Android :: Way To Have Group Contacts / Text Message

Alright so I REALLY need to create a group contact folder. You see I have to manage about 10 guys and its convenient that they all have cellphones whats NOT convenient is I can't find a way to put them into a group and text them with one group message! I need to make sure these guys show up to where they are needed and texting all 10 of them separately is a pain in the rear end. So far the other threads don't seam of any use.

I have come across a compelling problem with my Orange bill since getting my Desire. I set up a group in contacts and a number of times have attempted to send a group text. There are about 8 people in that group but when I pressed send I would get message pending.
Some members of the group would not receive anything whilst others would get a text hours later.
I tried a couple of more times last month then gave up.
This week my bill came with a 10 charge for photo messages, as if I would use this crap way of sending pics when I have access to email. All the group messages were charged at 25p per person.
To give Orange their due, they will reimburse me the money on goodwill but I certainly won't be trying the group thing again.

I have noticed in the text message app if I create a new message and click the icon button next to enter recipient to choose a contact from my contacts there are contacts from just about everyone who has emailed me on my gmail account! This is not ideal at all.. I Would like just the contacts in my phone to be available. How do I remove all of those gmail contacts.

I can't figure out how to add someone from my contacts to a text message without putting in the number. When I type in a name it only brings one name up and will not show the rest...example I type in Bethany and it will only show Bernita. What gives?

Is there a hack to allow more then 10 contacts in a txt message. I have a group that i need to send messages to every so often and it has 77 ppl in it and doing it 10 at a time is annoying. I know my BB was unllimited. I saw a hack for the windows Op sys. by going into the regedit. how about on the droid system?

As I am a new user I do have a question. When I try to compose a text message in the Messaging app my contacts do not show up whether I search by phone number or by name. My contacts are synced with my phone through my gmail account. I am able to see my contacts as well as go into the contacts app and send a text from there. Is there something that I am doing wrong or perhaps just not getting?

When i want to compose a new text.I tap the face icon top right and when my contacts come up 95 % are there twice.Meaning name twice and number.But if i close out and go to all contacts,groups,update events etc.It does not show double contacts.

I have the Samsung Fascinate obviously but I'm annoyed with one Android feature. I managed to get only my contacts to sync what I want (not e-mails). However, when I send text messages, the message contacts seems to all the e-mail addresses I've previously sent e-mails to.
Is there any way to get rid of that? And why the heck isn't it the same as my contacts?

Since I updated my phone yesterday...When I go to create a text message and enter the recipient it is not finding anyone. There is a few names/e-mails that pop up but not the ones im looking for. My address book is still the same and it is people I regularly message.

Sometimes when I receive messages it makes the notification sound and will show message in notification bar but the text of the message will not appear in the text thread. Used to happen every once in a while, now doing it multiple times a day. I use Handcent but I doubt that is the problem because the messages dont show up in the regular messaging either. Just want to see if i am alone with this problem.

I love Handcent and I know it's super-easy to send message to a group of contacts but I have two questions that I have not been able to figure out:
1) is there a way to create a group and name it instead of having it appear as just a list of people?
2) whenever I send a message to a group it shows each individual message getting sent...is there a way to 'consolidate' this so when I send a message to the group I only see the message I sent once instead of once for each contact it is being sent to?

I'm developing a big application and a part of it is about contacts. I want to, first, get all the groups of contacts. And when the users selects one, show all the contacts of the group.
I've seen other applications and widgets (like LauncherPro widget or HTC Sense Widget) than can do it, but when I try, I don't get same results.

Yes, unfortunately I have friends with iPhones. With iOS4, they can basically do a group text chat that has all the users receiving the messages from everyone in one location and all messages are saved. This is basically like a chat group using text messages. My question is whether android has any apps that can allow us to "join" these chats. I asked my friend to add me as a user to the chat but all that accomplishes is letting me get individual messages from each member of the chat. If I wanted to reply to the group, I would have to reply to each one individually.

When I try to do this to a group with more than 6 people, it converts the message to a mms and wants to use there email and wont add any more than 10 contacts.This way is messed up, I have made several groups of 7 different sets of contacts, They all change to MMS Message when selecting any of those groups.I can send a group message by doing the below actions without any problem for some reason though, Which TBH is just more hasse.

I'm adding a new contact using the 2.0 Contacts Contract APIs and I was just wondering if this is a safe way to get the "My Contacts" group to set the group membership for my new contact. Or is there a better more standard way to get it? I'm using the literal string "System Group: My Contacts" when I query the Groups table to get the source row for the My Contacts group. I found this constant by poking around in the debugger, but It's not documented anywhere that I could find, so I don't know if it's the right thing to use. Is there an actual constant somewhere that I should be using to find the "My Contacts" group? Code...

I recently purchased a HTC Desire Android phone and I'm looking for a way to keep a simple, basic contact list updated and synched with my Gmail account. The problem with the default way on my phone is that it will sync every contact on my Gmail. This is a problem as I only want to have contacts from my phone book synched to one gmail group and vice versa. There is an option to "disply only contacts with numbers" but I still don't like the idea of having every contact on the phone. There is also the problem of the extra empty groups I won't be using, can these be gotten rid of?
I basically just want one list and it to be my default list with all contacts and not have to go through an array of menus to get to that one list on the phone. I don't want that list to be populated by contacts who I may have only emailed once and will never email again. I don't want any gimmicks in between, no gtalk contacts, no facebook contacts, no default gmail contacts and I want to be able to then export this group to a CSV file to use with spreadsheets etc.
This seems to be possible on Android stock and even on HTC Hero Sense UI according to here: Tidy up your Contact List with a Custom Sync Group | Androidheadlines.com
but in the Desire Sense UI, when you go to people/groups/menu, it only gives the option to delete or add. Seems this guy is having the same issue, he has the sync group option but his friend doesn't, both using the same phone. No "Sync Groups" option
There are reports from this thread that some users have had this same problem. Some have a "Sync Groups" option when they go to People>Group Tab and click menu, most don't have this option however and I'm yet to hear from a desire user with this option. Also from this thread (Just want to sync 'My Contacts' on Android, not everything! - Google Mobile Help) one user reported that a "hard reset" gave him the "Sync Group" option. I tried this but had no luck, still the same menu as before.

I have an application that updates all the contacts belonging to a group, I currently do the following : -> Get the group id -> Get all the contacts id inside this group -> For each of them I am doing an update on the contact => This is really heavy and seems to take time in real phones while I expect it to be "instantaneous". I am wondering if we can, in the ContentResolver.update() method specify a kind of join. For instance I'd like to do something like : UPDATE <people> SET <people.name>="<new name>" FROM People p, Groups Memberships gm WHERE p.person_id=gm.person_id and gm.group_id=<my_group_id> Does anyone know if it's possible or not? The update method has got a "where" attribute but can we use this attribute for complexe requests?

I'm using ACTION_PICK to show a contact picker:startActivityForResult( new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, Uri.parse("content://contacts/people") ) ,RESULT_PICK_CONTACT_REQUEST); I'd really like to be showing only contacts from the My Contacts group, rather than the list which includes all the auto-generated contacts. I had hoped to find an Extra to specify the group, but I can't find any sign of one. Is there any way to pick a contact from a specified group, or do I need to write my own picker?

i am a youth sports coach and i need to be able to setup a direct message shortcut to my contact group. Has anyone been able to do this? i can setup indivdual short cuts but not a shortcut for a contact group. Am i doing something wrong? Also, is there a way to change the label on the direct message shortcut?

I want to define some Contact Groups. I am wondering where and how does Android store the groups. Maybe in a Sqlite database? If so, will be able to run a insert on it? Otherwise how do you add new Contacts Group via the emulator?
