Android :: Possible To Add Aim Buddies To GTalk App On Droid?
Aug 4, 2010
I have just recently gotten a Samsung Vibrant and am loving it so far but. But I do have one question since GTalk "alwyas online" I would like to use it as my main instant message app, but is there a way to add AIM buddies to the app on android?

As we are well aware, we can now talk to our aim buddies through gtalk on our computers. I've been trying to figure out how I can do the same on my droid. I would like to somehow be able to talk to my aim buddies though the gtalk program that comes pre-installed in my droid. Any ideas of how this can be done? I'm currently using ebuddy, but if I could cut down on the number of running apps that would be great.

On my Sprint Hero's native IM app I can sign into AIM just fine but only 1/3 of my buddies show up... I thought this might be a common problem but can't find any mention of it anywhere... am I missing something? It's not that offline buddies are hidden.
EDIT: I'm aware of Hi AIM and the other third-party apps available but would rather use the native one if I can get it to work (I hardly touch AIM on the phone, just need to use it every once in awhile). Also, I have the 1.56 update.

I am trying to make a wave app which uses the locations of latitude buddies.
Using PackageManager.queryContentProviders()
I have discovered com.google.android.maps.FriendsProvider.
By requesting a Cursor from content://com.google.android.maps.FriendsProvider I have discovered the columns _id, people_id and email.
After inspecting the values in the email column I have concluded these are indeed the latitude buddies!
However, what I would like to use in my own app are the display names and locations of my latitude buddies. Is it possible to get these from this content provider? Should I append some path to the URI? (I have tried guessing many)

Both my wife and I have the droid, no matter what we set our status to (available, DND) in the gtalk app we appear away to everyone. The status messages seem to update fine though. Is their a setting we're missing, or is there a bug in the gtalk app?

So I did a rename to the file gtalkservice.apk to *.bak. I never use the app because I have eBuddy. But since I did it I am getta the error that com.google.process.gapps is force closing when I reboot the phone. Is this caused because gtalk is gone? And why?
Now the weirdest thing is that GTalk is still there, but I've previously been successful on Visual Voicemail, and others.

For some reason it can't stay logged in, Gtalk logs in and out like every 5 seconds. I have deleted the app, factory rest, battery pulls but no luck. The factory reset was for multiple reasons.

So sometimes I'll go into my contacts and notice that some of them have the green ball lit up telling me that they are online in gtalk. Now I am not signed onto gtalk... but yet somehow I see that in my running services that GTalkService is running.
I can only assume that its eating away battery trying to see how is online and not. I certainly don't need this info unless I wish to go online myself... in which case I would actually go into the gtalk app.
ANyways, obviously i've been killing it in the running services, but it just comes back all on its own. ANy idea why or how to stop it?

I have 2 Gmail Accounts, one for business/school and the other for friends/personal/gtalk. Is there anyway I can run my gmail app with the business account and Gtalk with the other account? It's kind of obnoxious to have to switch back and forth.

This is not specifically related to the Gtalk app, but it is while using the Gtalk app that it occurs. As you may or may not know, UK users of Googlemail have recently been able to switch to a Gmail account. I did this and it caused problems with signing into Gtalk (even though there were no problems signing into Gmail via the Gmail app). I've since followed some advice found elsewhere to go into Gmail, then Settings, then Accounts and Import and to change my address back to @googlemail.com. Doing this has allowed me to sign in to the Gtalk app, and I can see my friends on the friends list but I can't send messages. I always get the message "This message couldn't be sent". Any ideas how to fix this one error in the Gtalk app?

Figured I'd ask one more odd question...
Is there a setting or app that would allow me to add a "gtalk" icon to a contact so that when I select a contact I would get the option to directly "talk/chat" with them via "Gtalk"?
Currently, when I select a contact I get the following icons:
"phone or call", "edit info", and "Instant Message"
I'd like to add to that list the "Gtalk" option.

Objective: The ability to have multiple (two) Google talk accounts run simultaneously. Currently I've set up my phone with my Gmail (@gmail.com) account. The Gtalk application has been configured with this account by default (I think) which is great. However I would like to be able to be signed into my work chat as well, which is a Google apps premier account. I have not found a way to accomplish this without having to download another app. The apps that I've tried so far are: Ebuddy and Meebo. Ebuddy works awesome with my Google Apps account except for the fact that it sends messages after I chat indicating that I am using Ebuddy. The spam message includes a link to a webpage. I can't figure out how to turn this off, so I've stopped using it. I'm willing to pay for a version that doesn't do this, but I don't think there is a pay for version of Ebuddy for Android. And Meebo doesn't work with my Google Apps account. Can anyone point me in right direction? Maybe a recommendation?

You can now search Android apps from your Gtalk with AndroLib Gtalk Bot. Just add in your Gtalk contacts, type your query, and the search result will be sent to you.So enjoy the new features.

I never really gave Gtalk much attention in the 7 months I have owned my phone. But lately, specially since a lot of my friends are getting android powered phones, I have grown to really liking it. I actually like using it over text messages. I think that if I can get the majority of my friends to use it I might be able to lower my text message plan. Also since I get terrible reception in my apartment I find that having people contact me through Gtalk works out a lot better since I am on wifi at home. I would like to see a widget come out for it (which is the big advantage of text messages over it), and I hope google develops it more. I would also like to see maybe video chat integration since Gingerbread is suppose to have built in support for it.
