Android :: App - Animated GIFs Via Webpages
Apr 19, 2010
We are doing some prototyping for an Android app and we wanted to use Animated GIFs via webpages to get a sense of animation. Unfortunately, we have found that we can't do that on the Android's browser (or Opera for that matter). I've read some posting saying that this might get fixed but there were never any specific dates. Does anyone have some news on when we might be able to use Animated GIFs in webpages? If not, does anyone have any suggestions on good ways to develop quick animated visual prototypes of apps for Android? In particular, our design folks (who are handling the visual stuff) know HTML, Javascript, J-query but don't know Java and we would prefer to NOT have them learn another language, if possible as this is really just for rapid prototyping.

Animated GIF images rendered by Android's WebView do not seem to animate. Has anyone figured out how to make them work? I'm testing on an N1 with 2.1-u1. None of the web settings available seem applicable.

I have several animated gif's I had converted over to png's with Fireworks 8 but when I place the frames in the folders part0 & part1 then use the developer SDK software and upload the bootanimation.zip files they will not work. I have other bootanimation.zip that work but I can't figure out what the difference is.

I've looked around but I can't find anything on it. I just moved some animated pics to my photo folder on my Behold II and when I view them in the photo gallery it's just stuck on the first frame and stays that way like a regular picture. Is it possible to have animated gifs "move" on this phone or is it not supported?

I have an app that downloads several gifs and then needs to overlay them (not all centered at the same point), honoring the transparency of the images. I am currently planning to subclass ImageView. What is an efficient way to do the overlay/merge?

I got my girlfriend the HTC Desire, and myself the HTC Legend.I love the phones, but when i use the internet my phone goes to a crappy "mobile" version of a website, while if i type the same URL into my girlfriend's Desire it loads the full page.I have looked at the recommended threads and the only relevant one doesn't have a solution, it only said to download the Dolphin browser, which i did, and i like but the problem is not resolved.I got this new phone because my old Nokia N96 (N-Ninety-Sux) had crappy internet too.

The browser will only load a fraction of the webpages. Scrolling down to the bottom of where the browser assumes is the bottom of the webpage only reveals maybe one half of the full webpage and a refresh or a switch to Dolphin Browser or a 'pinch to fit' only reaffirms that the browser is only registering a portion of certain pages.

I am familiar with Froyo 2.2 and the ability to set certain apps as "default" apps for certain functions, however, I am having a problem (or perhaps that is just the way it is???) with choosing a default browser. I am also familiar with clearing the default choices in the Application Manager.
So, in an email or through another app, I click on a link and get a popup to use either the default "Internet" browser or the "Dolphin" app that I have installed. I CHECK the checkbox to "use this as default" and then go off to my link.
Then say I go to another email with another link, I get the SAME POPUP to choose between the default browser or Dolphin.
I have done some research and tried, from within Dolphin itself, to set Dolphin as THE DEFAULT browser, however choosing that setting within Dolphin does NOT work either! I still get the popup whenever I follow a link.
QUESTION: is there a way to set my default browser choice for ALL MY WEBS LINKS?? It appears that whenever I click on a previously un-visited link in an email or an app, I get the popup asking me what browser to use.
I would like to set Dolphin to launch for ANY AND ALL LINKS I might click on in any app on my phone....is that possible?

Why do GIFs literally flash in a blink of an eye? They are shown properly on the list folder, but when you press play their over in less than 1/2 a second.

So I got my Captivate this weekend, and have been using it on my WiFi at the apartment and everything is working fine. But today I went to work, and now any webpage I try to access just shows up as a blank white page with the words "Access Forbidden". Other apps work just fine, I just can't visit any webpages. I'm definitely connected to 3G, with a strong signal strength. I read in one thread that clearing APN proxy settings solved this problem for them, but I can't find any way to edit the APN settings on my phone (can only view them). I read another thread that this happens to people who switch over from an IPhone; only problem is, I've never owned an IPhone. I'm contemplating giving AT&T customer support a call, but wanted to check here first to see if anyone else is having this problem/has a fix. Here are my APN settings in case this clears anything up:
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: None
APN type: internet + mms
These are the default phone settings and it won't let me change any of them, although it will let me create a new APN and edit the settings of that. It seems odd that the default APN is Cingular...that is the service I had years ago, but it merged with AT&T a while back.

When I try to load certain webpages my browser will crash as soon as it loads 100%. An example gizmodo.com, it only happens with the full version of the site not the mobile version. It appears to be javascript related, because when I disable javascript the page will load without crashing. This happens both in the standard browser and in DolphinHD. Also, sometimes before crashing DolphinHD will show a page saying: "The Web page at file:///android_asset/webkit could not be loaded as: The requested file was not found. webkit/"

I'm just being stupid and overlooking a simple setting, but I'm pretty sure on my old HTC Hero there was an option in the settings to always load web pages in either mobile form, or the full web page (classic). Is this something that I can do in the settings on the Nexus one, because I do find it a little annoying having to regularly reload pages in "classic" view?

My work is setting up a secure webpage and we are expected to be able to access it 24/7 to log alerts received when there are server errors at work. To access this secure webpage we were given two certificates, one for windows (home use) and one for mobile ( a .p12 file which I've read is compatible). I cannot access the webpage via Android browser or chrome browser (or any other 3rd party browser). I've imported the certificate using the import feature in Settings->Security and it showed a brief notification that the import was successful. However, the certificate isn't listed in the "User" section of the trusted credentials list. Now, I would suspect that the certificate wasn't made correctly, but the same exact one works on a co-workers iPhone (pains me to say that). I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, rooted, but otherwise stock.

I'm had a really strange bug/problem in Android for months and I still haven't been able to find the roou cause of it in order to fix it. For some reason the browser is not rendering correctly webpages - the fonts are extremely small and the page is off centered. This is happening only while on 3G/Edge connection - if using WiFi this issue doesn't occur.
This happens with every single browser: Stock Browser, Firefox, Chrome, Dolphin, etc.
I thought this was a ROM specific issue, but I have tried flashing more than 3 ROMs now (every time I've flashed i've done a wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and wipe data/factory reset) with no luck. I also tried formatting the internal SD.
