General :: Besides Clearing Media Storage Ways To Force Rescan
Oct 9, 2012
Besides clearing the media storage, what are the ways to force a rescan? My rescan service seems to have stopped and everything in the gallery is blank. I tried some third party rescan but all fail. GT-N7000

If I pragmatically store new media files on the SD card, the MediaStore does not know about them until I remove and reinsert the SD card. Is there a way to tell the MediaStore to rescan the SD card without first unmounting the SD card?

I've already been searching forums and google groups to find out how to force Media Scanner to rescan the sd-card for media files, but with no luck. So after 2 days of searching i decided to post a question here.
In my app i need to rename media files, change their extension, or to reveal them by changing back their extension, but the changes take effect only after i run Media Scanner from the dev-tools, or remount the image, or reboot the phone/emulator. I've tried using MediaScannerConnection, and it only works when revealing media files, but not refreshing the gallery / music player thumbnails which is the biggest problem in my app development right now.
I've also tried copying files and deleting the old ones, but that has no effect also. Does anyone have any experience with this?

So my app downloads images at the users' request from an online source. Through a button in the activity, the user can choose to hide or show the images in the gallery. This is easy enough, I just add or remove a .nomedia file as needed. However, I want to rescan media every time so that the change is instant, and requires no further user interaction.
After each image is downloaded, I am using the method at http://www.mail-archive.com/android-developers@googlegroups.com/msg24164.html to scan the specific image into the library. That works great for one image, but when the .nomedia file is added, I really need to be able to scan a whole directory.
I have considered calling the MediaScannerNotifier on each image in the directory, but that just seems clumsy and lazy.

There are several ways to terminate an app or to "clear cache". What are the differences between them?
Here are some I have been using without deeper understanding:
- Long press middle button and swiping out one app
- App manager: Clear cache, clear data, force stop
- Restart phone
- Use task manager app to kill app in question

I have a generic LY-F1 Allwinner tablet which was working fine until a week ago. Now, however, it won't boot past the glowing Android screen. I've left it for five or six hours with no progress, so I guess the ROM is corrupted. Is there any other way to fix this other than flashing a new ROM?
However, the main problem with this tablet is that it does not automatically enter mass storage mode when plugged into a laptop, so I have no way to rescue my content. I can see the drives in Windows (one for the internal SD, one for the SD slot) but they are not usable (they result in an 'insert media' message)
Is there a way to force mass storage mode so that I can remove my data in preparation to reflash it? I'm sure I read of a command line method to get into the internal SD card? Or was I imagining it?

Is there a way to force particular applications to use the built in 8GB of phone storage? For example, doubletwist automatically syncs to the SD card, ROM Manager saves backups to the SD Card, etc.I find that I have used basically none of my internal memory because nothing recognizes its there in the first place. Is there a custom ROM that allows this? I know it is supposed to be a feature of Froyo, but it seems kind of silly that it doesn't already work or that there wouldn't be a root method to make it work.

I have an app that accesses music and I had at least one user complain that some of his songs are on internal storage and that causes a force close. My question is do I have to do 2 calls for each song now or can I make a query that will look at both the internal and external memory?

Just recently flashed the newest Liquidsmooth custom rom on my Samsung galaxy s3 running sasktel carrier (sgh-i747m) and I noticed that the browser doesn't work and a lot of apps were missing. When I press browser it won't open and when I try to buy nova prime off the nova launcher it won't open either. What are some ways to install the play store app etc. And use the browser app? I've been having a lot of problems with custom rlms.

I've been using the stock music player to trim songs and then set them as my ringtone, however every time I mount my SD card the ringtone reverts back to stock and I have to reset it. Is there a way/app that can let me trim a song, store the trim on the phone (not SD card) and then use it as a ringtone?

I am developing an android app. I would like to know are there any tips/ways to optimize the app before posting it on Google play. Is it necessary for me to do this or the Android OS will take care of these? So far I've used simple tools like zip align, layout opt, 9 patch etc..
Also are there any tools I can test my app using automation like monkey testing.

I use myPlayer to stream BBC iplayer content, and it works brilliantly, but if i lock the phone the app closes, or if i switch to another app it also closes. this is annoying as i want to stream radio in the background. on my old symbian phone i could do this easily. The reason for this, as anyone with a HTC desire wil know, is the formatting is crap and on a large number of desires, doesnt work at all.

I'm in a situation where I have to share some resources (i.e. images) between several of my apps and I'd like to know if there's a standardized and convenient way to do this besides the system-wide Media Store. The reason I don't want to use the MediaStore is that the resources are rather low-level (e.g. icons) and thus the user wouldn't be interested in them cluttering the MediaStore.
As I see it there are three ways to share the resources:
1) Store them in the global MediaStore. 2) Put them on the SD card. 3) Implement a custom ContentProvider for this kind of shared resources.
I like how a custom ContentProvider would encapsulate the way the data is stored, but it seems to be a bit of unnecessary overhead to achieve this. Writing to the SD card is convenient, but rather low-level. Are there any other options suited for this problem?

I've found differences in the behaviour of notifications on different ROMs, notably in the stock Jellybean ROM for my i9100 a notification will:
1. Mute all other sounds
2. Play the notification sound
3. Unmute other sounds
Whereas when I have AOKP installed the sounds both play at once, as in no muting occurs and the sound is overlayed.

I've bought this chinese clone of the SIII, it's a MT6575. It's great except for the internal storage, which supposedly is 500MB but there seems to be an invisible SD storage which is 2GB. It's really confusing... When I go to Settings -> Storage there are 3 memories: "Internal Storage" (claims to be 4GB but it's fake, it's actually 500MB), "Phone Storage" (claims to be 16.5GB but it's probably 2GB), and finally my SD, "SD Card" (32GB).
The thing is, I'm having problems downloading big apps because apps go to "Internal Storage" which is 500MB only, and which files are stored in the "Phone Storage" (maybe internal & phone are actually the same?). However when I go to Settings -> Apps, on the "Downloaded" tab, the apps are in "Internal Storage" (500MB), and on the "On SD Card" tab, it shows that apps are in "Phone Storage" (the ones I moved to SD). This means my 32GB SD isn't being used by the system when I send apps to SD probably.
Also, my 32GB SD card is found in /mnt/sdcard2, and the /mnt/sdcard... I don't know which storage is that.
So basically all this is happening because I tried to Link2SD with my 32GB SD doing all the 2 partitions stuff and so, but Link2SD never detects the "secondary SD" which is the 32GB SD, as this fake SD card, "Phone Storage", is probably what the programs thinks to be the SD card.

I am becoming sick of the Incredible's stock player, mainly because of its poor shuffle mode. I have looked at apps like MixZing, Cubed, and DoubleTwist, but these all seem like they won't play music from both the sd card and internal phone storage like the stock player. Are there any players that will do this, and perhaps find album art like the others?
