General :: Syncing Music Across Multiple Platforms?

Jul 21, 2012

I recently switched to a Galaxy S3 after owning an Iphone 3GS for a few years. For me, playing music is one of the most important aspects of a smart phone, and I have somewhat specific requirements. I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this:

1. I have a large library of ripped and carefully tagged MP3s on my home PC.
2. I want to add to this library and keep it synced with my phone.
3. I want my phone to be my primary music player. As such, I want to:
3a. Play a song in the car, via the phone
3b. Arrive at work, plug my phone into my PC via USB or connect over the WiFi, and continue to play the same song, sourced from the phone, but output to my PC headphones

What I DON'T want to do is:

- plug headphones directly into my phone while at work
- use the phone interface to choose/play/stop music while at work

That seems simple enough, but so far I haven't found any software that will cooperate.

- "Google Play Music" won't track what was playing on my phone and then update it when I'm on my PC, the two are totally independent. I'm also not ready to totally commit to the cloud, as I have bandwidth limitations and spotty data reception when I'm not at home or work.

- Kies won't properly sort the music on my phone when the phone is connected, nor does it provide an easy interface for viewing or playing music from the phone

- Windows Media Player refuses to sort the songs on my phone properly. It has problems identifying artists and will sort albums alphabetically instead of in proper track order. It's possible that there's some tagging difference between every other program I've used and WMP, and maybe I can rectify this by retagging all of my music to work better with WMP, but that seems like an enormous task and I'd like to avoid it if possible.

General :: How To Test Multiple Android Platforms / Versions

May 15, 2012

I'm contemplating the idea of developing an application for the android. I have several years of experience developing web applications with Java and so figured it shouldn't be too hard to pickup a book and learn how to do it for the android platform. So far so good; that's why I love Java.

My question is in regards to how does the android development community go about testing their applications of the various android version and phones? I think I'm more concerned about the android version rather than the phones. I'm planning on getting the Sprint Evo 4G LTE coming out on Friday, so I'm obviously going to be able to develop and test for Android 4 and HTC Sense 4 (though I don't think that is as important right? Development is usually against the OS and not the UI manager, right?). But how would I go about testing against Gingerbread, Froyo, etc.? Do you guys keep a previous old phone (like my old HTC Evo 4G) and flash diferent roms in order to test the app against previous versions of android? Are there other solutions? If it's using an old phone, does this work off-network/service? I guess you could just dump the apk on the sd card and install as third party app and test it out. As long as the app doing require phone services or mobile data network (internet) you'd be fine if you have wifi access right?

Android :: Designing Service For Consumption On Multiple Mobile Platforms

Apr 27, 2010

I am building and designing a (mostly) read-only interface to some data. I'll be uing ASP.NET MVC to build a psudo-restful API. I'm wondering if anyone can provide some resources for building full-client applications for various mobile platforms, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, etc. I'm thinking that serving up XML data is going to be the most simple and universal, but parsing XML in objective-C for example doesn't sound like fun to me, but maybe there are some good libaries out there to help ease this task?

In other words, what formt will be the quickest to implement on the client side? Are there any JSON parsrs for iPhone or Android? I know there are .NET JSON parsers, but not sure about other platforms -- is ther another format that might better? Or should I stick with pure XML and deal with it on each platform differently?

Android :: Most Cost Effective Way To Target Multiple Mobile Platforms

Apr 26, 2010

I have been given the tasks of speccing a mobile application, which will need to run on approx. 1000 devices. These devices already exist, and consist of iPhones, BlackBerrys, Androids, Windows Mobile and Netbooks. The application will have simple reporting capability, and a collection of forms. Anyway, the obvious solution would be to develop some browser based solution, although given the occasionally connected nature of the devices, there's a potential for data to get lost / not saved.

So instead of creating a complex application for each platform, I was thinking we could build what is effectively a form generator, with basic offline storage capability (text files), designed to run on each device, and have the device generate a form, based on for example an XML file that it could request from a server somewhere, resulting in minimal specialist development costs, and the ability to run most of the logic from the server end, with the devices being dumb clients that render forms and upload the data when there is an available connection. Anyway, my question summarised is, how have you made the decision on supporting multiple devices for your application. Is this always an unavoidable problem, and you just have to make the call to support 1 or 2, or pay for developers to write code for each platform, or alternatively supply pre-installed devices to the company?

I own a Droidx and a Asus transformer. I need an app that syncs my music from my droidx to my tablet wirelessly, because I download all my music off my phone and never have a computer involved. I use poweramp and really don't want to use another music player in order to do this. But if that's what I'm stuck with ill do it.

General :: Universal Music Syncing?

May 13, 2012

need a way to sync/listen to music to 2 Android devices and multiple PCs and trying to get the following functions:

1.) Ability to upload all songs to cloud
2.) Ability to listen to everything in the cloud or set some as "Offline" on mobile devices and laptops
3.) Ability to create playlists that stay synced( meaning if I add or remove a song on mobile it shows on desktop, all changes synced everywhere )
4.) Ability to rate songs from 1 - 5 ( much like iTunes, MediaMonkey, etc... )
5.) And this is the big one! The ability to create Smart Playlists like on iTunes based on Ratings that stay synced everywhere( Changing rating on mobile changes everywhere )

I think I've found all of the above in most services except 4 and 5. I cannot find a service that allows detailed ratings( 1 - 5, not Google Music's thumb up or down( how useless is that ) ) and also couldn't find smart playlist functionality anywhere.

I need ratings and smart playlists, and the only other option I can think of is moving my music to Dropbox, installing Media Monkey so it looks at Dropbox for ratings and smart playlists( or views, whatever they call it ). But this leaves me out of luck on mobile devices.

I'd like to use Google Music but it doesn't have the rating / playlist stuff, non of them do, well not smart playlists anyways.

General :: What App / Method Should Use For Syncing Music Across Many Devices

Dec 5, 2012

I just bought and Asus 300 tablet for house use. I mainly bought this for our 4 year old for learning apps and entertainment. I then realized that I have her music on a bunch of other devices so I figured that now would be a good time to get everything synced up with one another. I am mainly concerned about the music aspect of syncing and if an app(s)/method(s) included other things like pictures and videos I would not be opposed. The main devices I want to sync are as follows:

-2 galaxy s3
-2 older Android phones that will be used as media (music devices like an ipod) which are a Epic 4G and a Evo
-1 Asus Transformer 300
-2 computers running Vista and Windows 8

And maybe if it wasnt a problem an XP desktop, an XP laptop, and an Ipod nano.

how Apple is about sharing and I could just take most of my music to another system/use another method. I have looked into Amazons Cloud Player and have heard about some other Apps like Double Twist but I am still a little lost. I am basically looking for something that is more or less fully automated (or pretty close to it).

General :: Google Music App / Songs Showing Up Multiple Times?

Jun 25, 2012

In the Google Music app my songs are showing up 3 times, same when I try to set an alarm with a song. Only the last of the 3 of any song will play. I'm unsure what I need to clear to fix this. I wiped my cache's in CWM and rebooted but it didn't change anything. They were coming up the same in PlayerPro but I did a refresh tracks in app and it fixed it. App that are giving me problems are Google Music, N7 & the stock Samsung player. So I'm assuming it's not an app issue as it does it on different ones. I'm running the latest Perfection ICS rom.

General :: Sync Bookmarks Across Platforms And Browsers

Apr 5, 2012

I'm currently using Firefox 11 as my computer browser, MIUI (GB version) Stock browser on my EVO 3D phone, and ICS Browser+ on my Transformer Prime tablet, and i've come across a problem.

I can't seem to sync my bookmarks properly.

I've been able to easily sync calendar, contacts, etc with my gmail.com account and such, but I absolutely refuse to use Chrome as my browser just for the sync ability.

I'd like to be able to sync between all 3 devices if possible (If not possible, at least sync between Firefox 11 on my computer and ICS Browser+ on my tablet?)

HTC Droid Eris :: Android 2.1 / Syncing Contacts From Multiple Gmail Accounts?

May 21, 2010

On my Droid Eris (just updated to Android 2.1), I have taken advantage of 2.1 offering support for multiple Gmail accounts. So I have 3 Gmail Accounts in the Gmail app. My question pertains to how Android syncs the contact lists (which include many of the same contacts) from these 3 separate accounts. Will I end up with dozens of duplicate contacts? If so, is there a workaround? Also, is there an easier way to switch between different Gmail accounts? E.g., in the Gmail app, you have to go to Menu then Accounts, which is inefficient. The built-in mail app displays a list of accounts when you open it (an ideal approach), but I would prefer to not open my Gmail accounts in the default mail app.

HTC EVO 4G :: Syncing Music Absolute Nightmare

Jun 13, 2010

I got my Evo 4g and I'm absolutely in love with it, but getting music to show up in ANY music player without a flaw is an absolute nightmare. If I use Tunesync the music all gets onto the card, but the playlists don't appear. If I use Doubletwist, not only does the sync take millennia, the playlists do not show up and I get duplicate playlists. If I use Salling Media, I have the same problem I have with playlist, and I get an error about source files not being htere. After over 6 hours of googling and more than 5 sd card reformats, I'm abotu to give up. Have any users succeeded in getting all the playlists to show up with no duplicates and all of the songs they wanted? If so, how?

Media :: Syncing And Converting Music For HTC Hero?

Sep 5, 2010

I got my HTC Hero on three UK network a week ago and I love it!!! Anyway I have pretty much sorted it all out but have a slight problem when it comes to music. I currently have 5 gigs worth of songs I would like to transfer but only a 2 gig memory card. Using WMP11 I converted them to 64kbps and synced perfectly but then I realised that WMP had converted my mp3s to WMAs. For the first few minutes it would work fine on the hero but then it would suddenly stop and no more music would play. I also noticed that the temperature would usually jump from 27.1 to 44.2 while the music was playing. All in all my question is.... are there any free programs that will convert mp3s to lower bitrates which are still mp3 format and sync them to my HTC hero?

HTC Droid Eris :: Syncing Music From Laptop

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to get a subset of my music from my laptop onto my Eris. Can't use iTunes (obviously). iTunes Agent sets up just fine, but then when I hit the "sync" button, says "no connected devices" or words to that effect. (Even though it saw the Eris just fine when going through setup!) Doubletwist doesn't see all my playlists (and it DOES see playlists that were deleted). I have it syncing a couple of playlists, just to see how it goes. Salling Media Sync seemed like a great idea (it saw all the right playlists) but it crashes every time on the first song. And if I take that song out of the sync, it crashes on the "new" first song.
I've looked at MediaMonkey and TuneWiki and (for various reasons) didn't like them. I'd be fine with DoubleTwist if only it saw the real playlists... (and yes, I've searched the forums, apologies in advance if I missed the answer)

My request now is, what is the EASIEST program to sync music with? (Obviously, it needs to be Linux compatible) I've never been a music/mp3 listener so I'm not real fluent on the best methods for storing/playing music. Do you keep all your music in one folder on your phone or SD card? Do you organize it via folders? Do you use the stock music player app? If you all don't mind, give me ideas on the best music management and I'll get her setup and running smoothly so she'll never look back to iPods/Windows again!!

Media :: Software To Re-encode Music Whilst Syncing

Oct 8, 2010

I keep all my music on my PC in MP3 format at 320kbps. I prefer 192kbps on my phone as I'm not too concerned about quality on the move and I can fit more music on that way. I don't want to keep 2 versions of each album as I have loads and that's not really practical. At the moment I sync using WMP12 as it allows you to re-encode to a lower bitrate as it syncs but the only problem is that it re-encodes to WMA format. I don't really have a problem with that as it's only going on my phone but with Froyo there's a bug that means the phone can no longer read the artist tag of WMA files. Since Froyo has now been out for months and there's no word about the bug from Google it appears there's no chance of it getting fixed (a cunning ploy to stop people using WMA seems the most likely explanation I guess) So can anyone recommend a piece of software I can use for Windows that will re-encode to a lower MP3 bitrate as I sync? Does such a thing exist?
