Someone from WMWifiRouter had mentioned a couple months ago they were working on a product for Android but I haven't heard anymore. I was hoping they'd drop their product when paid apps went live. Any news? Any other Wifi tethering out there that doesn't require me to root my phone?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been contemplating rooting my Evo for some time for the reasons mentioned in the title. I have read rave reviews for WiFi tethering all over this forum and will definitely take advantage of it. Secondly, I have heard that when the Evo is rooted you can create back up, with Nandroid or Titanium, and it is a ghost/clone of the entire phone (settings, apps, app data/pointers, etc.). I have had to replace my phone a few times now for factory defects and it has caused tremendous pain to lose some of the app data that I had stockpiled in the 3 months since my last replacement. In the event of having to replace my phone again after rooting it, would I just have to root the new Evo and flash the last back up and ROM (stock or not) that I was using?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is for all of you who are having troubles getting your application "Wireless Tether for Root Users" to work. I personally kept getting an error on which would say "Initializing WiFi Interface: Failed." I have since been able to get it to work. Here's how.
Disclaimer: Obviously you need a rooted phone for this to work, We're in Root forums for a reason. You will also need the Amon Recovery Partition.
Steps:
1. Boot phone into Recovery by holding Volume Up + Power (End Button).
2. Wipe phone of all data.
3. Flash to the 0_3 rom, install Astro File Manager from the Market
4. Download and install file from below and place into phones SD card.
5. Install from Astro by opening it in App Manger, Open up application and enjoy!

I am new to the whole android OS and looking to join in very soon. The feature I am mostly interested in is WiFi tethering. I would like you guys to suggest to me the cheapest handset that I can accomplish such a feature with? Whether the phone comes with the application to do it or it can be done via alternate methods [root].

I don't need to do anything fancy with my phone but Wifi tethering sounds like it would be worth taking the plunge. I have been following the bugs and fixes thread about the 2.1 leak and the only think that initially kept me from installing the leak was everyone saying that the phone would randomly go completely silent. Does this also happen with the newest root ROM? Also, just to make sure I know what exactly what WiFi tethering is, will I be able to tether my WiFi if I get rooted and set up WiFi tethering?

View 3 Replies View RelatedDownload a terminal client, e.g. ConnectBot and connect to your local shell.Enter `su` to become root. (Double check with whoami afterwards). Enable wifi tethering and ensure your data connection is working (connect to VPN)
Run `netcfg` and note your interface names (typically tun0 and wlan0 (ignore m.wlan0 or similar, only take the one with a real mac address), as is on my SGSII)..Double check the subnet for your wlan0 device and enter the following commands:
iptables -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.43.0/24 -j MASQUERADE -t nat
(setup a postrouting entry for the tethered devices subnet, implementing NAT)
iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -i wlan0 -o tun0
forward packets from tethered devices across the tunnel
iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -i tun0 -o wlan0
forward packets from the tunnel to the tethered devices
Note, because you are using NAT, you will need to configure port forwards on your Android device to be able to run servers etc on tethered devices. Unlikely you'll need to worry about that though. Feedback if it worked or not. Posting this now from my home IP, OpenVPN for Android and these iptable rules!
I have PIPO M8 3G tablet running on Android 4.1.1, the problem is that Tethering and Portable hotspot are missing from the menu.

I want to host an INFRASTRUCTURE (not AD-HOC), otherwise known as a SoftAP (Access point) on wifi. This is possible with many applications, but they all want to use a mobile data connection. Is there any application that allows you to host a SoftAP WITHOUT a 2G/3G/4G connection? This is just for playing over WIFI between a samsung galaxy s3 and an older android 2.1 tablet. These cannot see AdHoc networks.
Anyways, I'm interested in any application that allows hosting of an infrastructure WiFi network without tethering to just host a wireless lan point.
I signed for for a tethering plan with my carrier that included a 1 GB cap on USB Tethering. I was wondering if WiFi tethering would go against this cap or would it look like I'm using regular internet on my phone. I have (real) unlimited 3G with my plan and I am using Wireless Tether from Google code.

I'm almost in disbelief that something as simple as a screenshot app isn't available (or built-in!) for an unrooted phone. It just seems like such a normal thing to do.Is it possible that in the future an unrooted phone can have an app to do this, or is there something about Android itself that doesn't allow it?
