General :: Using Multiple TTS Engines?

how to set up an android phone to use multiple text-to-speech engines without having to go to the settings to switch back and forth between them. I currently use IVONA in Anki for learning languages where IVONA's range of different voices is perfect. However, when using TTS for ebooks or RSS feeds I'd rather the CereProc's Scottish voice. While it seems you can have more than one engine active whichever you select as the default (even with "always use my settings" turned off) seems to override whatever you select in other apps. This means if IVONA is set as default and I select CereProc in FBReader it'll use IVONA or not play at all. Vice versa with Anki.
Going through all the menu settings to switch between them is ridiculous for something that should be so simple - and how you would expect it to function. Is it possible to permanently associate a particular TTS engine with a particular app ignoring whatever is set to default? Or failing that - is it possible to create a shortcut I could have on the home-screen to quickly switch between the two instead of going through all the sub-menus?

I'm looking at building a game for Android and I've looked around for any sort of insight into how to approach it.I've run across a few game engines for the platform and I'm wondering if any of you have had experience in using them.I worry about spending a lot of time building an app that relies heavily on a game engine, that maybe is abandoned at some point or becomes incompatible with future versions of Android. However, some of the "out of the box" functionality appears to be nice to have.Just curious to hear if any of you have looked into this at all.

I've looked around for a physics engine that will play nicely with Android, but I've only been disappointed. In terms of performance, I had heard that jbox2d was the best bet, but (from my understanding) ever since Android SDK V1.0, the Dalvik VM's verifier has become very strict and rejects some of the key classes and refuses to run. This problem persists after using the dx tool (although I might be using the tool improperly). I know that the AndroidBox2D porting project exists to optimize jbox2d for the Android garbage collector, but the project page doesn't have any downloads and the gpl license isn't as attractive as the zlib license of the original. Does anyone have any tips for making jbox2d work in Eclipse, or have any recommendations for where I should start looking?

I want to try any physics engine for 2D and 3D in Android. So far I have learn that JBullet and JBox2d can be used, and JBox2d is a better one among them. But there in not much available documentation available and it even uses some concepts which are not supported by Android like Applets.Even some posts in various forums suggested that there are still no ideal physics engines available for Android. Are there any plans for implementing specific physics engines for Android? Can OpenGL be used for these ? Help me out in deciding which physics engine is best suitable for Android.

I am planning to develop a game for all of the mobile platform and have pretty much zeroed down on the concepts of the game. but the only issue I'm facing as of now is that I have no idea what would be the best libraries + 3d Engine to us to achieve the best results on the hardware on some of the upcoming mobiles. I'm talking about the iPhone 3GS, the new WinMo and Android devices with the famed Snapdragon, other processors from Samsung, ARM, Qualcomm and even Intel and AMD.as of now i plan to use the ogre libraries for now, but then what will offer portability?? This is much more of a design question rather than just coding. Any help is appreciated, others who wish to collaborate are very much welcome too. just drop me a mail.

Are there design guidelines to help decide if an application with multiple views should be designed with multiple activities or just one activity and control the back button itself.
I've tried both. My most complex applications using one activity per screen. However, now that I'm successfully written an app with just one activity and handling the back button myself, I don't see any compelling reason to use multiple activities. The one activity application is much simpler and more straightforward.
What advantages of multiple activities am I missing?

I'm planning to develop and app that presents the users with several different screens (of different information).
Was wondering what would be the best way to implement this?
Is it better to have separate XML layouts and an activity to display and allow the user to interact with each screen of data?
OR would handling all of these in the same activity be more efficient (and dynamically load / unload each layout)?

I have a motorola razr m, and am currently running a pdanet tether via USB to connect my pc to the internet.I have used airdroid before, when i had cable / wifi, but that's no longer an option for me.
Am I able to run both airdroid AND pdanet off the same tether to my pc? (pc has no bluetooth or wifi capabilities, so a hard line is my only option).I loved the features that airdroid gave me and would love to get them working again with my current setup.

I have set the android:multiprocess="true" in the AndroidManifest.xml of TargetSL I don't seem to see the multiple instances of TargetSL, which i am expecting ..
All i see is 2 process, where i was hoping to see an instance of TargetSL, for each launch that was invoked by the singleLauncher!

I'm using Go SMS as my default message app on my Droid 2. When I send a picture to more than one contact, everyone I sent it to gets any response any one does to the message. This is obviously not cool.
I can't find an option to turn that off, I'd never even heard of such a feature before. Not sure if that is an Android thing or just my app. I want to continue using this app but I'm not going to send a picture to umpteen different people 1 at a time.

I understand that widgets can use power; especially the ones that update (news, weather, etc.).
What I'm curious about is when you have launchers like Go Launcher and Launcher Pro Plus. If you have them both, what is happening to the widgets that are on the launcher you're not using (including the stock launcher). Are those widgets drawing power to update, even though you aren't seeing them? Should you delete all widgets, except for the launcher you're currently using?

What I would like to do is to run 2 instances of an application or more. The issue is that I am using an RDP program that allows me to attach to a single connection, the kick is that I need the ability to toggle between those machines and the app does not do that natively. I can also see it being useful for a situation when you need to toggle between two documents that are both open with the same application.
I know that it is really not made to do this natively but if there is are ROMs that include that functionality or a way to alter android to do this. In addition, it would be great to be able to tell the system which applications can and can't function that way.
I currently have a nexus 7, transformer prime and transformer infinity to test this with.

I was tinkering and editing an apk, and i managed to compile it and install it fine and it works and is suited to me. So i was wondering ( not too good with xmls ), is it possible to edit the manifest file to rename the apk so I can install multiple copies ( i.e. have the original unmodified one and the modified one at the same time ). I need this for testing purposes. Which lines do i need to edit exactly so the phone doesn't give me the "installing this application will replace the current..." warning, so I can multiple instances of it?
APKs are managed by package name, not by file name, but you can't simply change the package name in the manifest of a compiled APK.
Even assuming you manage to do it without messing up the file, which is not a simple task, there will still be code referring to the package name, so the app will crash.

When I use gmail (version 2.3.6), I can't send the same email to multiple contacts at the same time. I have no way to access my contacts (people) and choose more than one contact without having to keep adding one contact at a time. I want to be able to choose several contacts and add them at the same time. Gmail support said click on the gmail icon in the upper left hand corner, but there is none. What do I need to do?

I need to know if I will be able to sync the following: my personal Gmail: email + calendarmy corporate Exchange account: email + calendarmy boss' corporate Exchange account: calendar ONLY
I have proxy access into my boss' Exchange account, and need to be able to carry his calendar with me. Do NOT want the two Exchange calendars to be merged.
I know that I can keep my Gmail account separate from the corporate account, so that part's great. The complication is being able to sync the two separate Exchange calendars, and the fact that I have proxy access granted to my boss' account rather than the actual login.
In the past, the unwieldy solution was to have to manually duplicate every calendar entry from my boss' Exchange calendar in my own Exchange calendar. I'm hoping there's a way around having to do this... also, when my boss adds/deletes on his calendar I want to be able to have that info update for me, which obviously doesn't happen with my manual workaround.

I recently switched to a Galaxy S3 after owning an Iphone 3GS for a few years. For me, playing music is one of the most important aspects of a smart phone, and I have somewhat specific requirements. I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this:
1. I have a large library of ripped and carefully tagged MP3s on my home PC.
2. I want to add to this library and keep it synced with my phone.
3. I want my phone to be my primary music player. As such, I want to:
3a. Play a song in the car, via the phone
3b. Arrive at work, plug my phone into my PC via USB or connect over the WiFi, and continue to play the same song, sourced from the phone, but output to my PC headphones
What I DON'T want to do is:
- plug headphones directly into my phone while at work
- use the phone interface to choose/play/stop music while at work
That seems simple enough, but so far I haven't found any software that will cooperate.
- "Google Play Music" won't track what was playing on my phone and then update it when I'm on my PC, the two are totally independent. I'm also not ready to totally commit to the cloud, as I have bandwidth limitations and spotty data reception when I'm not at home or work.
- Kies won't properly sort the music on my phone when the phone is connected, nor does it provide an easy interface for viewing or playing music from the phone
- Windows Media Player refuses to sort the songs on my phone properly. It has problems identifying artists and will sort albums alphabetically instead of in proper track order. It's possible that there's some tagging difference between every other program I've used and WMP, and maybe I can rectify this by retagging all of my music to work better with WMP, but that seems like an enormous task and I'd like to avoid it if possible.

First noticed a problem when I got a warning message that I was running out of storage space on the phones memory. When I checked I found literally thousands of copies of the same photo in the S4PhoneDCIMCamera folder. I delete them all but the phone continues to make a copy approximately one every minute which I have to constantly delete to free up storage. what is making the copies? This may already exist somewhere but I am just unaware of it. I'm looking for a calendar app that will allow me to share schedules with my family on our respective devices. For example, if I add an event to a calendar this week, I want the event to appear on the calendar on each of my family members devices, and update any additional changes automatically.

is there any way one could sync multiple Outlook accounts to the same phone? I've tried to add multiple accounts that aren't Outlook, and I can't do it.
Or, what is a good work-around to try? Porting the accounts to Google calendars and sync them that way? It's for work, so I don't know if that would be the best option.

We have multiple Android devices in our home my Motorola Photon Q and my fiance's Samsung Galaxy S2. In addition to our Motorola Xoom. Recently my finace and I both noticed that when our phones are on WiFi instead of 3G/4G we can't get apps to download, we also noticed this happening on the Xoom which is really a problem since we don't have any mobile service on that. Nothing changed in our WiFi configuration between when it was working properly and now. And all devices did it at the same time. what may be affecting the devices to cause this to happen.
