Android :: Replacing Sense Apps For Functionality
Jul 26, 2010
I have a Droid and accordingly, have all of the stock Google Apps which come with Vanilla android. I work in the IT department at a University, though, and we're trying to decide on policy regarding the syncing of mobile phones and the level of support which we offer to customers. Android phones have been a burden because of manufacturer customization. We've had many issues with Galaxy users, motoblur users, and especially Sense users, specifically related to syncing properly with exchange servers.I've only just realized that the manufacturer customizations are not just skins, they replaced entire apps, such as the email app, with what seems to be inferior apps. Vanilla Android, with the stock email app seems to have no trouble syncing to the exchange server. On the other hand, the Sense app, for example, will not. Instead of recommending fixes for each manufacturer, we are recommending the use of Touchdown (which is 20 dollars and it bothers me to have to recommend one of the most expensive apps in the market).I know that the stock app has no issues with Exchange sync of calendars, contacts, and email. Is there any way, on a non-rooted HTC phone for example, to replace the sense app with the stock app?Worst of all is the fact that instead of finding a resolution to the issue, the school is recommending the iPhone, stating that it is "more compatible" with the school's server. I know this isn't true and hate sending business in Apple's direction, so I'd really like to help find a resolution to this.

I'm trying a run without sense to hopefully relieve a lot of the lag problems I've been having. I know I should root, but I don't want to while I'm still under warranty and I'd like to give it a try without to see if I would like it without sense. I have launcher pro installed with home switcher and that seems to have changed over fine(with one incident where my sense home came up). The problems I'm having are with the messaging and dialer apps. I've installed handcent and like it, but I still get the notifications for the sense messaging app, so now I get two every text messaged. Also I've installed Dialer one, but the green phone button still fires up the stock dialer. Is there any way to fully replace these parts without rooting? I also really want the calendar app back, is the launcher pro one similar enough? I like seeing the whole month and being able to scroll with just the widget.

I know when I dumped my Incredible for an EVO, I couldn't just transfer my APPBrain apps to the EVO; I am replacing my current EVO for a new one tomorrow, and I am wondering if I have to find/download all my apps again, or I can just re-sync the new phone once I put AppBrain on it.

Google Now has replaced the basic "ToDo" list for me. I can say "next time I'm at Target, remind me to get laundry detergent" and bingo, the next time I go to my local Target a reminder pops up! You can make it more generic also by saying "next time I'm in Woodbury, remind me to pick up my wife's gift" and the next time I drive through Woodbury, another reminder. I also use it by saying things like, "in two weeks remind me to xx" or "on June 15th at 2pm remind me to xx".

Suppose I like another email app better than the one that is built in. How can I make it so the email icon on my home screen goes to that app instead of the factory email app? Or maybe there is a way to delete the factory icon and insert a new one in that area?

I am wondering what actually happens with all the apps and widgets that come with Sense UI. I assume none of them will work anymore once the Desire is rooted? Or will they stay and still be useable? Can you download them somewhere again from HTC for example and install on a rooted device?
I heard of custom Roms that will let you root the device and still use some HTC apps. Is that correct or is there no such thing?
Finally, a question that might be a bit of speculation currently. With HTC introducing the new www.htcsense.com website with features such as SMS backup for life, contact editing, app shop, etc.... some of the stuff like the SMS backup sound very interesting but now I am wondering if these features will be available for rooted devices. Anybody has any ideas about that?
Would be kind of unfair if rooted devices could not use this HTC service.

Greetings, after having heavily used the the phone for a week here are my Sense UI/HTC apps pet peeves on the Eris (probably not present in Moto Droid - if someone would confirm it would be great):time stamp missing if it's not today (e.g., SMS from yesterday or before don't show what *time* they were received or sent, same for info on when last mail was last sync yesterday ). The system keeps this info, why not display it? This is useful for me.No weekly calendar view - what were they thinking?? (The day view looks so cool - but not useful to me. However, I can just imagine what a nice job they would have done for a weekly view. This is more a wish list item, not a gripe It would be nice to have the screen blank time separately from the phone lock feature

I've been hovering on the "Let's see you UI" thread for the last day or so. Really liking the icons some of you guys are showing. But everyone seems to being using Better Cut or Dxtop or something other than the standard UI. My questions.
1. If I download the above apps, do I loose Sense?
2. If yes to above, is there a way to use these cool icons on the standard UI so I can keep Sense?

This is an issue I've been having. I can be in any of a number of apps, and when I hit 'home' or back out of it, 20% of the time I get the white HTC evo screen and then it will redraw as if i had rebooted.I'm currently backing up in anticipating of doing a factory reset to see if that helps, but would love to avoid the hassle if I can figure out whats causing this beforehand.

I have a TomTom GPS that has a very out of date map. It will cost me $70 to update it, and for that amount of money, I might has well pony up the $30 more and get a brand new unit. But, after looking into the new Google Maps Navigation feature, I'm not sure I will need a stand alone GPS unit, once I take delivery of my D-X.What, if any, features would I lose by using my D-X as my primary nav device vs. a dedicated GPS like a TomTom or Garmin Nuvi? Has anyone else made this transition?

With the NDK I can wrap a native library so I can call the methods from Java and package that library into my application.
Say I want to package a custom version of SQLite, is there any way to override the system library for SQLite, so I dont have to reimplement the SQLiteDatabase class?

If I publish an update to my app on the Android Market, will the app only "patch" (or only update changes to current application) or will it just replace the old application with the updated one?The reason is because for my app I need the user to retain some information (such as a database) on their phone that is gathered from the user on the app's first setup and not have to ask the user to repopulate this data on every update.

Hello everyone. I recently got the MyTouch 3G so I'm a new Android user and I'm very happy to be one. Anywho, I was wondering about the Handcent application. My friend suggested it to me and I like its setup over the default Messaging app, so I wanted to delete it. But would deleting the default Messaging app also delete all the texts in general? Or would they carry over to the Handcent app and stay there even after deleting the Messaging app. I don't want to lose some of the texts that I already had.

Like everyone who's updated to 2.1, I'm experiencin the same bugs with Facebook (i.e. all my FB contacts show up in my dialer and my txt msgs). Anyways, I was toolin around in Accounts & Sync under Settings. Right now, the accounts I have set up are Google, Weather, and Facebook for HTC Sense. When I click Add an Account, there's something called just "Facebook," in addition to the "Facebook for HTC Sense."I've always known there were two Facebook apps (or whatever you wanna call them) on my phone, cause when I want to share a pic I take, I can do it using either "Facebook" or "Facebook for HTC Sense." I always share the picture using "Facebook" because it allows me to post a comment as well.Anyways, getting back to Accounts & Sync, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how these two apps differ. Maybe if I choose to sync the "Facebook" account as opposed to "Facebook for HTC Sense," that could solve some of these issues we're all having? I have no idea, but I'm hesitant to do anything for fear of clogging up my phone's contact list with Facebook friends.

I'm getting more and more requests about being able to use an App to SD feature that must be part of Android 2.2, but I really have no experience with it. I also don't know where to find any documentation regarding how to make my apps compatible with this feature. People have told me my apps cannot be moved to the SD card. My mind is also telling me that this is a really bad idea for paid apps that don't have license protection of any kind. Has anyone had any experience with this, know of any documentation, or have any tips regarding what would stop an app from being compatible with this feature?

First, I'm new to Java and Android Development so I hope you're patient with me :)
My aim in my first app is to establish an ssh-connection to my linux machine running openssh and sending commands to it on the one hand and receiving stdout on the other hand.
Since there is an app for doing all the ssh that absolutely benefit to my needs, (connectbot) I thought it would be the best not reinventing the wheel and using connectbot for sending commands.
As I read there is a general mechanism in android to do so called intents. And I found that connectbot seems to offer such intents, but I don't feel able to use them at the moment and I'm not quite sure if it it works that way in general:
http://www.openintents.org/en/node/102
As I said I'm new to Java and android and only did a few hello world examples using these great xtensivearts video tutorials:
So its a bit hard for me to get started the right way. What do I want to do exactly?
Simply onpressbutton in my app -> sending a certain command in the background to the ssh-connected machine via connectbot or anything that can provide that.
In further development I would like to get data from the ssh-connected machine (stdout would be enough due to I could handle the output server-sided)
All this has to take place in the activity of my app. Even username and password should be configured via the settings of my app.
It simply should use the basic features of ssh via connectbot.
I would be really happy if you could help me getting started right with this issue. I know it sounds a bit hard for the first app but I really need ssh in my app cause it would greatly facilitate the server sided development.

My first smartphone was the first generation iPhone which I still use to this day. With the release of the EVO 4G and the coming release of the 4th generation iPhone, I am excited by the choices I have.
Let me explain: I love how the GPS works on my friends 3GS iPhone. I love the way you can find yourself on the map and the little dot moves along the street with you.
Questions:
1.) Does the EVO 4G have a function like that?
2.) The only Youtube videos I can find regarding the EVO 4G's GPS function are all related to driving. Can anyone link me to a video of a person using GPS while walking around?
3.) I would like your opinions regarding the EVO 4G's GPS functionality.
In closing: I will be honest here, if the GPS experience on the EVO 4G is not as sexy as on the iPhone, I probably will end up purchasing the iPhone. I will admit though, the EVO 4G sure is a powerhouse of a smart-phone.

The things that sometimes a brute force shake would be most helpful for and that I would pay money to have my phone do:
1. Shake to full brightness. When it's too bright to see the screen, it's a PITA to try to get the brightness turned up.
2. Shake to current phone call. Occasionally, I exit the phone app and it's frustrating not to be able to hop back over there quickly.
3. Shake to unlock. It's annoying to always be swiping when I just want to quickly check something on my phone. A quick shake would be much easier as an option.

Anyone know of any libs for Collections that are similar to iOS NSPredicate? The NSPredicate classes allow you to specify SQL-like filtering rules which can be applied to collections of object, other collections, etc., to retrieve filtered results.

how to achieve the "scroll past top" functionality that you see in some apps (like the HTC Sense email app for example) where when you scroll up to the top of the list and try to scroll up past that, it appears to pull down, and when you release it springs back up?

Can any version of Android support simultaneous connections on both a mobile network (e.g. 3G) and a WiFi network? Here's the requirement: I want to connect to a local Wifi network of sensors/devices that is not connected to the Internet, and be able to transmit data to an Internet-connected web server. Obviously quite easy to do on virtually any platform in Java, but it seems that Android does not allow multiple networks/radios to be active at a time. Big flaw, IMO. Should be a configurable option to allow that. With Froyo and mobile hot spot functionality, clearly it is *technically* possible to do, but I don't want to be the Wifi "host", but rather, a "connected client" to another Wifi network, and then do web requests over the 3G network.
