General :: Can Android USB Interface Act As Boot Device?
Aug 22, 2010
Very often I find myself needing to reset or get around someone's Windows Password, the easiest way of course is with one of many available linux boot cd's that'll edit the windows system hive. However most of the time I'm not carrying this around, I have a USB stick that can be used but I noticed earlier that while my Nexus One was plugged into the USB port on boot it is detected by my bios.
So the question is - Can the android USB interface act as a boot device? If so I assume it'd need a different partition since it's already got an OS?
(Also while I have your attention: 1) Did they ever fix the +1 area code problems with contacts?, 2) Why don't half my contacts show up in Send MMS dialogue (and others)?, 3) How do I tell if I have an SLCD or AMOLED screen cos sometimes the screen looks really crappy (dithering or off colour banding) AND FINALLY 4) can you set notification sounds differently depending on time of day (ie; I don't want a new gmail alert to wake me up at 2am.

I would like to see a site where I can register and specify features for a phone and get notified thru email when a device comes to market with those specification. Is there any service already? I am looking for a phone which has the following features:-Android OS 2.1 - with the default google supplied interface(i choose this because , i believe google will try to make future updates in android available for all phones)

If I take the SIM out, the device will boot and give me access to contents, (obviously, phone is off).BUT if SIM is in, I cannot get past the pin input screen, and this is exactly what I want to do.
I want to be able to give the device to my son to i.e. read a pdf, but I do not want him to be making / answering calls on my SIM.
Sure, I can take it out, but do not want to if I do not have to. (I might lose it too!)
In other words, if no pin is entered, one must be able to use all but the phone on the device.
After all, the lock is for the SIM, not the device!

I had made changes in S/W as suggested in post : [URL] .....
The device I am working is also having wake up lag about 2 sec.It varies from 1.2sec,0.8sec,1.8sec..etc. I implemented the new wake log to prevent the phone from deep sleep as you have mentioned. Now the time required for wake up from deep sleep is reduced to 0.8s and its quite consistent. Although I have to yet check for battery consumption during deep sleep.
However I have found that now when the phone is reset the battery consumption is more during the power up of the phone. For Ex. from 36% before power up and 24% after powerup.
Checked with another device and its only taking 3% for boot up.

I have a Galaxy Nexus with the volume buttons spoilt (not functioning). It is rooted and running on AOKP's 4.4 rom. I accidentally installed the wrong kernel and while panicking, I wiped the data and davlik cache. Now, I am stuck in boot loop. Also, when I plug it into the computer, the phone is UNAUTHORIZED according to adb server.
Is there any way to authorize my phone without booting into the OS itself?
or
Is there a way to boot into bootloader/recovery without authorizing the phone and without using the physical buttons of the phone?

I have written a class which extends the Service class of android and would like to launch the service during device boot-up. From the service I would like to receive the intents such as boot completed and screen off and on. Currently I am using a BroadcastReceiver to get the boot completed intent and then on starting a service to receive screen on and off intents. But I would like to remove either the broadcast receiver or the service. Any inputs.

I need to use this for a Samsung Tablet.Usually if the device is switched-off and the USB cable is being connected the display will wake up for some seconds showing an animated battery.Instead I want to let it boot.I suspect this is close to the metal. Where do I have to make a modification?In the kernel, in the Android platform, or is this hidden in some proprietary code of the manufacturer?

My wife's vehicle has a USB port into which she can plug the USB cable for her iPhone and play here music through the car stereo. Is there a cable that will allow for this on my Android device. Specifically, I have the Bionic. I didn't think it would play media through the USB port, and I didn't think there is an HDMI to USB cable, but I wanted to check.

Is there a place where I could find open source examples of User Interfaces for android apps. Like a project containing custom buttons, isons, sound effect, a nice layout with multiple blank activities that serves as a skin for your app. Strangely I didn't find anything like this whereas there are plenty of themes.

I try to understand android boot sequence on my JB (under CM10). I found some docs and there should be specific partitions (boot, recovery, system, cache, data).
My understanding of the boot sequence is now:
A) normal boot:
1) Power ON ->
2) bootloader ->
3) boot-partition where i flashed the kernel aka boot.img ->
4a) system-partition with the OS (libs, UI, etc) where i unpacked over CWM my customROM.zip ->
4b) data-partition, where i unpacked google-apps.zip and installed all the apps ->
4c) cache-partition with user data
B) recovery boot (adb reboot recovery):
1) Power ON ->
2) bootloader ->
3) recovery-partition with CWM where i may unpack all the .zip stuff to proper partitions, or restore from sdcard, etc.
Is this correct? I wonder, because i didn't installed CWM into recovery-partition. It cames from install of CM10 (fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img), so it must be in boot-partition and not in recovery?
So, next confusion: i looked up to /proc/mtd and i don't see neither boot nor recovery partition here:
Quote:
# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 19000000 00040000 "system"
mtd1: 00600000 00040000 "appslog"
mtd2: 06580000 00040000 "cache"
mtd3: 1a400000 00040000 "userdata"
I did a backup with CWM and loocked the data. There aren't boot, and recovery backups:
Quote:
# ls -lha /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-10-04.18.49.55/
d---rwxr-x 2 system sdcard_r 4.0K Oct 4 18:56 .
d---rwxr-x 3 system sdcard_r 4.0K Oct 4 18:49 ..
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 1.6K Oct 4 18:54 .android_secure.vfat.dup
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 54.6M Oct 4 18:55 cache.yaffs2.img
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 360.2M Oct 4 18:53 data.yaffs2.img
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 212 Oct 4 18:56 nandroid.md5
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 214.6M Oct 4 18:51 system.yaffs2.img
#
So, i think i didn't understand the boot sequence and partition schema corectly.

I am trying to do some low level performance testing related to device processor cores through adb which I feel it is affected by Android background services and system stuff.
As I know that the Android boot sequence stages are as follow:
1.Execute Boot ROM code.
2.Execute the boot loader.
3.Load the Linux kernel.
4.Launch Zygote, which initializes the Dalvik VM.
5.System server which loads the Android system.
So my question is how can I interrupt this sequence to force it stop on stage 3 to load Linux kernel. This can implement my intermediary performance testings before loading again Android system.
Does Fastboot or Clockworkmod recovery can load my device to a kind of Linux kernel?

Instead of seeing the boring old Android logo or my service provider's logo, I'd love to see the standard text-based Linux boot screen that shows the status of all the hardware and configuration info as my phone boots. My current phone is an HTC EVO 3D running Cool ICS with Sense 3.6 and Revolutionary CWM.

In apps like Gmail and Franco's kernel updater, there is a new interface element that brings out a drawer on the left side on Phone DPI that on Tablet DPI is a split screen.
Is this something that has to be programmed into the app, or something that can be edited into older apps? Mainly I would like that interface in the stock Email application.

So I am new into the world of playing with phones. I come from the computer realm as an engineer for the past 10years or so. So far I have not tried to root or anything but I fully intend to give it a try in the very near future. Anyways the reason behind this post is I am interested in the possibility to dual boot my device. i.e. I want to keep the stock build of 2.1 with sense but I want to be able to still play around with a 2.1 or even 2.2 (hopefully) ROM without losing my stock setup. Is this even possible? I hear a lot of people also saying they switch between ROMs often. Can you do that without losing all of the data that you have loaded on the phone already? If that is the case then switching back and forth between stock and a new ROM takes out the need for the dual boot requirement.

I have been struggling to root my new tablet for 2 days now without success.
I also have apple devices and jailbreak them for years without any problem but today I am completly stucked.
I am unable to intall correctly the ADB Interface... It is impossible.
I tried to install, desinstall, reinstall many times the usb drivers. Restart the computer many times...
I tried the SDK android tool with installation of the USB driver package v7.
I still have an exclamation point on the device !!
When I try to install the drivers, it always tells me:
"An error occurs during the hardware installation A service installation section of the INF file is not valid".
I am under XP 32 bits SP3.

I've been going over the android sdk for the past year to find out if there is a way to change the network type(2g/3g/4g), in phones with root access.However I couldn't find any way to do this.Asking around,someone told me that I could do this using reflection,by calling a method on a phone instance.Looking through the source code,I did find a setPrefferedNetworkType(); method in the Phone Interface,inside the internal telephony package.Is there anyway I can use this to solve my problem.I can't seem to find a way to get an instance of a class that implements the interface.Or is there any other way to do it entirely?
