Do we need to call System.gc() to indicate that system should do a garbage collection or just let system to choose when to collect garbage and free it? Because my app will random FCs on certain phones, but if I add some calls to System.gc(), then there were no FCs.

When I am trying to build my application as a part of image I am getting the following error :
E/dalvikvm( 1334): Can't open dex cache '/data/dalvik-cache/ system@a...@test.apk@classes.dex': No such file or directory I/dalvikvm( 1334): Unable to open or create cache for /system/app/ test.apk (/data/dalvik-cache/system@a...@test.apk@classes.dex) E/Util( 1334): Class Not Found : java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
But when I push the apk manually to the device (into system/app), it works fine.
I am wondering why is it so as both ways the apk is present at system/ app only.

I have an application that uses an extended Broadcast Receiver class inside the Activity. I have the extended Broadcast Receiver class as a member variable of the Activity class. But it looks like the receiver references keep changing between its construction and 'on Receive' method call. I would like to understand this better. Here are some details. public class MyEventReceiver extends Broadcast Receiver

We have written an Android application which sends stack traces to our server, if any occur. Sometimes we get weird stack traces that seem not to be an exception from our application.
For example:
CODE:........
There is no mention of our own classes, only Android's standard classes. It's obvious that this exception takes place when scrolling of item list (ListView) occurs, but I can't even uderstand how I can fix this bug. I can't reproduce this bug.

I am trying to write an app that requires different PDF files to be opened and displayed on the E-Reader side of the eDGe's dual screens while the app is running on the LCD side. I've been using Better Terminal Emulator to cruise around the eDGe's file system but can't seem to find the command that opens PDF files. Does anyone know it or is there even one?

I am having issues with calling out with my GV number. I am with Verizon and everytime I try to make a call, a Verizon prompt comes on saying that the call cant be completed. I have searched the forums here and havent seen my issue posted. Is anyone else having this problem? I remember getting a GV update last week and then the problem started. I was able to call other states and countries before the update. I have tried to log out of GV and in and that doesnt work either.

I have noticed that if my background service crashes the system will automatically restart the service after 5 seconds. This is great, but I have noticed that only the onCreate method gets called and not the onStart method. Does this mean the service is properly restarted or do I need to do something special in the onCreate method to make sure it is? I did have my initialisation logic in the onCreate method and my starting service logic in the onStart method but it looks like it will all have to be in the onCreate method.

I've been unable to call or SMS with my HTC Magic for over 24h now. I've restarted it three times, I've went in and out of flight mode a couple of times and I've selected my provider in the list both manually and through automatic.Still nothing. I've tried my SIM card in another phone and there I can call so the card in itself works fine. What really freaks me out is that I'm still able to connect to the internet through my provider. Incoming calls and SMS works fine too. It's reporting full connectivity at my current location and I've tried in several location (several kilomters apart). Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I've had problems when leaving airplane mode that it wouldn't register on the network but then nothing worked.

Below are the only instructions i managed to find from google on how to install the android NDK, it is written as if we all run Linux and presumes we all understand what these obscure tools are. My comments and questions appear in Italics if somone who knows unix and windows would translate for google that would be great!
Android NDK Installation
Introduction:
Please read docs/OVERVIEW.TXT to understand what the Android NDK is and is not. This file gives instructions on how to properly setup your NDK.
I. Requirements:
The Android NDK currently requires a Linux, OS X or Windows host operating system. Windows users will need to install Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com) to use it. Note that running the NDK under MSys is not supported.
You will need to have the Android SDK and its dependencies installed. The NDK cannot generate final application packages (.apk files), only the shared library files that can go into them.
IMPORTANT:
The Android NDK can only be used to target system images using the Cupcake (1.5) or later releases of the platform. This is due to subtle toolchain and ABI related changed that make it incompatible with 1.0 and 1.1 system images.
The NDK requires GNU Make 3.81 or later being available on your development system. Earlier versions of GNU Make might work but have not been tested.
You can check this by running 'make -v' from the command-line. The output should look like:
GNU Make 3.81 Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
...
On certain systems, GNU Make might be available through a different command like 'gmake' or 'gnumake'. For these systems, replace 'make' by the appropriate command when invoking the NDK build system as described in the documentation.
Great some strange thing called gnu make.. if your not going to tell me what it does maybe you then at least you could give me a URL to it?
The NDK also requires a Nawk or GNU Awk executable being available on your development system. Note that the original 'awk' program doesn't implement the 'match' and 'substr' functions used by the NDK build system.
Ok another tool, with 1 of 2 possible names, but not the third... and again where should i download this?
On Windows, you will need to install a recent release of Cygwin to use the NDK.
See http://www.cygwin.com for instructions.
Woohoo a URL! download took about a day because these install instructions do not specify what parts to download.
II. Preparing your installation prebuilt cross-toolchain binaries:
After installing and unarchiving the NDK, you will need to run the following
command from the root folder:
build/host-setup.sh
hello? windows dont run nothing but .exe .com or .dll, just tell me how you want me to run it..
This will test your setup and make sure the NDK can work properly.
Nothing is said about where any of these things need to be installed to (what directory)

Hi, custom classes which are part of a framework, so nothing graphical. One of those (singleton) classes is a Logging class which send logs to my server. I noticed that even though I can call the classes methods in my service it actually won't be logging anything... In my specific example it's osmething like : Logger.getInstance().log("Whatever I want to Log"); Obviously the getInstance is a static method so it can be accessed from anywhere within my project right away.. I was wondering though why this method for example isn't getting called ? Also how do I debug a Service ? Btw I am using of IPC from one of my Activities which gets bound to the service and can start/stop the music for example...

Anyone else having a problem getting video chat to work from Fring/Skype? I applied this OTA update this afternoon, and now all i can get in Fring is audio. My FF cam shows myself, and Skype on the PC shows it's own webcam, but neither me nor the receiving PC can see each other's cams. I've done a reboot on both PC and EVO and still no video-to-video. I'm not saying it is the OTA that caused this, just wondering if someone else can test their Fring/Skype after the OTA has been installed to verify?

Just dialed my network operator to listen to how much credit i had on my phone, but when i tapped on 'end call' the phone did not end the call, eventually i had to switch the phone off. It happened a second time too but seems to be okay now.
Is it something i should be concerned about, or is it quite normal, or maybe it's happened to one of you as well.

Does anyone else have an issue doing this? I received an error stating "got an error stating this application requires network access. Enable mobile network or wi-fi to download data." My mobile network was on at the time as I was on a call. Any settings I should be looking at? I tried both the stock browser and skyfire & had the issue with both.
