Android :: Releasing Updates To App / Is It Patching Or Replacing?
Oct 26, 2010
If I publish an update to my app on the Android Market, will the app only "patch" (or only update changes to current application) or will it just replace the old application with the updated one?The reason is because for my app I need the user to retain some information (such as a database) on their phone that is gathered from the user on the app's first setup and not have to ask the user to repopulate this data on every update.

I am looking at a usecase related to sharing of a phone number of a contact during a call. What I expect to happen is that the phone number is converted to synthesized voice and is spoken into the ongoing call. Is it possible to patch the synthesized voice in an ongoing call?

I understand that the system may kill the activity without calling onDestroy(). Say I have a MediaPlayer that runs even when it's not visible, I would be releasing the player in onDestroy() method. Now, if the system decides to kill the activity after calling onPause() and never called onDestroy(), what does it mean for my MediaPlayer? Is it ever released? This is bigger problem for Camera since I think it requires to be released for other activities to use it.

I will be releasing two applications soon, one for my company and one for me. Publishing app on my own is straightforward, but I'm not sure which account to use for the company. What practice do you use in your company?I only see one solution, creating a special google account like android@company.com shared by the company Android devs.

I am planning to release my app (which i have been pllanning to do so for quite a few time now, waiting for the expansion of google checkout to happen).I am from India and I am planning to release the application using my friends UK Bank account. Is this advisable? Are there any things that I should take care of?Also is there any chance of google expanding the google checkout or in introducing new payout options like paypal?I have been waiting for the support for quite sometime and I am very much depressed on the issue that google is still not expanding the services, ive sent numerous mails to them asking for atleast the estimated release date but in vain.
Its been nearly an yeaar since android is relmore than an year since android phones have been released and still there is such slow progress. iPhones allows developers from most of the countries to publish their apps and customers from any country can buy the same, i think they can even do it through itunes.I think this is going to hurt the progress and development of android big time. If apple can do it why not google? I have been expecting some response from google atleast on the estimated date, so that we can plan accordingly.

We have a paid app in the market place, we would like to release a demo of the paid app. I was hoping we could just recompile w/ the same package name, but apparently that does not work. I have tried manually changing package name etc, but it is a chore, and it seems that several things that automatically happen in eclipse cause more harm than good when renaming the package name. Which brings me to my next question. If having a new package name is the only way to accomplish this. Is there an easy way to fork the paid app, where keeping the changes synchronized is easier? Some kind of Source Control?

Sony Ericsson's Mini Display For Android Phones Looks Like An iPod Nano.It says it will available in Q4 this year.Possible motive for delaying the update? Probably not.But the 2.1 update will most likely come out in Q4 because in my opinion, why release an accessory for your phone that won't even work >.>But this seems kinda pointless unless your phone is on silent or is in a backpack/purse where you can't hear it.

I ran across this great forum post over at xda developers forum, and they are encouraging us to send HTC emails to tell them to release the firmware update for the phone to fix the 30FPS cap which would be great because then there would be nothing holding developers back from making great apps for the phone, and the phone itself will run better too... According to the last update on the OP's post from June 14th, the update is coming but let's continue to write into HTC so they'll send it out asap!Source: Evo capping all graphics to 30FPS:The reason why graphics performance sucks right now - xda-developers

I just wrote a little game for droid. I was thinking I would put some put some adds in it and release it for free and maybe I'd make a buck or two.I'm wondering what I need to do before I sign up for this.First, I live in Canada. I assume there might be some sort of problem getting paid from the US?I do not have a company. Can I just make up a name to use for now, and if I start making money then I can register the company name and get a business licence later? (Claiming any profits as personal income on my taxes until I do, of course.)

I have a TomTom GPS that has a very out of date map. It will cost me $70 to update it, and for that amount of money, I might has well pony up the $30 more and get a brand new unit. But, after looking into the new Google Maps Navigation feature, I'm not sure I will need a stand alone GPS unit, once I take delivery of my D-X.What, if any, features would I lose by using my D-X as my primary nav device vs. a dedicated GPS like a TomTom or Garmin Nuvi? Has anyone else made this transition?

With the NDK I can wrap a native library so I can call the methods from Java and package that library into my application.
Say I want to package a custom version of SQLite, is there any way to override the system library for SQLite, so I dont have to reimplement the SQLiteDatabase class?

I have a Droid and accordingly, have all of the stock Google Apps which come with Vanilla android. I work in the IT department at a University, though, and we're trying to decide on policy regarding the syncing of mobile phones and the level of support which we offer to customers. Android phones have been a burden because of manufacturer customization. We've had many issues with Galaxy users, motoblur users, and especially Sense users, specifically related to syncing properly with exchange servers.I've only just realized that the manufacturer customizations are not just skins, they replaced entire apps, such as the email app, with what seems to be inferior apps. Vanilla Android, with the stock email app seems to have no trouble syncing to the exchange server. On the other hand, the Sense app, for example, will not. Instead of recommending fixes for each manufacturer, we are recommending the use of Touchdown (which is 20 dollars and it bothers me to have to recommend one of the most expensive apps in the market).I know that the stock app has no issues with Exchange sync of calendars, contacts, and email. Is there any way, on a non-rooted HTC phone for example, to replace the sense app with the stock app?Worst of all is the fact that instead of finding a resolution to the issue, the school is recommending the iPhone, stating that it is "more compatible" with the school's server. I know this isn't true and hate sending business in Apple's direction, so I'd really like to help find a resolution to this.

Hello everyone. I recently got the MyTouch 3G so I'm a new Android user and I'm very happy to be one. Anywho, I was wondering about the Handcent application. My friend suggested it to me and I like its setup over the default Messaging app, so I wanted to delete it. But would deleting the default Messaging app also delete all the texts in general? Or would they carry over to the Handcent app and stay there even after deleting the Messaging app. I don't want to lose some of the texts that I already had.

I've ordered a 16GB SD card to replace the 4GB SD card that T-Mobile supplied. Obviously, there are files already on the SD card, so what I intend to do is:
1) Connect the Desire to my PC and copy all the files to a temporary folder.
2) Disconnect the Desire.
3) Unmount the SD Card and turn the Desire off.
4) Remove the existing SD card.
5) Insert the new SD card.
6) Turn the Desire back on (not sure whether I need to mount the SD card again).
7) Connect the Desire to my PC.
8) Copy all the files from the temporary folder to the new SD card.
This makes sense, but I'm just concerned that it might mess up any applications before I've copied the files onto the new SD card. I don't have a card reader, so can't copy the files before inserting it.I've just read Upgrade sdcard howto - Android Forums and it seems to agree with my procedure.Does anybody have any other ideas? I don't want to break my lovely Desire.

I think at this point the cheapest option would be for me to buy a replacement digitizer ($65) and try and do the replacement myself. Does anyone know how to do this? Or know of a youtube link or website that has step by step instructions for replacing the digitizer?

My 14yo daughter worked a summer job during the school break and with her hard earned $$ she purchased her "baby"... a Samsung Moment SPH-M900. She is so proud she bought it with her own money & you couldn't pry it from her fingers. Well... to get onto my subject matter; three weeks later (and on her 14th birthday) she accidently dropped it and shattered the glass lens over the lcd touch screen. Imagine her disappointment! Surprisingly, everything on the phone still works. We've obtained a few repair quotes, but $100 to $120 is a bit out-of-budget for her and us (parents) at this time. However, I did order a replacement digitizer I found on line by OEM for $25 that comes with two tools for the job. I am an experienced modeler as well as electronic savy yet my daughter is very reluctant in allowing me to do surgery on her baby. Can anyone instruct me on this proceedure or direct me to a site with schematics and/or details of the repair to help ease her conscience?

Google Now has replaced the basic "ToDo" list for me. I can say "next time I'm at Target, remind me to get laundry detergent" and bingo, the next time I go to my local Target a reminder pops up! You can make it more generic also by saying "next time I'm in Woodbury, remind me to pick up my wife's gift" and the next time I drive through Woodbury, another reminder. I also use it by saying things like, "in two weeks remind me to xx" or "on June 15th at 2pm remind me to xx".

My 8 month old HTC Wildfire S is really acting up lately. Its been restarting on it's own, and in an endless loop of boot screens. Sometimes it boots up correctly, but it just restarts again and gets stuck there. The last time it managed to successfully boot, I notice the icon for the battery wouldn't budge no matter how long I charged it for. In addition, the battery has been getting burning hot when it's just sitting there and doing nothing.
I tried factory reset twice -- but the problem still persisted. The second time I didn't download any of my apps or open anything, and it still crashed.
I've ordered a new battery, but I really don't know if its even the problem. I had an iPhone for the longest time before this, so I'm not familiar with the Droid. And mine isn't rooted either. Was I right to order a new battery?
