Android :: Is Droid X Enough Of A Reason To Go Verizon?
Jul 5, 2010
I am a fan of T-Mobile. I like the ability to pop out my SIM card, and pop it in the next phone of choice, bringing everything with me. This is especially handy due to the fact that I work on a naval base tha does not permit cameraphones of any kind. I like T-Mobile's customer service. They are always polite and know what the hell they are talking about. I'm pondering getting a Galaxy S for T-Mobile.On the other hand, Verizon's new Droid X looks amazing. I love that 4.3" screen. (had the HTC HD2 with the 4.3". Loved it) I would mention the processor and other features, but it seems these two phones, minus the physical keyboard I don't care about, are close to par.Verizon, I must begrudgingly say, also have better coverage where I live. This Droid almost looks appealing emough to stay with Verizon and upgrade. So, do I get the phone I'll probably like more, or get an almost as nice phone with the ability to remove my SIM and have a crappy phone at least at work. ( keep in mind that I have access to a landline at all times at work, anyway.)

For some strange reason I can't seem to set-up my personal e-mail account on this Droid phone. I click on "e-mail", I type in my e-mail address and my password, and then I click "next". And then I get a message that says my username and/or password does not match. But I am positive it does, as I have gone online to test it. I have tried retyping my username and passwrod over and over again without any success. I can't get passed that screen.
I have Verizon FiOS at my house, so my e-mail is set-up through Verizon/Yahoo.

I'm very interested in the Droid Pro due to the form factor. Is there any reason (NOT keyboard or screen related) that I should consider other Droids as a better option? I have no experience at all with Android devices, so I'm here for some assistance.

My android application works well but it's performance(speed) is slow. In my logcat i saw frequent garbage collection operation like
11-02 15:07:20.647: DEBUG/dalvikvm(12571): GC freed 295 objects / 38448 bytes in 93ms
Is this the reason for low performance? How can i improve my applications performance?

I am trying to update Android SDK on Windows XP. For that I open Android SDK and ADV manager and try to get available updates. The HTTPS SSL error appears. Then I go to settings, uncheck the "force https...", then add new site "http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/ repository.xml" (the same as default but with HTTP protocol) then again try to get available updates.
After this step I get the weird error:
XML verification failed for http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml. Error: cvc-elt.1: Cannot find the declaration of element 'sdk:sdk- repository'. Failed to fetch URL http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml, reason: Unknown
Does anybody know what is the reason of this error? This happens on all SDKs I have on my PC: Android 1.6_r1 and 2.0_r3

I have had several calls made from my HTC Droid Eris when I have not made the call. The call seems to generate by itself for no reason. Am I doing something wrong ? Is there a way to lock down the 'call' mode so that it can't just make a call by itself. I know it sounds crazy, but I swear that the phone makes calls by itself.

The learning curve is a little steep, but once you learn it ... it is THEE home-replacement app. Checkout the other Sweeter Home threads with pics to see what we're doing with this newly-released home-replacement app But I digress. As I have experimented with MANY apps, and home-replacement apps ... I am constantly watching how much available memory I have remaining. I open Task Killer many times throughout the day to check this. For the record, I have approx. 140 apps installed at this time. This hasn't changed all that much over the passed few weeks. I usually have between 38-52M available memory. I really haven't seen it above the 52M mark in a long time. But late last night, I finally finished enough of Sweeter Home to switch over to it full time. When I opened Task Killer, I couldn't believe what I saw! I had 68M available memory! I've been watching it all morning, and it seems to vary between the mid 50s, to the low 70s. So it appears that Sweeter Home Preview 2 is somehow using approx. 20M less memory than Launcher, Home, or Home++ Beta.

I am no newcomer to the HTC Droid Eris. Just recently my phone has deleted ALL of my text messages. I do not have a limit on how many texts I can hold in my inbox. But it has deleted all of my texts atleast 5 times in the last 2 weeks.

I've been reading about the Eris battery life issues on this and other forums. Even with all the tweaks that users have applied to it, the Eris continues to have a rep for bad battery life. Its a bit odd that the Eris gets worse battery life than the Moto Droid which has a larger screen and more processing power, don't you think? I've also read that Eris reception is not that great, that the Droid gets 3G reception when the Eris can't etc.
These issues (battery life and reception) lead me to wonder if they are related. Perhaps the Eris has a weak antenna, or bad antenna placement? This would lead it to have worse reception than other smart phones and also worse battery life because it would have to apply more juice to the antenna to reach the cell phone towers. I've attached a poll to see if there is any correlation between bad battery life and bad reception.

I rooted my droid, and am currently running smoked glass 6. Twice I have noticed my phone heating up (120 F was the most before I pulled the battery) for no apparent reason. I open up auto-killer, kill extra processes, and no difference. No application can be causing this, yet my phone will heat up for no reason. It is not all the time, but I fear it could become a regular thing.

Is there a reason some apps won;t exit, quit, end? Or is it poor design. Currently I have seesmis and sportstap which I cant seem to terminate. I like the apps but just dont want them to keep notifying me.

My Gmail wont push to my droid. I can have 100 emails and nothing will be sent to my phone. If I pull up Gmal on my phone, then hit refresh everything shows up. But I never receive a notification. Also, trying to send something from gmail is useless. Ill reply to an Email and it will sit in the outgoing folder for hours saying, "Sending". If I hit refresh while it sits in the outgoing folder then the email will send.
I have check all my settings and I cant figure out what my issue is.

I was using 2.1update1 which was rooted using easyroot. I deleted a few stock applications that i didn't need such as corporate calendar, visual voice mail, and amazon mp3. Now after attempting to apply the OTA 2.2 update, i receive the following error message:
assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/CorpCal.apk")
followed by a bunch of numbers and letters
and then
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(status 7)
Installation Aborted.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Did i need that Corporate Calendar app for some reason?

Last week I switched from att and the iphone to verizon and an HTC Eris. loving the phone and android. However being new i did not research too much and saw the HTC incredible is the latest and greatest. Yes it will cost me more for the phone but maybe I shoulda sprung for it. After all I will be stuck with it for the better part of 2 years. Is there that much of a difference in the 2.I am aware of the 8.0 camera and the faster processor. don't mind spending the extra $$ if its worth it.

I am based in Germany and publish the "Last Call Widget" on the Android Market.I have been steady improving it over time, but one group of users still complain about it not working on their devices. My widget listens for the "android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE" intent, and then sets an alarm to update the last call UI in 20 seconds, then 60 seconds, then 5 minutes, 1 hour, etc. This works reliably on all my test devices, even with aggressive task killers (try it yourself). Unfortunately I have a cluster of users with Motorola Droids on the Verizon network who complain that the UI does not automatically update. I believe Verizon is a CDMA network (we have GSM here in Europe), though the Android API docs don't specify any implementation differences. This could also be a driver issue on the Motorola Droid (we have GSM Motorola Milestones in Europe).

This summer i would like to purchase my first smartphone. I'm out of contract with Verizon so switching carriers is a possibility (not att) I did all the research I could handle and I came to two conclusions or possibilities. Jump ships to sprint for the HTC Evo (I like the mobile hotspot feature, the hdmi feature, and eventually the possibility to stream netflix).Wait for Verizon to release the Droid 2 or Shadow that would have similar specs, (I'd like to have a physical keyboard though with droid 2)Is sprint's cheap plans and bang for your buck really as enticing as it sounds or will i regret leaving verizon's coverage?? I live in rural Kansas btw, everybody here has Verizon. I don't know anybody with Sprint.

I'm due for an upgrade. I currently have the env 3. I plan to use the phone for apps and the internet mostly. I don't make many phone calls (less than 20-30 min/day) and don't expect to use it a ton. i would like for it to have a great battery life and probably an actual keyboard (but not a necessity). what would be the best model? is there a model coming out soon i should consider? i saw the droid pro, would this be a good choice (like the keyboard, but it has a smaller screen)

I'm getting a user error report that my app thinks their DROID handset isn't connected to 3G, and after getting a logfile from him I think I've narrowed it down to the return value from NetworkInfo.getSubtype (). The code in question is the following, based on Jeff Sharkey's I/O 2009 talk "Coding for Battery Life" (see Slide 10 at http://dl.google.com/io/2009/pres/W_0300_CodingforLife-BatteryLifeTha...)My strong suspicion is the check against TelephonyManager.NETWORK_TYPE_UMTS, that either Verizon or DROID is returning a different value for its 3G network. My guess is either NETWORK_TYPE_EVDO_0 or NETWORK_TYPE_EVDO_A, but I'd like to have more than a guess here. Anyone have direct knowledge, or a better position to guess from? I know Jeff often monitors this group. Jeff, any suggestions, given this was your code to start with? Code...

Yesterday my Verizon Motorola droid was automatically updated from Android 2.1 to 2.2. I was informed that it had been done via text message. I was not consulted or warned, only informed after the fact. It does not cause any problem in my app. I used the getSDcardPath (syntax approx) rather than hard-coding /sdcard/data..... and I have not found any other conflicts.
How are Android updates handled on devices? Always done automatically, this instance of auto update was unusual, or what?
If it is always done automatically then we MUST incorporate all accommodations for future changes that are not backwards compatible just to keep our apps running on machines that they were designed to run on. (it is difficult to anticipate all future changes!)
Previous to this automatic update, I was thinking that we should incorporate all accommodations for future changes that are not backwards compatible so the app would run on future Android versions. (this option does not require knowledge of the future.)

HTC TWITTER Droid Eris is getting an update to a newer version of Android early next year. Google Navigation support is coming your way Verizon commits to 'newer' Android for Droid Eris with Google Maps Navigation in Q1 2010 - Engadget so what does that mean? Is it an over the air update or we have to get it flashed at the store.

I have the original droid with 2.1 (still haven't got update) the phone has some problems like, restarting, cant update certain apps, unresponsive. i just got the phone in may 2010 an im starting to think its getting out dated. I once had it rooted to 2.2 but went back to stock for OTA 2.2 . But my question is, that do u think i can call verizon and tell them my problems, say its my 3rd droid and im getting tired of it. Since there not making the oringinal droid anymore do u think they'll let me upgrade to Droid X with little or no fee? i got the idea from another post, reading that someone had success with this trick?

I'm trying to find information on how to programmatically access the HTC Droid Incredible's supposed 8GB of internal storage. To determine the external storage (SD Card) location, In examining HTC/Google Nexus One, Motorola Droid, and HTC Dream/G1 phones, there (as would be expected) does not appear to be any mount point for such arbitrary internal storage. On these phones the internal storage is divided amongst /data, /system, and /cache partitions. The Incredible's internal storage is certainly not going to be located in /system. /cache is also unlikely given that it is globally non-readable/non-executable. I'd read in reviews that the phone will still be limited to 512MB or so for apps, suggesting that it is not simply a subdirectory of /data.

I got the Droid about a month ago and love it. I do have a problem though: My house is in the same town as a non-verizon CDMA tower (US Cellular) and very far away from the nearest Verizon tower. With my other Verizon phones (older handsets), they just connect to the close tower and have full signal all the time without any issues. My Droid, on the other hand, will always try to stay connected to the distant Verizon tower - it can be very difficult and frustrating to make calls with the Droid because there is often no signal and the phone is unable to place a call. I don't need the 3G at home, as the Droid can use my wireless for browsing, etc. How can I get the Droid to stop trying to connect to the distant Verizon tower and connect to the nearby partner tower instead (so that I have high-quality phone signal at home)? I have called Verizon and Motorola and nothing seems to help.
