Android :: IPhone Users Who Switched To Android
Jan 8, 2010
My current cell phone contract will expire in February, and I am weighting between getting an iPhone and an Android phone in the U.S. I am looking for opinions and experiences of previous iPhone users who have switched over to Android.
1. Why did you switch?
2. Are you glad that you switched, or do you regret it?
3. What are the advantages of iPhone over Android?
4. What are the advantages of Android over iPhone?
5. How would you recommend an iPhone vs. an Android phone to other people?

i last week took a HTC hero out on contract and switched from my iphone 3g, which i loved dearly reason being i wanted to use spotify to its full potential without having to shutdown etc.It's definately the best decision i ever took, i absolutely love the android platform and would recomend anyone else thinking of doing the same. A few question thought i have about the Hero;
1) battery life, seems pretty short? can i buy a better battery without having ot change the back cover? I like the idea of being able to carry a spare?
2)When on the internet/browser it always opens pages zoomed in, i find it pretty hard to use compared to the iphone, can i set it so that it open the page like a normal pc/iphone?
3)And how do i know i'm getting a 3g signal ?
4)Upgrade for Android? How do i get them? I read there is a better version but how do i upgrade it?

When a group message is sent between my co-workers, who are all iphone users, and myself (Note 3), one person in the exchange does not receive the text. This is not the common iMessage issue that was plaguing me when I made the switch from Apple to Android. This is specifically affecting one iphone user. When I send her a text individually it is not a problem. The other iPhone users don't have a problem receiving or sending to me.

So I recently switched from an iphone 4s to a Droid Maxx. Soon after switching over I learned that I was not receiving any texts messages from iphone users. After calling apple and removing my imessage certificate I started receiving INDIVIDUAL text messages from iphone users; however, when I am in a group message with other iphone users it continues to try and send messages to me as imessages. My friends have tried deleting my contact info on their phone along with all text message threads with me in it, but nothing has worked so far.

Yes, unfortunately I have friends with iPhones. With iOS4, they can basically do a group text chat that has all the users receiving the messages from everyone in one location and all messages are saved. This is basically like a chat group using text messages. My question is whether android has any apps that can allow us to "join" these chats. I asked my friend to add me as a user to the chat but all that accomplishes is letting me get individual messages from each member of the chat. If I wanted to reply to the group, I would have to reply to each one individually.

I'm a long-time PalmOS user and my current phone (Centro/Sprint) is still working, so I'm on the fence about whether to buy a Moment now and suffer the migration hassle, or wait until my existing phone really dies. If you made the switch, are you glad you did? Were the additional features of the Moment and Android 1.5 worth its limitations in other areas?

Do you think that was the method to their madness behind this Samsung galaxy s device? Thinking that they would make something as close to the iPhone as possible for Android? Clearly it was no accident.
- same app screen
- slides app screen the same
- same looking app icons on app screen
- same green phone icon
- same bottom row dock space for 4 apps
- same phone design and size (galaxy being slightly taller)
- etc. (If I missed anything)

I gave away my new number to everyone...only to find that all of my iPhone friends cannot send texts to me. They get this error:
"1443xxxxxx Error invalid number. please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number or valid short code.
It looks like I'm not the only one with this problem either:

Once we call the startService() method, can we keep the service alive until its explicitly stopped by the user? I want my service to stay alive until the phone is switched off. How can i do this? The idea is that when I receive an incoming call, I want to start recording and once the status changes to idle, I want to stop the recording. I am doing this inside my service. It does work sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. How can I implement such a thing in a service? Can someone help me with this?

So after reinstalling chompsms twice, the timestamp out of order doesn't disappear so I'm using Handcent in the meantime.
Handcent is good but I don't like how when you're adding a contact in "To" field, the number shows. Is there any way I can enable the contact NAME to show up in the To: field?
I'm on Android 2.1

As usual in android, each time the screen is flipped to portrait/landscape mode an Activity runs through life-cycle from onSaveInstanceState to onDestroy and then is recreated. In my Activity there's a ButtonText which can be changed by the user. It's reseted to the initial state, but I have to save the last state somehow. How can I achieve that, will I have to override onSaveInstanceState? Can someone show an example?

I'm just getting started with mobile development, and after considerable searching I'm still confused about sending a message from my iPhone to another or an Android. For instance, in building a simple Tic-Tac-Toe game, if I want to notify the other phone of a move, what is the best way to do so? Wifi, bluetooth, 3G? And how? Many methods seem to point to communicating through a web server, but I'd rather send them directly from phone to phone if possible.

My HTC Hero uses about 1 Mb per day, while no applications seem to require data. Automatically popping mail has been disabled, and also other data consuming apps aren't running. I switched off cell (3G) so it consumes the data via WiFi. If I switch on 3G, it would also consume via 3G. So, by not using any apps, the Hero seems to consume 1 Mb per day. How come?

Switched from ATT now cant get sms reminders from gCal
This is crazy - Google (and by default Moto) and Verizon should have worked out a clean way to get phones switched over.
Since I keep the same number (as I expect most people do), and since I have not gotten any gCal sms reminders, I went into gCal >settings> mobile> and re-entered my phone number in order to activate the send verification code button, and got this msg Phone notifications disabled.
Anyone have any ideas? There must/should be an easy solution.

It's just that all my other Sony phones, the alarm worked (and calendar reminder) when the phone was switched off, to wake me up ect. Is there a way to activate this so that it will work, or does the phone have to be switched on to use this facility?

I just received a replacement Droid X from Verizon.
Ever since I activated, I keep getting an error/warning message in my notification bar called "Motorola Service Account Error" saying:
"The account you are using is associated with another device. Please contact customer service to reset the device."
When I clear the notification, it always comes back a while later. I never had another phone with Blur on it, but this sounds like the whole Motorola account thing they would make you sign up for to use the phone. But that makes no sense because we don't have to do that for the X.
Can anyone figure this one out, specifically why it's there and how to make it stop?? I think when I check for any OTA system updates is when I am getting the message to come up the most. The update check fails every time with "Check for update was not available at this time. Try again later." Then, the Motorola warning shows up in the notifications again.
Also, every time I try to do *228 to try to update roaming, it plays the music for a bit but always says "I am sorry, your activation cannot be completed at this time" and tells me a phone number to call.

I posted this in another section, but it may be more appropriate here. I'm really new to the Droid. Just getting started.Today, I got a case for it, when I got home I took it out of the case and the dialer, launcher and contact icons, which were along the bottom, were suddenly instead down the right side. Plus, in the apps tray, I had 4 apps across, but now there are seven apps across.
