Is it safe to use 3rd party Keyboards, (such as Big Buttons etc)? I only ask as i installed a keyboard app, went to enable it but it came up with information saying it collects credit card data and password data.. Wasn't comfortable with this so cancelled enabling it and uninstalled.. I need a keyboard as the one on my phone is pretty good but a bit too small. Can anyone shed a little light on this and recommend me a Big keyboard for the Pulse mini

I'm using Android 2.1 on a HTC Nexus One. I want to collect sensor data while the device is turned off.
By using android.app.Service this works well while the app is in the background but stops working when the display is turned off by the hardware button.
Is there a possibility to collect sensor data while the display is turned off?

So, my music player app (Meridian) has decided to implement an update which "collect anonymous data usage" which doesn't sound cool to me. So, what if I just don't update? I assume the dev can't collect info from me if I don't update, correct? Will the version I'm using expire or something?

In Handler, we can pass some data from a background thread to the UI thread like this:
private void someBackgroundThreadOperation() {
final String data = "hello";
handler.post(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
Log.d(TAG, "Message from bg thread: " + data);
}
}
}
If we use the above, we cannot then use Handler.removeCallbacks(Runnable r), because we won't have references to any of the anonymous runnables we created above. We could create a single Runnable instance, and post that to the handler, but it won't allow us to pass any data through:.............

I am want to pass data back from a Thread to Activity (which created the thread). So I am doing like described on Android documentation.Only one thing I am missing here - where and how should be defined mResults so I could access it from both Activity and Thread, and also would be able to modify as needed? If I define it as final in MyActivity, I can't change it anymore in Thread - as it is shown in example.

I have a main class activity that does the task of sending control to other activities on click of a button. I am also starting a thread in the main class. This thread basically sets up a connection with the server and is active throughout the lifetime of the application.I have two functions in the thread class, send and receive data from server.Therefore, when the other activities need to send/receive data from server, they use those particular functions.First of all please let me know if what I am trying to do is fine as per the architecture of the operating system. If its fine, when I try to run the code, the app crashes and i see a NullPointerException and a RuntimeException in the DDMS log.Could some one please help me out in this or suggest a better way to implement the concept.Also, please be assured that, the other functionality of the code works perfectly fine.

I have developed android application. Now it is time to give it to the beta testers. Is there the standalone application witch will collect LogCat output? I do not want to force testers to install whole android development environment. I was thinking about application witch will collect logs through usb port and display them to the PC console (logging to the SD card is not convenient), so that tester could provide crash trace or some debugging info.

I'm running into some issues with input events and garbage collection, or more precisely object allocation. I am creating a game and have pretty much got my head around the OpenGL environment. I've digested all the relevant material I could find regarding performance, memory allocation etc (and watched the excellent presentation by Chris Pruett - http://code.google.com/events/io/2009/sessions/WritingRealTimeGamesAn...). I've pretty much eliminated any object allocations after initial setup from my game (which is still in its infancy), but I'm still getting a bunch of GC calls, like this:...........................

I am writing an application in which i need to handle messages between the main thread(the deafult UI related thread) and the user created Gamethread.
The requirement is like this.
An activity(say "Activity_X") is setting the view by "setContentView(some "View_Y")". In "Activity_X" i have implemeted "onCreateOptionsMenu()" and "onOptionsItemSelected()" fucntions for creating menus & a switch case for action to be taken on selecting those menus.Menu has items like "resume/pause/zoom/" .
All action to be take on selecting these menus are implemented in "View_Y" in a separate Gamethread by extending "Thread" class.
So whenever a menu is selected in "Activity_X" i need to send a message to "View_Y". And on receiving this ,a particular action/method should be called in View_Y(GameThread).
How can i achieve this using Handlers?Is there any other way of doing this? Please do share with me some code snippets for these.

I've got a problem with my application in that the soft-keyboard is not being closed unless the user pushes the "back" button.I use several layouts which I load using the setContentView method of the application. Some layouts contain multiple EditText fields. The soft-keyboard pops up correctly when the entry boxes are being clicked, but never gets dismissed, even after I switch to a new layout using setContentView (instigated by on-screen push buttons).I found a way of apparently removing the keyboard using the "InputManager" class but how exactly does that work if I don't know which entry field opened/currently owns the keyboard?Is there a way of possibly invalidating a whole layout which would perhaps cause all resources (and hopefully the keyboard) to be cleared? As said before, I currently just use setContentView to load the next screen.

Let me start off my saying I searched this topic before I posted. I am constantly closing apps with them being restarted and I'm not opening them like Music, alarm clock, Amazon mp3 store, moxier mail, etc. The only one I actually use from time to time is music but they open on there own. Is there an app or setting to change this?

I'm writing some JUnit tests for my Android Activity.They run fine and report proper results.However, when i automate the test and start the emulator, the emulator starts with an unlock screen. This prevents the test from running correctly.How do I start an emulator without the unlock screen so that it's ready to run a test immediately? Are there commands in the emulator.exe or adb.exe that can close/ remove the unlock screen?

Should I just have MyDataSetObserver catch the exception and move on? I'd like a more robust solution than that if possible. Or is there some other way I could rearrange my program so that the staleDataException doesn't occur (as often)? I believe that it is happening because I am launching the new activity in my onListItemClick.
