Android :: Is Network Slower When Screen Is Blacked Out?

Oct 8, 2009

I have an app that keeps pulling data from the network. I noticed that my downloading speed seems to have slowed down if I let the phone's screen to black out.Is this true? Is there a way to tell Android "keep using full network speed even when screen is blacked out"?

General :: HTC Desire HD Slower For Some Time When Screen Unlocked

Mar 12, 2012

I'm using the Oxygen ROM on an HTC Desire HD. When I leave my phone alone for a while and come back to unlock it, performance is often slow for 20 seconds to the point where swiping between launcher screens is sluggish. After this time it goes right back up to normal speeds.

Is this possibly related to the CPU settings in my ROM? The settings are available governors - interactive, min CPU - 245MHz, max CPU 1024 MHz. My guess is that when the phone's idle it goes down to 245MHz and takes a while to get back up to regular speeds. Am I looking in the right place and how much would increasing min CPU frequency affect my battery life?

HTC Desire HD :: Mobile Network Widget - Switching Off/on Mobile Network Setting From Home Screen

Oct 29, 2010

I have been trying to find a way of quickly switching off/on the Mobile Network setting from the home screen. When searching Google there's loads of pages stating that it is an HTC Widget that can be added. I have checked all the widgets on the Desire HD and cannot seem to find it anywhere. I am using an unbranded handset.

The Desire HD manual even states "You can also add widgets that allow you to quickly switch on or off certain settings of your phone, such as Wi-Fi, Mobile Network...".

Does anyone else with an HD handset have this widget ?

Android :: Android To Open Network Connection On Specified Network Interface - Network Type

Mar 6, 2009

I have been looking at the ConnectivityManager class documented at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManage... .

I would like to know if an Android application can open a network connection (socket) on a specified network interface [on a device supporting multiple network interface types WiFi, Cellular, WiMax etc] ? I am looking for the capability for an application to open a socket on a given type of network for example over WiFi network or over 3G Cellular Data network.

If this is possible in Android, how would I code this requirement within the API Framework ? The ConnectivityManager enables an application to learn about available network connections and currently categorises them as either TYPE_WIFI or TYPE_MOBILE.

There is a member function in the ConnectivityManager class called requestRouteToHost(int, int) [url] which "Ensure that a network route exists to deliver traffic to the specified host via the specified network interface. An attempt to add a route that already exists is ignored, but treated as successful." Sounds like this would install an IP routing table entry to reach a given host via a specified network interface type (WiFi or Mobile). After calling this would it be sufficient for an application to open a socket and connect to the desired destination address ?

Or perhaps the application needs to bind() a socket to a local address of a network interface of the desired type (WiFi or Mobile) Or by setting a socket-level socket option of SO_DONTROUTE ?

Android :: Detecting Slow Or Unavailable Network And Black Screen

Jul 21, 2010

My application for the most part prefers to be online, I have of course added an offline mode so that it works perfectly well when not attached and then re-syncs when connected again.I do, however, have an issue with the initial start of the main activity "black screening" on me while (i assume) it is waiting on a TCP timeout. It would be nice to query and skip the download step if the network is super slow.

Android :: Zooming - Google Maps Becomes Slower

Feb 15, 2010

We have developed a GPS based app in which it record the user routes and show it on the map.......but Panning around on the map when reviewing my route is painfully slow, it takes at least 4 or 5 seconds for the map to respond the finger swipes......

Overridden the onDraw() method and drawing the lines to show the routes whenever we zoom on the map, the lat-long is again drawn by calling onDraw()(Overridden) method , which has the geopoints with lat- lon values, and thus it becomes very slower process to display the map .. is there any better way to do this so that panning becomes faster as in "MyTracks"

Following is the code to draw the routes on map...........please look into it and guide me how can i make it more efficient so that the panning and zooming works well......

Android :: External Libraries Make Apps Slower?

Aug 10, 2010

I am building an app that scrapes information from web pages. To do that I have chosen to use an HTML scraper called J soup because it's so simple to use. Jsoup is also dependent on Apache Commons Lang library. (Together they make up a total of 385kB ). So Jsoup will be used to Download the page and parse it. My question is if the use of these simplifying libraries, instead of using Androids built-in libraries, will make my app slower? (in terms of downloading data and parsing). I was thinking that the internal libraries would be optimized for Android.

Android : Performance Issue - Dalvik VM Is 20x Slower Than Most Modern Java VMs

Jan 6, 2010

I'm writing a processing intensive digital sound processing app (requires numerous (50,000) Fast Fourier Transforms - FFT). This challenge led me to perform basic performance tests of Android running on an HTC Hero.

The results show the Dalvik VM to be >20 times slower than a modern JIT-enabled JVM running J2ME and 25-50 times slower than a C program performing the same operations on a similarly powered mobile phone. For example, this simple iteration over an empty method 2 million times takes 1.4 seconds even though it doesn't do anything. The same iteration is performed in milliseconds by a C program and about 100ms on a modern JVM. Code...

HTC EVO 4G :: Evo Slower Than Aircard

Jun 8, 2010

I'm currently testing weather I want to drop my aircard for the EVO, but I'm noticing the speeds and ping times are lower on the EVO.Same network, same time, same location , same speed test (speedtest.net), different devices. Is there some throttling going on? I've cracked 1mb only twice on the evo while the aircard has done it nearly every time i've checked in the last two years.pingtimes are horrible in the 300's while my aircard is at 117 or so usually. This is a killer for my ps3 gaming. Or could this just be the fact on the evo app we can't pic the servers and maybe its using a bad one or its far away.Hopefully this issue will be resolved before my 30 days are up. More money for slower speeds? I like new stuff but carrying around a phone isn't worth losing netflix and ps3 gaming.

HTC Eris :: I Rooted My Phone Is Slower

Aug 8, 2010

About a week ago I rooted my phone. Mind you, I didn't have HUGE lag issues like most before I rooted. Just the minor complaints that most had.I'm currently running Plain Jane v2 with a2sd and OC. I'm clocking at 710/528, yet my phone is laggier than ever. I'm at my wits end trying to get this phone to work at a substantial speed before I go off to college. At some points my phone seems really super-snappy, but those moments are short lived.Linpack averages that my MFLOPS is about 0.96 at all times. I read that the standard for the eris is 3.0, and I'm unsure why my phone is running this slow.Does someone know some tricks, or a rom that may help my phone out? I'm dying to just have something to make my phone usable. Thanks a ton.

Ive tried to tweak settings in the router and no change. I even did a factory reset on the router and still same thing.

Also whenever i power it up, some app icons on homescreens show as the default android icon and not the app icon, after a few seconds and changing homescreens then the app icons appear as it should, i didnt see this before the reset?

Should i ignore this as its not to big a deal or do something about it?

Last question,

HTC EVO 4G :: Browser Slower On Custom Kernels

Yes i have tried multiple kernels with the same results, i wonder why this is the case, i love the features (unlocked fps/Over-under clocking) of some of the custom kernels , but losing 7-8 seconds is rather annoying especially on 3G. Running Froyo btw.
