I am living) weather a short distance away can be quite different from where you are.
Besides that, it would be nice to know the weather at home while beeing abroad.
I have found this erroneous behaviour on my phone, please let me know if you have any idea how to resolve it. However, when I open this intent, the gps on the device starts and google maps first displays my location instead of the location in the URI. This happens only the first time you open google maps. If I go back to my app and make the same selection, then the correct position on the map appears.I tried using something like this: geo:0,0?q=*business+near+city, however this doesnt centers the map on a position, but in the nearest address.

I read that Android does not support getting the click coordinates for some reason.
I want to do something like the little popup that appears on the contacts on Android 2.1+ when you select a person's icon and a window appears at the row location showing different options to contact that person. Also in the twitter application they do something similar.
I guess it is acting more like a Context Menu, but what I read is that Context Menus cannot be customized. How are this popup windows at location done?
I am writing an app that requires the user's current location (lastknownlocation won't be very helpful) and displays a list of all the closest "items" to them taken from the database.I have got the finding of the closest items working well but only using a hardcoded latitude and longitude location for the time being but now it is time to implement finding the actual location.Can anyone provide an example of how to have the app find the current fine location in the background and have the app wait. I only need the location once not updates as the person moves. I have implemented a location listener however I understand getting a GPS fix can be slow. I have seen other examples using last known location or implementing the location listener which continues to run and update however as my Activity needs the location coordinates before it can display anything the app just crashes. I need to show a Progress Dialog while its searching.
How can I have the locationlistener run once in the background and then remove location updates once it finds the location. I need the rest of the application to wait until it has a GPS location or timeout after say 20-30seconds. I would like a ProgressDialog up so the user knows that something is going on, but it just has to be the spinning loading animation not a percentage or anything. If possible I would like the user to be able to cancel the dialog if they are sick of waiting which then they can search by typing suburb etc instead.I have been trying to do it with threads but it is getting way more complicated than I feel it should be and still not working anyway. On iPhone this is much more simple?Can anyone provide a nice way of doing this, I have been ripping my hair out for a week on this and it is really putting me behind schedule for the rest of the app completion date.
ProgressDialog during location tasks either won't show or force closes - I have tried everything!
I now have it in a Handler with a full 1 second delay (one method another post suggested) but it doesn't show. I simply am stuck. Threads are usually force closing when I use those methods.
A few of us at work are wondering if we can use the google map or anyother type of locating device on our phones without phone service. Does the google maps show our location using the cell towers?

View 11 Replies View Relatedi haven't found a single widget that will actually show the "feels like" temperature of your location. its pretty annoying because right now where i am, theres a HUGE difference in 'normal' temperature and what the 'feels like' temperature is. does anyone know of a good looking one (aka like the htc widget or beautiful widget) that actually gives you the 'feels like' temperature?

Getting my location on google maps using mobile networks only puts me in Stockholm, and so nothing location based works. Very frustrating.GPS eventually gets me back on track, but I dont' keep this on all the time.

I have a debranded Desire running the updated radio rom (the one that restores the broken wifi)
When using position based apps on my new Desire (Android 2.1) I can't help but notice that finding the location always takes forever (>1 minute after switching GPS on).My old HTC HD (Windows Mobile 6.1) was much quicker in providing a location after switching on GPS. The trick was, that the HTC HD had a pre-installed application "QuickGPS" that regularly downloaded some data that apparently helped in locating the satellites and/or calculating the position. On my old device I thus had a valid position typically in less than 10 seconds after switching GPS on.I haven't found any similar utility for Android and I don't want to have GPS active all the time for battery reasons. Are there any similar tools or other "tricks" that can help the GPS subsystem to provide the location quicker?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anybody had the same issue with GPS as I did. When I launched Locations first time, it found the satelite very fast. Now it almost cannot find a satelite to update my location. I wrote almost, because once it did manage, but that was once in at least twenty tries. Do you have any idea how to check if the radio is ok. I read somewhere that one should try with master reset of the phone. If so, would it be enough to backup my data with Titanium backup and option "Backup all users apps + system data" and restore it later on? Will that make a full restore of my phone or do I have to backup some additoial data? Like, what will happend to my personalize data, apps passwords etc.

As a test I went for a drive today and whist 'Latitude' showed where I was, the google home page still showed the wrong location, and HTC widget still showed just 'United Kingdom'...

I have a problem since few days with sw HTC Locations ( I think is that).
Let me explain, often when I'm using the phone asks me to turn on the GPS because otherwise the navigator of Location does not work, when I do cancels and then get out, I came back after just 15 seconds and then continues with the same demands indefinitely.
I reset phone and I formatted the memory card , but now after reconfiguring the mobile phone presents itself to me again, what would it be?
I also checked with Kaspersky, but nothing found. That practically stops me using a mobile phone?
I was wondering if it is possible that instead of using the button on top to take the phone out of sleep if it would be possible to use the track pad ball thing. I'm do.ding that I'm not using this button at all. Am I the only one?

For example I had an app called Bubble Burst Free BUT I uninstalled it - though now when I long press on the homescreen, select Program, Bubble Burst Free still appears (along with a few other uninstalled apps) though when you select it nothing happens, which obviously shows it has been deleted BUT its annoying to still see it there. View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm writing this for the HTC Desire, but it should work for all other models and most likely all other Android phones. The process was identical for my old Sony Ericsson C905 and my girlfriends SE W580i.
The problem is the phone is looking for the album art within the track itself. So, we need to embed it, because having a .jpg file in the folder will not do. The phone does not look for the album art there, so it's not going to find it!
1. First you need to download a freeware program called mp3tag. Install it and run the program.
You may donate to mp3tag if you like the software. I've been using it for quite some time and I gave them $20. Not much, but I hope it helped them
2. Secondly, drag and drop all the music that does not have album art stored within the file. Highlight a number of tracks, best to do this an album at a time. Now you can either right click in the empty album art box like the image below and find the album art on your computer.
I live in the United Kingdom and have been trying to find the town that I live in, but when I do a search for it I find nothing. some help so I can have my town displayed on screen? At the moment I have showing a town which is 15 miles from me.
