Android :: New Versions To Handle Lack Of A Keyboard?
Jul 21, 2009
Has anyone with a MyTouch/Magic tried any of the nesoid/snesoid/negsoid/gameboid emulators? Is there a way to get in touch with the developer to see if he's working on, or planning on working on, new versions to handle the lack of a keyboard?

I will be creating my first application and if I want it to be backwards compatible with Gingerbread (according to androidtapp.com/android-platform-stats-jelly-bean-nudges-ice-cream-sandwich-gingerbread-dips Gingerbread is still widely used). If I choose to build against API level for Jelly Bean, would it be backwards compatible? Or do I need to choose an API level for Gingerbread?

I'm pretty new to Android, and I had some questions that I've had trouble getting answered via the web. I have done a few searches, but I'm not sure how to word my question, either. So I apologize if this has already been covered somewhere...but here it goes. I was wanting to know how the Android handles application versions/ updates. Specifically, does an update blow away my database? Is there a way to preserve the users' settings as well?

I'm sure there is a learning curve to the HTC/Android keyboard. I have an iPod Touch so I feel I have some bad habits to break. While typing fast I find I often miss the space key, (I hit the space but it does not register.) Upon closer examination I realized it has everything to do with lack of multi-touch. If my left thumb is not off the last key fast enough the space bar will not be registered with my right. (if that makes sense.)I'm definitely loving the extra space and I feel like I'm just one hang-up away from being a very fast typer.

Is anyone else annoyed that the symbol is omitted from the alt keyboard but not the $. It'd be good if when configuring the location they were then swapped around; save me digging for it in '123', then page 2.

I can't figure this out. Some apps have a EditText (textbox) which, when you touch it and it brings up the on-screen keyboard, the keyboard has a "Search" button instead of an enter key.I want to implement this. How can I implement that Search button and detect press of the Search button?

I've recently bought a HTC Wildfire and absolutely loved it and the concept of android. But as a long-time computer user the seeming lack of security is freaking me out a bit.I've read the guidelines about what services and application has access to, but just about every single application asks for access to things that are worrying. So it's mostly a matter of install and pray. The advice is, to listen to android community feedback about particular applications. Obviously some applications have become well known and legitimate. But unless I'm mistaken, there doesn't seem to be any way to find out if any application is Malware.the only way a person would know, is if they had their identity stolen, their passwords stolen, or money stolen from their bank account.

first of all I don't know if it is HTC's fault of Android's fault. I think it is Android's fault, Ok, yesterday my girlfriend send me SMS. As you all know that the little led flashes for a couple of minutes and then switches off. Hence, I missed that SMS. I was in a meeting So I came from the meeting, took all my gear and left in hurry because I didn't want anyone to stop me and start talking about yada yada yada on my way back to gym. Hence, I didn't check my SMS. She called me which I failed to see as I was in gym and then in shower. Then I went out with buddies to local bar. She tried to send me SMS again which I again failed to see. Now at 21:00, she arrived unexpectedly at my home when I just arrived back a couple of minutes before. Long story short, I was being interrogated that why I didn't see her missed call and missed SMS? As I was aware of lack of SMS/missed call notification, I decided not to tell the truth as she probably wouldn't understand. Fortunately, I had this broken phone prank installed in my phone which I ran and showed her that my phone was broken. I had some stone age Samsung before (BGH-100 or something) which wouldn't shut up till I would see the message. I also had Eten M700 whose led will keep blinking like a nagging wife till I would see the screen.Tell me how can I solve this problem? how to make that tiny little led keep blinking till I see the SMS or I see the missed call? Also, how can I make phone "beep" about missed SMS after every 5 minutes? I am afraid that us men are going to face a lot of interrogations from their lovers at home.

I find it amusing how many Senseless ROMS are popping up. The majority of all ROMS thus far are Senseless and I don't really get it. The main reason I sold my MotoDroid to get the HTC Incredible was for SenseUI and now everybody is wanting to ditch it. I need more Sense ROMs to play with and theres just nothing to choose from. SO I figured I would start a poll and see if I am the only one. So is it a Sense or Senseless ROM preference?

First time poster as I'm only just preparing myself for my first Android mobile I'm considering purchasing the HTC Tattoo, but one thing has me worried. In all the reviews I read they note the lack of apps on Android Market for the Tattoo, due to it's lower resolution - is this still an issue? I've read numerous reports stating the issue has been fixed but I'm not quite sure what to believe.

Did you see that Bell wireless is discontinuing their HTC Legend phones because of screen shortages. They are not taking any more orders for Legends'. Hmmmm.... makes me wonder how long before our incredible Incredibles' follow. We could soon all be owners of a very rare breed though! Might increase re-sale value.

Why are accessories so scarce.Eris has been out since 11/6.You would figure at least batteries and charging docks would be available. Also with the eris just being a re-branded hero, you would think there would be abundance of accessories.I can understand the droid, because its a completely new device.I know I could just do my research and find out what batteries and docks are compatible, but i don't think i should have to.When i bought the samsung omnia i had no problem finding batteries and docks. It seems like it was a rushed launch, but they been talking about this since the beginning of the year.

I have been agonizing for a month between the X and the Dinc. Up until last night, I still had no idea which one I was going to buy. I liked the video capabilities of the X, but from everything I'd read motoblur sucks. Also, for some strange reason I was hung up on the Dinc's lack of a dedicated camera button. I ordered my Dinc at 3 pm today, and I'm pleased to say it will be here by 3pm tomorrow. At which point I'm going to run over my Blackberry 8900 with my car.

I had the Fascinate when it was first launched had some issues with it (probably just a bad phone) not wanting to risk it I exchanged it for a DX. Well long story short the locked bootloader is killing me. Didn't think it was going to bother me, but it does. So to the point. I didn't have the phone long enough to research the problem, but are any of you guys having problems with lack of internal memory? More specifically, after installing the lag fix. Maybe the original I installed was super huge, but it left me with hardly any memory for apps.

My battery has never been worse since upgrading to Froyo. I don't use an auto task killer but I did use SystemPanel to manually close applications once in awhile. Now that I can't kill tasks easily, I just let everything run to see how it would turn out. I'm not saying the battery life is horrible, but it is noticeably worse now. I realize users experience will vary based on how many applications they have installed and running. I have not installed any new applications since Froyo.

"Windows Phone and XNA. Nightmare is real. What we do with that ?" http://groups.google. com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa.M$ just yesterday announced over 50 games for his Windows Phone 7 platform: http://www.engadget.com/2010 /08/16/xbox-live-launch-titles-for-window.Till this day, I was convinced, WP7 will die. But now, with Xbox Live network and really serious and great developers game support, I can tell, Android with its crappy games is going DOWN on this field. Some of you have say, that real android gaming framework is not necessary. I think, in 3 - 5 months, M$'s WP7 will beat Android in gaming. This is the price for ignorance of your enemy potential. I'm afraid, Google will create gaming framework, when it will be just too late. Games ARE so important. Windows wins all battles, mainly becuase of games. Every osx/linux fan can tell you this.

First, am I the only one who really is missing out on so much because of the lack of flash? Apart from YouTube, I can't watch anything that involves a video, and for me, that's quite a lot. Any latest news? I did ask before and I was told something about when it gets rolled out isn't the same as when we can actually use it. Can anyone elaborate? Also, when a webpage automatically changes to mobile friendly (e.g. ITV.com) and doesn't have the option that you normally find at the bottom of the page to change to desktop version, is there anyway to change it?

For those of you that are familiar with better keyboard. I was wondering about an easy way to switch from the t9 keyboard to the regular qwerty keyboard. I was under the impression that swiping left would toggle between the 2 but all that does is bring me to the numbers and symbols keyboard. I've been changing back and forth to the android keyboard because its faster than going into the better keyboard settings.

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.

How can I publish two versions of my app without changing the package name, so that users may upgrade to either version, one for Anroid 1.5 and one for Android 1.6 ? I want to offer new features requiring Android 1.6 as soon as possible, but not all users will have upgraded to Android 1.6.

The requirement is totally simple: I want to have a lite and pro version of an app. There is a little bit of difference between those two apps, but they are 99% identically. Unfortunately it seems that the best choice is to really treat this as two projects that are one and the same and copy over the source code and assets from one to the other. The Android Manifest file must be different, because the Android Market - for some reason - makes the implementation's package name the ID. Working around this ID issue the straight forward approach would be to have a third project with the common code that exports its code, libraries and in a best case scenario also the ressources to the other two objects. Unfortunately this doesn't work. Only the actual Android projects generate the R.class and so the common project would need to be dependent on it..

I can run my application on 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 emulator and on a 1.5 device without any problems. But some of my users are reporting force close and strange menu entries (see the attachment) using 1.6 and higher version devices.
This screen should look like this:
http://www.taypo.com/blog/WindowsLiveWriter/TurkceKlavye0.7_6F1/settings_0.7_2.png
And the code that generates this screen is:

I want to use the same eclipse project to maintain only one source code (or two projects that refer to a generic project). My problem is that the names of the package have to be different on the market (eg: my.android.app.lite and my.android.app.pro). If the package names are differents, the generated java ressource files are differents (eg: my.android.app.lite.R.java and my.android.app.pro.R.java). So, the source files must point to differents R files according to the version (pro or lite) and I have to change all the import...
