I know Sprint's hotspot feature is to use the EVO "Wirelessly" with up to 8 diff. devices and that is what the $30 charge is for if you want to use that feature.It's my understanding that "Tethering" is a different thing where u directly connect your EVO to a laptop and use the "Internet Sharing" mode that way with only that device. I don't pay the extra $30 so i dont have hotspot for my EVO but I am able to Tether my phone to my laptop. Ive read that tethering is not allowed on the sprint network without purchasing the Hotspot feature and i can have my contract terminated if i continue to use tethering with my EVO. IS THAT TRUE? Is the tethering feature with the EVO at this point, just a feature that has not been disabled or patched yet or is it infact supported by sprint without needing to buy the Sprint Hotspot feature?????? And if it is freely available is there a cap to how much data i can use while tethering? cause you know, i do pay the damn """ $10 premium charge""" for each EVO on my account..

I've never expiremented with ad hoc networks, nor do I have an EVO yet, so this might be completely far-fetched, but is it possible? What I'm saying is:
1. Use one of the free/one time fee tethering apps
2. You now have internet on your Windows laptop
3. Set up an ad hoc network to share your internet
4. Connect other devices to that network

I need to use both USB tethering and portable HiFi hotspot functionality often. Unfortunately both of them seem to be quite unreliable. Sometimes internet sharing can work for five minutes, sometimes for an hour. Usually resetting either tethering or hot spot functionality fixed the issue, but sometimes I have to reboot the phone.I'd like to hear if other users of Desire have the same issue.

Has anyone else notice the slow tethering speed on Froyo (FRF91)?I ran speedtest on 3 devices while tethering is turned. Here are the result:Nexus One (the tethering host device): 2Mbit/s down, 600Kbit up.My laptop on WIN 7 (connect to the hotspot): 200Kbit/s D, 600Kbit up Ipad (connected to the hotspot): 400Kb down, 600Kb up.The slow speed really annoys me. Even youtube is not watchable at the lowest quality setting. However, the upload speed is actually stay unaffected in all 3 situations, which made me think somehow the speed is controlled by Froyo.

Froyo is supposed to bring tethering and wifi hotspot for free. Do you think Sprint will have enough influence to have this feature disabled and retain that BS $29.99 hotspot/tethering fee? Currently, usb tethering is disabled (the famous error code 67), you think we'll see error code 67 with froyo comes out?

I recently rooted my Incredible and installed Cyanogen 6.00 RC3. I liked some things about it but missed some of the stock HTC widgets and apps. The Cyanogen rom had wifi hot spot, and it worked great. I could connect more than one computer to it, as it acted like a Hotspot.
Today i reflashed to Virtuous 2.7 Rom, which is alot like the stock 2.2. I got back the things I missed in Cyanogen but no wifi hotspot. Instead, there is "Wireless Tethering" which doesn't seem to work. The latest version is installed, version 2.0.5-pre9. Neither of my computers can "see" the connection.
Is there any way I can get the wifi hot spot app that was in Cyanogen and install it on my phone with the Virtuous 2.7 Rom? wireless tethering really doesn't do what I want it to.

Will it be possible to tether the epic 4g to a laptop (perhaps through USB) instead of using the wifi hot spot capability? The wifi router/hot spot option is an additional $30 a month and I don't anticipate I will need the option often enough to justify the cost. Is there an option to tether epic4g without the wifi hot spot option?

I've had a Galaxy Tab for 2 years, and used it, very successfully, as a wifi hotspot from May until July this year, when my laptop was suddenly not able to connect to the internet via the hotspot. It connected just fine to the Tab, and has no problems on my home wifi. The Tab was still able to connect to the internet normally, with no apparent problems.
I fiddled about a bit and thought perhaps it was a hardware problem, so bought a seconhand Nexus S. That has been working fine until yesterday, when the exact same thing has happened - the laptop can connect fine to the Nexus, but says there is no internet connection. The Nexus itself is connecting just fine.
I'm in the UK - my carrier is Three (Hutchinson).

I am wanting to programmaticaly set the state of the enable flag for WiFi Hotspot Tethering in Froyo. Something like this:
boolean isEnabled = Settings.System.getInt(context.getContentResolver(),
Settings.System.SOME_WIFI_TETHER_FLAG, 0) == 1;
// toggle HOTSPOT mode
Settings.System.putInt(context.getContentResolver(),
Settings.System.SOME_WIFI_TETHER_FLAG_ON, isEnabled ? 0 : 1);
// Post an intent to reload
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.SOME_WIFI_TETHER_FLAG_CHANGED);
intent.putExtra("state", !isEnabled);
sendBroadcast(intent);
Is there a programmatic flag for turning off wifi hotspot mode in 2.2 from Settings.System class?

Android Version: 2.2 T-Mobile branded
Network: Base - a brand of e-plus, Germany
Taskiller Used: None
Issue: Switch on tethering OR mobile hotspot ->mobile network dies
I've installed Froyo on a T-Mobile branded Desire. After the update, turning on USB tethering leads to immediate loss of mobile network - it just turns itself off. Same goes for the mobile Wifi hotspot: turn on -> for 2 seconds, it's working -> mobile network drops off. Moving into airplane mode and back brings back the network, but tethering is a goner. With 2.1, USB tethering had worked. I'm on Base, a brand of e-plus. I've talked to their customer services, they say Base absolutely supports tethering.

But it looks like the receiver references keep changing between its construction and 'on Receive' method call. I would like to understand this better. We have written an Android application which sends stack traces to our server, if any occur. Sometimes we get weird stack traces that seem not to be an exception from our application.
For example:
CODE:........
There is no mention of our own classes, only Android's standard classes. It's obvious that this exception takes place when scrolling of item list (ListView) occurs, but I can't even uderstand how I can fix this bug. I can't reproduce this bug.

Below are the only instructions i managed to find from google on how to install the android NDK, it is written as if we all run Linux and presumes we all understand what these obscure tools are. My comments and questions appear in Italics if somone who knows unix and windows would translate for google that would be great!
Android NDK Installation
Introduction:
Please read docs/OVERVIEW.TXT to understand what the Android NDK is and is not. This file gives instructions on how to properly setup your NDK.
I. Requirements:
The Android NDK currently requires a Linux, OS X or Windows host operating system. Windows users will need to install Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com) to use it. Note that running the NDK under MSys is not supported.
You will need to have the Android SDK and its dependencies installed. The NDK cannot generate final application packages (.apk files), only the shared library files that can go into them.
IMPORTANT:
The Android NDK can only be used to target system images using the Cupcake (1.5) or later releases of the platform. This is due to subtle toolchain and ABI related changed that make it incompatible with 1.0 and 1.1 system images.
The NDK requires GNU Make 3.81 or later being available on your development system. Earlier versions of GNU Make might work but have not been tested.
You can check this by running 'make -v' from the command-line. The output should look like:
GNU Make 3.81 Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
...
On certain systems, GNU Make might be available through a different command like 'gmake' or 'gnumake'. For these systems, replace 'make' by the appropriate command when invoking the NDK build system as described in the documentation.
Great some strange thing called gnu make.. if your not going to tell me what it does maybe you then at least you could give me a URL to it?
The NDK also requires a Nawk or GNU Awk executable being available on your development system. Note that the original 'awk' program doesn't implement the 'match' and 'substr' functions used by the NDK build system.
Ok another tool, with 1 of 2 possible names, but not the third... and again where should i download this?
On Windows, you will need to install a recent release of Cygwin to use the NDK.
See http://www.cygwin.com for instructions.
Woohoo a URL! download took about a day because these install instructions do not specify what parts to download.
II. Preparing your installation prebuilt cross-toolchain binaries:
After installing and unarchiving the NDK, you will need to run the following
command from the root folder:
build/host-setup.sh
hello? windows dont run nothing but .exe .com or .dll, just tell me how you want me to run it..
This will test your setup and make sure the NDK can work properly.
Nothing is said about where any of these things need to be installed to (what directory)

My wife's name is Marilyn. Not Maryland. No, I don't want to send a text to the state of Maryland. Or call the state. :0)
Is there a way to "train" Android to associate a certain spoken word with a certain result?
Oh, and it can't get "U2" or "REM" right either! I have been messing around with the new voice commands (after downloading the app and widget replacement), and I figured these would be popular enough (although oddly spelled) to be configured in. It got the Beatles, though!

I just got off the phone with a Sprint Customer Care Specialist who kept insisting on telling me that I could only use the hotspot option if I had a 4G signal.That if I only was getting a 3G signal that I would not be able to activate the hotspot. I asked her several times if she was sure this was correct because I was under the impression that you just needed a data signal in order to set up a hotspot and it didn't matter if it was 3G or 4G. She put me on hold twice to confirm and came back with the same answer. This isn't right, is it?

So have had my Evo since end of june using my hotspot 2 power up my laptops and ps3 no problems got 4g and hotspot going at the same time than I download 2.2 and every time i power up the hotspot the 4g drops out. I call sprint and dude tells me i was one of the lucky ones that got my hotspot for free? for the first month but now its gonna be 29.95 if i wanna use the hotspot? hello thats why i bought the fn thing? He said he would give me one more month for no charge but thats his final offer! I decline and ask him to give me the president so he can tell me why sprint is sticking it 2 me once again! Does the 2.2 software allow them to turn the hotspot one and off again at will? Until I figure this all out im leaving my other evo on 2.1.
