View 2 RepliesI have a TomTom GPS that has a very out of date map. It will cost me $70 to update it, and for that amount of money, I might has well pony up the $30 more and get a brand new unit. But, after looking into the new Google Maps Navigation feature, I'm not sure I will need a stand alone GPS unit, once I take delivery of my D-X.What, if any, features would I lose by using my D-X as my primary nav device vs. a dedicated GPS like a TomTom or Garmin Nuvi? Has anyone else made this transition?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Droid and accordingly, have all of the stock Google Apps which come with Vanilla android. I work in the IT department at a University, though, and we're trying to decide on policy regarding the syncing of mobile phones and the level of support which we offer to customers. Android phones have been a burden because of manufacturer customization. We've had many issues with Galaxy users, motoblur users, and especially Sense users, specifically related to syncing properly with exchange servers.I've only just realized that the manufacturer customizations are not just skins, they replaced entire apps, such as the email app, with what seems to be inferior apps. Vanilla Android, with the stock email app seems to have no trouble syncing to the exchange server. On the other hand, the Sense app, for example, will not. Instead of recommending fixes for each manufacturer, we are recommending the use of Touchdown (which is 20 dollars and it bothers me to have to recommend one of the most expensive apps in the market).I know that the stock app has no issues with Exchange sync of calendars, contacts, and email. Is there any way, on a non-rooted HTC phone for example, to replace the sense app with the stock app?Worst of all is the fact that instead of finding a resolution to the issue, the school is recommending the iPhone, stating that it is "more compatible" with the school's server. I know this isn't true and hate sending business in Apple's direction, so I'd really like to help find a resolution to this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I publish an update to my app on the Android Market, will the app only "patch" (or only update changes to current application) or will it just replace the old application with the updated one?The reason is because for my app I need the user to retain some information (such as a database) on their phone that is gathered from the user on the app's first setup and not have to ask the user to repopulate this data on every update.
View 3 Replies View RelatedHello everyone. I recently got the MyTouch 3G so I'm a new Android user and I'm very happy to be one. Anywho, I was wondering about the Handcent application. My friend suggested it to me and I like its setup over the default Messaging app, so I wanted to delete it. But would deleting the default Messaging app also delete all the texts in general? Or would they carry over to the Handcent app and stay there even after deleting the Messaging app. I don't want to lose some of the texts that I already had.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've ordered a 16GB SD card to replace the 4GB SD card that T-Mobile supplied. Obviously, there are files already on the SD card, so what I intend to do is:
1) Connect the Desire to my PC and copy all the files to a temporary folder.
2) Disconnect the Desire.
3) Unmount the SD Card and turn the Desire off.
4) Remove the existing SD card.
5) Insert the new SD card.
6) Turn the Desire back on (not sure whether I need to mount the SD card again).
7) Connect the Desire to my PC.
8) Copy all the files from the temporary folder to the new SD card.
This makes sense, but I'm just concerned that it might mess up any applications before I've copied the files onto the new SD card. I don't have a card reader, so can't copy the files before inserting it.I've just read Upgrade sdcard howto - Android Forums and it seems to agree with my procedure.Does anybody have any other ideas? I don't want to break my lovely Desire.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy 14yo daughter worked a summer job during the school break and with her hard earned $$ she purchased her "baby"... a Samsung Moment SPH-M900. She is so proud she bought it with her own money & you couldn't pry it from her fingers. Well... to get onto my subject matter; three weeks later (and on her 14th birthday) she accidently dropped it and shattered the glass lens over the lcd touch screen. Imagine her disappointment! Surprisingly, everything on the phone still works. We've obtained a few repair quotes, but $100 to $120 is a bit out-of-budget for her and us (parents) at this time. However, I did order a replacement digitizer I found on line by OEM for $25 that comes with two tools for the job. I am an experienced modeler as well as electronic savy yet my daughter is very reluctant in allowing me to do surgery on her baby. Can anyone instruct me on this proceedure or direct me to a site with schematics and/or details of the repair to help ease her conscience?

I can say "next time I'm at Target, remind me to get laundry detergent" and bingo, the next time I go to my local Target a reminder pops up! You can make it more generic also by saying "next time I'm in Woodbury, remind me to pick up my wife's gift" and the next time I drive through Woodbury, another reminder. I also use it by saying things like, "in two weeks remind me to xx" or "on June 15th at 2pm remind me to xx".
View 13 Replies View RelatedMy 8 month old HTC Wildfire S is really acting up lately. Its been restarting on it's own, and in an endless loop of boot screens. Sometimes it boots up correctly, but it just restarts again and gets stuck there. The last time it managed to successfully boot, I notice the icon for the battery wouldn't budge no matter how long I charged it for. In addition, the battery has been getting burning hot when it's just sitting there and doing nothing.
I tried factory reset twice -- but the problem still persisted. The second time I didn't download any of my apps or open anything, and it still crashed.
I've ordered a new battery, but I really don't know if its even the problem. I had an iPhone for the longest time before this, so I'm not familiar with the Droid. And mine isn't rooted either. Was I right to order a new battery?
Does anyone know a guide/video for how to replace the Touchscreen (digitizer) on a Hero? Mine has stopped responding towards the bottom and does not have warranty.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying a run without sense to hopefully relieve a lot of the lag problems I've been having. I know I should root, but I don't want to while I'm still under warranty and I'd like to give it a try without to see if I would like it without sense. I have launcher pro installed with home switcher and that seems to have changed over fine(with one incident where my sense home came up). The problems I'm having are with the messaging and dialer apps. I've installed handcent and like it, but I still get the notifications for the sense messaging app, so now I get two every text messaged. Also I've installed Dialer one, but the green phone button still fires up the stock dialer. Is there any way to fully replace these parts without rooting? I also really want the calendar app back, is the launcher pro one similar enough? I like seeing the whole month and being able to scroll with just the widget.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've rooted my phone and used TitaniumBackup to remove the AT&T bloatware. I've also configured it for sideloading apps so I could load the SiriusXM app from their website. Of course - now I can't get the OTA update. I just get the error where it says it's downloading, restarts the phone, says it's installing then reboots the phone again and says the update failed.
Maybe the OTA update is trying to update one of the bloatware apps and that's why it's failing? Or would removing the Superuser app (unrooting) and Busybox be enough to get the update?
Either way - because I deleted the apps using TitaniumBackup I have no backup (I know, I'm an idiot). I thought I did a TB backup before removing the apps but I have no idea where to look to restore them. They aren't listed in the app list when I click on Backup/Restore.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm writing a JavaScript for an open source browser available for Android to replace the text in the body tag of the pages loaded into the browser with some different text. This should be worked in away that once a page get loaded into the browser, this JavaScript executes & the replacements take place & finally the page with replaced text is visible in the browser.
This is the replacing part of the code:
var textnodes, node, i;
textnodes = document.evaluate("//body//text()[not(ancestor::script) and not(ancestor::style)]",document,null,XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_SNAPSHOT_TYPE,null);
replace();
function replace() {
for (i = 0; i < textnodes.snapshotLength; i++) {
node = textnodes.snapshotItem(i);
text = node.data;
text = text.replace(/'/g, "'");
//The rest of the replacements node.data = text;
However document.evaluate seems to be not working. How to correct this code or any suggestions to do this replacing body text task in any other way?
