HTC Desire :: No Internet - No Signal ?
Jun 30, 2010
I recently bought a desire and I love it, the only problem I have with it is that sometimes I can be somewhere, like a train station I change at, and even though I have full signal my phone won't make/receive calls or receive/send messages? This only seems to happen when my internet disappears, I had it at a Stevie Wonder concert at the weekend as well, full signal but no internet which somehow prevented me doing the above?

I got my i7500 two days a go and I'm still getting familiar with it and I need some help. It seems to me that there is no WAP. So, how do I connect to internet if there is no WiFi signal? This is the first of many, many, many wonderful questions and I thank you for answering!

Is this even possible? Does an app have the ability to increase wifi signal and get 40-50% faster internet ?

Right basically you can find the UK T mobile internet settings on the T mobile website. On the Speed Test app, the highest speeds I get are 1.8m/bs downloads and around 500kpbs upload. However, those were at off peak times at night etc (probably when nobody is using the net).Generally I get anything from 0.3 m/bs to 0.9 m/bs though. Lately I've been experiencing some inconsistent internet speeds and reconnection attempts so for I've gone back to the default settings. Tbh though I'm not sure if it makes much difference.

I want to reach out to others here before I take my Moment back to Best Buy to exchange it for another Moment.
My signal strength fluctuates wildly just sitting in the same spot. With the Hero I got a constant 5 of 6 bars, but the Moment will vary between 0 and 5 of 6 bars. But it's more complicated than that.
It seems that whenever the EVDO data kicks in, it causes the signal strength to drop to 0 or 1 bar. Once the data is idle, the EVDO indicator turns grey and then changes from EV(^v) to EV(D). At that point the single strength will return to 3 or 4 bars.
At times, though not as consistently or often, the EVDO connection will fall back to 1xRTT and will switch between them every few minutes. This will occur even when the signal strength bars are in the 3 to 4 range.
So, the my questions are...
Does the signal strength apply to the data signal or just the voice signal?
Is there any legitimate reason for the signal strength to vary wildly like I've described, even when sitting in the same recliner where the Hero had a constant 5 bar connection and data service that never wavered?
Is anyone else having signal strength and/or data service issues?
Should I exchange the Moment for another Moment or will I likely experience the same issue?

I bought the HTC Desire unlocked from CWH and love it. Though the only problem i got is that I can't seem to get a 3G signal. When i set my settings to GSM only i only get GPRS, WCDMA only i get H(signal) and when i set it at the GSM/WCDMA auto i also get the HSPA but can't get to 3G in anyone of them. Am I doing sth wrong or is it normal ? I got the 3G signal only once in my house but I can't seem to get the 3G signal again .

In an attempt to conserve my battery I've been switching between GPRS & 3G. I only switch 3G on when I need it e.g. browsing the web. Sometimes though, depending where I am, the GPRS signal is better than the 3G so I end up switching back. Is there an app that will show 3G signal strength?

My Desire has started acting strangely today. Wifi works OK, phone signal works OK, what doesn't seem to work all of a sudden is the data signal. Any data signal, 3G, HDSPA or even GPRS - there is no icon in the notification bar and no access to the mobile internet.
I've tried:
* rebooting my phone
* turning APN and on again with and without Wifi
* checking my APN settings (OK)
* reinstalling the newest radio (one that ends in 20 - was working fine up to now)
* reinstalling my version of 2.2 (Defrost 2.5a)
* checking my carrier's site to see if there are any probs (Virgin Mobile)
* Oh and I've travelled about 50 miles today on my commute from outside London to central London with no signal at any time so I assume it isn't a local antenna problem.
All to no avail. II first noticed it at 0700 this morning - so it has now been like this for nearly 12 hours. The icon and connection remains stubbornly off. If I wasn't getting wifi or signal I would be really worried, but the fact that I can fills me with hope that it is either a setting or user error.

I bought my phone week ago and problems with GPS started immediately: I installed MOTONAV (iGO for Motorola) and tried to test it and it worked perfectly... for about 10 minutes and than message "GPS signal lost"... without come back. Reset of GPS or phone didn't solved the problem... I tried GPS signal later (after 15-30 minutes) with GPS Test app and there it was - working just like that: catches signal after 10 seconds!
After that I thought application was a problem: uninstalled it, downloaded Navigon - same thing: signal lost after 5-15 minutes of using navapp.
Hard reset of phone, navigon again - same issue.

I have my Desire on Three UK network. It used to fall back to a 2G signal when there was no 3g coverage, for example when I am at home.
I noticed yesterday that my phone just wouldn't get a signal in the house, I then checked my old N95 which still has a Three Uk sim card and same problem.
Anyway I went to work and same issue inside the office. Can get a 3g signal when there is one but no 2g signal.
I deceided to phone up Three customer service to see if there was a fault or something but no real help there apart from they said they would report what I said to their technical team.
I then come home and look on the net and see things like this....

If they have switched of 2g here then I am fuming as it means I cant receive any calls at home !

poor signal reception been fixed yet? I'm interested in buying either a new sim free desire, x10, or a blackberry bold 9700. Leaning more towards the desire, but the only thing holding me back is the poor reception problems people have been experiencing. I'm on orange, and based in the east midlands, UK. Not had bad reception in my area with other phones in the past, so if got the desire and did have problems, it would annoy me to say the least

I'm thinking about buying a Desire on 3 in the UK and wanted to know if I could turn it into a wireless hotspot and use its 3G signal to power another device - like an iPad? Anyone know? Or am asking a bit too much from it? I think I've seen it on Nokias in the past.

I have had my desire for about 3 weeks now on O2 contract, and have an annoying problem.I appear to lose signal intermittantly, and end up with a little grey 'x' by my bars. However, this then STAYS like this even when I am back in a normal area, sometimes for hours before I have even noticed that reception was lost. The only way that I have found to get reception back is to power off my phone and restart it.I have called o2, and the only advise they had for me was to remove the sim card and 'give it a little wipe',

I have a Desire on T-Mobile in the UK. Before updating to Froyo, the signal strength fluctuated between 1 and 4 bars. Since updating, it fluctuates between 0 and 4 bars, even when the phone is just on my desk at home.I did a coverage check on T-Mobile's site and the results for my postcode are "good", which they show as 3 bars out of 5.What could be the reason for the fluctuating signal? I would assume that if I was in a weak signal area for T-Mobile, that the signal would constantly be low. Am I wrong to assume this? I can't understand why it fluctuates so wildly for no apparent reason.

So my Desire's been working perfectly since I got it on Saturday. Today I've noticed that it's not using mobile data. Not an issue at home with my wi-fi or at work* but it's irritating. I haven't changed any settings and triple checked that every box that should be checked is. Anyone else with a Desire having this problem? Is there a T-mobile hiccup today?
Though I can't see how it would make a difference, today was the day my old number got ported over. Oh. They mentioned there would be connectivity problems during the transition period.

I was wondering if there was an app or indeed if the Desire has the ability to transmit a low powered signal on FM?
You know how some Nokia phones can transmit a weak signal on FM so that if you are playing an mp3 or listening to an Internet stream on your phone you can pick it up on your car stereo and listen through that.

If I take my HTC handset to another country, will it charge me for just having it turned on (no 3G, apps, widgets or anything that uses the net in some way turned off). Cause I take it, it will try to find an Orange signal in that country if they do have Orange there so will it charge me for that? (I'm on contract by the way). Next question is similar to my last question. Can I still use my internet allowance from my contract (500Mb) in another country or will I get charged?
What is an unbranded phone? Is mine unbranded? I'm just gonna take a wild guess - since I purchased my mobile through a third-party site (in this case, e2save), those guys simply buy the airtime off Orange and get the handset directly from the manufacturer so is this an unbranded phone? What are the advantages of having an unbranded phone?.............

I have been an avid iphone user for the past 2 years, but with having went through 4 iphone 4 handsets and still not happy i decided to make the jump. anyhow, on to the matter in hand, is anyone having wifi signal strength issues? If i'm close to the router. i.e 5-10feet and line of sight, it works fine, with 3 bars. but if i move farther away say into my kitchen, 20ft and through plasterboard walls it will drop to 2 bars. this is understandable, but it will then fluctuate between no bars, to 3, then to 1 then 2, then 3, then..... you get the drift. i can accept strength deterioration with distance, but for it to be so erratic i find it a bit strange. i have changed the channel my router broadcasts on and it hasn't made any difference. other than that very happy with the phone, just getting used to Android. Is anyone else noticing this with their wifi? all my other devices have a constant strength, be it 1, 2 or 3 bars and no erratic behavior. is it faulty wifi, should i sent it back to Amazon for a replacement?? or is it just the way it is?

I seem to have a poor signal alot of the time. 1 or 2 bars is not unusual in places my old phone used to have full signal strength. It went on roaming for some reason in the shopping centre today. It is always on H or nothing. My old phone used to drop onto edge and GPRS if it didn't get a H signal. And what about 3G? An all singing all dancing phone is no good if it cant perform its main function.

I've been having problems with a Milestone, so i decided to give it away and buy a Desire. Overall, the phone is good. But i'm having a major issue that troubles me: Bought the phone yesterday and immediately updated to Froyo. I'm having problems with the antenna (which i believe is in the lower right corner). By just holding my phone with my hand (not touching the antenna) drops my signal significantly. For HDSPA, it goes down from 3 bars to 0 (but i can make calls) and for GSMA it goes from 4 to 3. As i found out through the menus, the drop for HDSPA is around -10dbm and more. I'd like to ask: is this normal; I know that you shouldn't touch the antenna, but on mine bars goes down all the way just by holding the phone.
