Android :: Restoring Applications On Replacement Phone?

Oct 15, 2010

I bought an Audubon Birds Field Guide app for my Droid X and installed it, in addition to a ton of other free apps. Unfortunately the Droid died and I got a new one from VZ. When I took the new DX to the VZ store to set it up the guy said I should be able to restore all the apps I had installed, including the one I bought, but none of them showed up on the phone. He was not really all that helpful and told me to contact Audubon about replacing the app. I just did that, but I am concerned that none of the apps I had already installed showed up on the new DX.

General :: Upgrading To ICS And Restoring Applications?

Mar 19, 2012

I want to upgrade my SGS2 to ICS using one of the official firmwares, but I want to be able to restore certain apps and their associated data.

I can use Titanium Backup to backup and restore apps currently.

If I backed up these apps, upgraded to ICS (with a wipe install) and tried to restore these apps, would everything work out, will there be some gotchas due to changes in the Android versions?

Motorola Droid :: ERE25 And Restoring Applications

Mar 4, 2010

How are you restoring your apps?
Titanium Backup?
Astro?
Manual?

If manual, do you keep a list of which apps you've got installed so that you can restore them more easily? Does anyone restore /data from 2.0.1? Or will that just cause more problems? I've used Astro in the past, but not for ROM purposes. And I've got Titanium installed, but have never used it. It seems like there are several options but I've yet to hear of any preferred option from anyone. Look forward to getting in on this ERE25 action!

HTC EVO 4G :: Restoring Applications After Rooting And Flashing Fresh?

Sep 28, 2010

Last night I rooted my Evo (Android 2.1) using Unrevoked 3.21, then flashed the new Fresh ROM and radios. I encountered several "gotchas" that may help others doing the same thing.

1. I had to try the Unrevoked program four times before the root "took". The first three times I got the message "Unable to obtain root. This happens sometimes" message. I would actually like to know (at least at a high level) why it failed the first three times. I tried it on a Win XP laptop the first two times, then switched to a Windows Vista machine, then back to my XP machine when it finally worked.

2. After verifying that my rooted Android 2.1 was working ok, I decided to flash the new Fresh ROM. First, I did a Titanium backup of everything on the phone, that went fast (although the Titanium interface could be improved. You have to go into the menu and select Batch to do the actual backup). As a fail-safe, I tried to do a backup of apps + data using MyBackup Pro. Unfortunately, it kept hanging on the app backup, so I just did a data backup. I also did an Astro backup of the apps, and (of course) I also did a nandroid backup of the current ROM (thanks to the good advice on this forum).

3. I then did a factory reset and cache wipe of the phone, then went ahead and flashed the latest Fresh ROM and radios. Both went very smoothly, I checked the version of the ROM and baseband in the phone settings and they match. Unfortunately, restoring the apps and data did NOT go smoothly at all. First, I discovered that Titanium doesn't seem to work as advertised. It didn't back up all my apps (I have over 150, guess that's a lot, but still!). A good example was Folder Organizer. It didn't get backed up so I had to re-download it. Next, Titanium didn't restore any of my data, SMS, call logs, home screen settings, nada. Fortunately, the MyBackup Pro data backup had almost all of that stuff, so I was able to get most of it back. The Astro backup was pretty useless the app list is not sorted by name (it uses the "com" package name") so it's virtually impossible to find what you're looking for. Lesson learned: if you've heavily customized your home screens, maybe flashing ROM's is not for you. If there's a better way to restore apps and settings after flashing, let us know!

4. Finally (and I believe this is a known issue) the FriendStream widget and Facebook contact linking is not working with this ROM.
At least I'm rooted now. Wireless tether works, the ROM works as advertised (scrolling and transitions are noticeably smoother due to the frame rate mod). I haven't had a chance to test 4G, I've got it turned on and will test around town. If it doesn't work then I'll restore the nandroid backup and go back to stock.

Android :: Looking For Few Replacement Applications If Exist?

Aug 7, 2010

I already have a home replacement app (tried out a few and settled on ADWlauncher for the time being.) I'm wondering if there's an app that (in a similar way to a home replacement) would replace the actual calls function of the phone, I find the 'slide to answer' very annoying as I often miss it - and navigating the call log and contacts list from within the default phone app is very annoying. Is there anything like that? Also is it possible to change the colour of the notification bar? I'd prefer if it was dark blue (or at least a darker colour) to fit in with the theme for the rest of my phone. (On the Moto Milestone 2.1 if this makes any difference)

Android :: Apps Trying To Automatically Restoring To Phone

Nov 18, 2010

I have been messing around with some ROMs on my Droid1, every time I flash a new rom it auto restores my apps. It hasn't done this at all until today. I have tried disabling it in my settings but it still doesn't stop. Also when I go into the downloads page in the market to cancel them, I can some of them but when I try to cancel the others if causes the market to force close. I would like to know if there is anyway to stop google from auto downloading them when I sign in? When I turned off the backup it said it would delete the info from googles servers, but it obviously has not lol because I have tried flashing the rom over again since then. I know most people would like this to happen, but I want a clean install.

General :: Quickly Restoring SMS From 2.3.5 Android Phone

Jan 10, 2013

I am trying to transfer about 14,000 SMS from an unrooted 2.3.5 Android to a rooted 4.2.1 Android phone.

MyBackup Pro backs them up quickly, but restores them at a rate of less than 1/second. Thus, I have been looking for another tool to back up with:

1. Titanium Backup: no, as the 2.3.5 phone is unrooted;

2. new Windows-based Ultimate Backup Tool: no, as it requires Android 4.0 or greater.

Any recommendations, other than running the restore tool all night? A tool that allowed me to back the SMS up in chronological blocks could be very useful.

Samsung Vibrant :: Does Reformatting Complicate Restoring Phone Again?

Sep 25, 2010

I had to reset my phone to solve a GPS crashing problem. Prior to the reset, I had successfully installed Ryan's one-click lag fix, and my phone was a demon. After the reset, I noticed the SU was left behind, and when I did Ryan's rooting step, it told me the phone was already rooted and that the lag fix was unavailable. When I click on lag fix it tells me a lag fix is already installed and reports this file: (/system/bin/playlogos1 less than 5kb). But I cannot find this file.

Do I have to reformat the internal memory and, if so, how do I do that? Does reformatting complicate restoring the phone again?

General :: Restoring App Data From Different Phone Recovery Backup?

Nov 19, 2013

I used to have a HTC Desire HD. On that was a brilliant ROM, spent ages on it and it had LOTS of data and apps. One time I backed it up through Clockworkmod and a few days later it bricked. I managed to breath life into it but I couldn't restore that file because I moved it to my PC and so much time had passed that I couldn't find it. Recently I found the backup and saw the apps and app data was still inside (opened using winrar).

Is there any way I can move this app data and the apps to my Galaxy Note 2? I had a Titanium backup but it was on my phone memory which got wiped, the SD card was untouched. If there's an incompatibility between HTC and Samsung recovery backups could I use my dad's HTC Wildfire to put the app data on then Titanium backup and move the apps and app data over?

Android :: How To Do Phone DateFormat Replacement?

May 3, 2010

I need to split a date string into pieces and I'm doing it using the public final StringBuffer format (Object object, StringBuffer buffer, FieldPosition field) from the java.text.DateFormat class. However, the implementation of this function is really slow, hence Android has an own implementation in android.text.format.DateFormat. BUT, in my case, I want to extract the different pieces of the date string (year, minute and so on). Since I need to be locale independent, I can not use SimpleDateFormat and custom strings. I do it as follows: Code...
For some reason, the format() overload with the FieldPosition argument is not included in the android platform. Any ideas of how to do this in another way? Is there any easy way to tokenize the pattern string? Any other ideas?

HTC EVO 4G :: Finding Replacement Application For Phone?

May 16, 2010

Not sure if this is the right place to post this up, but I figure there's going to be a lot of you coming from other non-Android handsets. I've got a TP 2 - good l' WinMo. I've grown pretty attached to it and there's a couple of apps I'm -really- going to miss and I hope a couple of you know of some good alternatives:
GPS Speedo(.exe) - Just a single exe file, all it does is make the whole screen white, with large black numbers in the center. It used the phone's GPS to measure your speed (in MPH or KPH). Any Android equivalent?
OBD Gauge - Data logging of OBD II cars via serial or, in my case, blue tooth. I used this to data log my car, or when I'm working on tuning other vehicles. This one is kinda indispensable. I'm really hoping someone will know of an alternative to this one. It connects over blue tooth by connecting via BT serial port.
G Alarm - Excellent alarm app. I use my phone to wake me up every morning. This will re-play alarms after 10 minutes, unless totally dismissed, even require a simple math problem to dismiss/snooze the alarm. I don't have such high requirements I just want a good morning alarm clock style app that will wake me up every morning.

Motorola Droid :: Replacement For Business Phone

I'm looking to see if I can get any good advice on a replacement phone for my work. The droid is my personal phone and I am up for a new device for my business phone. I would try an android phone (other than the droid...I don't want two of them ) but I don't know how well android integrates with the Windows server for syncing contacts, calendar, outlook, etc. Any suggestions on phones currently out or coming out in the next month or two? Can have a physical keyboard or a decent touchscreen keyboard. I don't care as long as it works better than my HTC Touch did. Once I got my Droid. The resistive screen just didn't work for me anymore.

HTC EVO 4G :: Radio Shack Replacement Phone Worse

Jun 24, 2010

I picked up my phone on launch day, version 2 hw. I was having a bit of the grounding issue, but the big problem was light leakage onto the screen. The whole bottom of the screen was brighter than the top. And the headphone port was junk. So I finally got my replacement yesterday, hoping to get a better phone. I turn it on, and its still a version 2 hardware. Looks good though as I played with it throughout the day. This morning I had some time to really look at it, and noticed a bunch of problems. The battery cover does not fit properly, the whole right side doesnt click in. It's literally just hanging there and has fallen off twice already. The grounding issue is bad on this phone, it wont even work in my gps holder in my car. And I am getting serious light leakage on the bottom of the phone now. I can literally stick my whole fingernail in between the bottom of the screen and the bezel. So what should I do here? Should I just try to get another replacement from RS and HOPE it works better? Or should I try to complain to Sprint about it? Sprint already told me they cant do anything yet since its within the 30 day purchase period. I really dont have time to be running back and forth to RS all week waiting for a replacement.
