If I take the SIM out, the device will boot and give me access to contents, (obviously, phone is off).BUT if SIM is in, I cannot get past the pin input screen, and this is exactly what I want to do.
I want to be able to give the device to my son to i.e. read a pdf, but I do not want him to be making / answering calls on my SIM. Sure, I can take it out, but do not want to if I do not have to.

Phone: Alcatel Onetouch 991D
I extracted the system.img(ANDROID partition) following this guide on windows: Creating a ROM dump of your MT65x3 device (easily found by searching google, since I can't post links yet)
I then copied the system.img over to linux(ubuntu 12.10).
opened terminal and invoked the command below to see the type of image.
mkimage -l system.img
Code:
Image Type : Davinci UBL Boot Image
UBL magic : 00720019
Entry Point: 00730065[code]...
Code:
Bad magic
how to unpack this type of image or convert it to a raw image so then I can mount it?

Sure, I can take it out, but do not want to if I do not have to. (I might lose it too!)
In other words, if no pin is entered, one must be able to use all but the phone on the device.
After all, the lock is for the SIM, not the device!

Very often I find myself needing to reset or get around someone's Windows Password, the easiest way of course is with one of many available linux boot cd's that'll edit the windows system hive. However most of the time I'm not carrying this around, I have a USB stick that can be used but I noticed earlier that while my Nexus One was plugged into the USB port on boot it is detected by my bios.
So the question is - Can the android USB interface act as a boot device? If so I assume it'd need a different partition since it's already got an OS?
(Also while I have your attention: 1) Did they ever fix the +1 area code problems with contacts?, 2) Why don't half my contacts show up in Send MMS dialogue (and others)?, 3) How do I tell if I have an SLCD or AMOLED screen cos sometimes the screen looks really crappy (dithering or off colour banding) AND FINALLY 4) can you set notification sounds differently depending on time of day (ie; I don't want a new gmail alert to wake me up at 2am.

I had made changes in S/W as suggested in post : [URL] .....
The device I am working is also having wake up lag about 2 sec.It varies from 1.2sec,0.8sec,1.8sec..etc. I implemented the new wake log to prevent the phone from deep sleep as you have mentioned. Now the time required for wake up from deep sleep is reduced to 0.8s and its quite consistent. Although I have to yet check for battery consumption during deep sleep.
However I have found that now when the phone is reset the battery consumption is more during the power up of the phone. For Ex. from 36% before power up and 24% after powerup.
Checked with another device and its only taking 3% for boot up.

I have probably bricked my Huawei Vision by rewriting boot image.
However, I can connect* it to PC and it sees my phone as "Huawei Handset" (same with Windows and Linux). But Windows misses its drivers (non-bricked phone worked); Linux seems to work. No OS can connect to it using default (downloaded) ADB, nor Fastboot, nor SoftwareUpdateTool.
Its PCI ID is 12d1:c002.
How could I reflash it? I would prefer the ways without disassembling the phone.
How to boot the phone, so you can connect it to PC:
1. turn off my phone completely (vol up + power for 10 seconds - release power for a seconds and repeat it once again)
2. prepare USB cable, so you can connect it in few seconds
3. hold vol down + power and after ~1s, connect USB cable (still hold vol down)
4. when Huawei logo appears, release both buttons - your phone is connected now

I'm used with my Windows computers to make a genuine unstarted system image (Ghost, now Acronis)
When I have a new computer, I take out the main HDD and make an image or boot with an Acronis boot disk and make an genuine image, can I do something similar with Android devices?
Is EFS the system image or just the system files, restoring an EFS backup is enough to make a device bootable again without Root?
Windows PC suitable for this? ADB I guess...
Perhaps it's not possible because I haven't see any topic about making an genuine image before first start of an new device or restoring a factory image... Every time Root is involved.

I have a Galaxy Nexus with the volume buttons spoilt (not functioning). It is rooted and running on AOKP's 4.4 rom. I accidentally installed the wrong kernel and while panicking, I wiped the data and davlik cache. Now, I am stuck in boot loop. Also, when I plug it into the computer, the phone is UNAUTHORIZED according to adb server.
Is there any way to authorize my phone without booting into the OS itself?
or
Is there a way to boot into bootloader/recovery without authorizing the phone and without using the physical buttons of the phone?

Rockchip 3066 TV Box I am working with. The situation is thus:
I have a number of these boxes, 12 in my possession currently with more on the way
I have successfully rooted the boxes through ADB, none of the one click or other methods worked, but rooting through ADB did.
I have tried using rkdump but unfortunately it cannot find the update.img which I assume to mean it doesn't have one.
What I would like to do is setup a box exactly how I want and then image this off and copy the image to the others
As I mentioned, even though it's a Rockhip based chipset, there's no way I can identify to extract any kind of update.img from it. I have seen through other postings that some of the 3066 based boards no longer use the same cramfs file header/structure the previous 2xxx chipset used so this is probably why.
The big thing is, I just want to mirror the setup to other hardware of exactly the same pedigree. Here is the MTD/partition map:
Code:
1|root@android:/dev # cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00400000 00004000 "misc"[code]....
what the precise format of the copy to and from commands should be assuming this is the way to go about it?
There's a number of applications that ship on the box by default too I need to remove as root, and I'd like to automate everything, hence the idea of imaging as opposed to stepping through all the tasks manually.

I deleted /system folder on my nexian cosmic journey. And now my nexian is stuck...
I try to using fastboot mode to flash recovery image, but my device seems not detected. I already installed the android composite driver, but when i use "fastboot devices" command, it shows (?) So how the heck to get my nexian back to normal?..
Or perhaps, if i just be able to put back the /system folder to its place again, it would be more easy to recover it... But how access the root when phone is like that?

So I have looked around xda etc. Cant find a simple answer (hoping there is). So long story I am on a rooted Evo. I was trying to flash cm6 via rom manager. I kept getting error 7's. So I found the PC36IMG.zip followed the directions. I am now in bootloader. Tried (many times) to run nandroid. But it gives me the error while flashing boot image for all 3 backups.
