Android :: External Libraries Make Apps Slower?
Aug 10, 2010
I am building an app that scrapes information from web pages. To do that I have chosen to use an HTML scraper called J soup because it's so simple to use. Jsoup is also dependent on Apache Commons Lang library. (Together they make up a total of 385kB ). So Jsoup will be used to Download the page and parse it. My question is if the use of these simplifying libraries, instead of using Androids built-in libraries, will make my app slower? (in terms of downloading data and parsing). I was thinking that the internal libraries would be optimized for Android.

Will external library (for parsing JSON) work on 1.5 if it works on 2.1? So are libraries limited by android version? If yes, why?

I have a project that I would like to add external libraries to (and have them packaged with the application) but I am not sure it is happening. I read on this link:
http://developer.android.com/intl/fr/guide/appendix/faq/commontasks.html. how to, but they do not show up in any of the /data/data/project directories. Does anyone know how I can confirm that the libraries were in fact added to the project for use at runtime?

I'm trying to build an Android project that has some dependencies. The jar files are in the lib/ directory. I can build the project by adding those jar file to my class path, but of course it Force Closes in the emulator because those libraries aren't present. I'm doing this from the command line with ant (not in eclipse). How can I make it include those libraries in the apk from the command line?

I have an existing project that builds fine using my IDE.I'd like to use the "android update" command to generate an ant buildfile for this project. The buildfile is generated fine, but the build fails because it's not building with some jarfiles I have in my libs directory.I'd like to figure out the proper way to tell ant to build with some external jar files in my libs directory. How should I do this? Is it a property in build.properties? Do I need to modify build.xml somehow? Or is there a different solution entirely?

Does underclocking make video run slower? i'm on the htc inspire with Absolution v3.7. i undervolted it aggressively to -75. i also underclocked it to 384. but i dont think underclocking is the cause since i had underclocked this phone with virtuous unity to 384 and videos played well. anyway, i noticed with netflix, video runs slow every 4 minutes then normal again.

I would like to know is if filling up my phones storage is going to make it run slower? I had 5 movies on my 8g microSDHC card. I decided to move them to my phones storage since nothing really uses that storage. The movies play great from both the phones storage and the SD card, but it felt like my phone was running a little slower once I did this. Is this just in my head or will my phone really run slower with its storage almost full? My phones settings state that the total space of the storage is 6.6GB and the avialable space is no 1.57GB.

I'm starting with android, and the app I'm developing is gonna need custom widgets look (glossy buttons, animated backgrounds etc.),I've googled for any external libraries to achieve this and did not find anything. let me guess, the only way to this is by painly extending base view classes and overriding onDraw etc?

I have purchased iball slide 3G 7271 ( 3G model ) (Android version 4.0.4) in India. Available Interneal SD memory 2GB.I have external micro SD card slot expandable upto 32GB.
I have downloaded and installed many games in it...but now whenever I try to download new ones , it says "INSUFFICIENT SD MEMORY"
In order to use my external SD card for installing the games and other things....
I have gone through Google search and found ""FolderMount "" software and downloaded to my tab.
I have installed also. It was successful.when I open FolderMount, it says......""serching for root "" ( with one EXIT button to cancel)....and doing nothing beyond that.

I planning to buy a wifi-only 7" tablet, but the tablet support some external 3G/EVDO modem to connect to the internet. So, is there -by any chances- a way to make a call or send a sms via external modem?
I've seen this possible on "ipod to iphone conversion" with custom dialer and sms app...

I am new to android and I got myself a Micromax A110 running on android ics with 2 gb of internal SD card memory the internal memory just isn't enough for installing heavy games and storing and downloading large videos and music, so I added a 32 gb external micro SD card.. the card shows in my file manager and its contents are accessible, most apps like ttpod, ttorrent, vlc, chrome etc don't detect my external card. They only access the contents of my internal SD card, download to it.. I can't set the default directory to the external card...
When I installed nfs most wanted to my phone, it asked me to free up data in my SD card or insert another one as there was no space left due to obvious reasons of my internal SD card being filled with other apps.. I uninstalled and reinstalled it after setting the default storage location to the external storage... I found that the game installed in the internal storage this time and on startup, it gave the same message..
Is it a common problem or a limitation to the OS? Does my phone needs to be rooted for the purpose?

When I setup my A100 (running the ICS OTA update), I didn't have an SD card installed. It created it's own "fake" sdcard which applications use.
Now that I've added a real external sdcard, I can't get the applications to use that for their data instead of the "fake" location.
I've copied everything from the "fake" location to the new sdcard.
I suspect the problem is that the new, real sd card is called "external_sd" and the old, "fake" location is called "sdcard".
Do I need to reinstall those applications?
I am NOT trying to move applications to the external SD card; I just wants apps that normally store data there to do so instead of in the "fake" location.
Also, I am not rooted.

I'm running JB 4.1.2 and I've pretty much used up all the internal phone storage with installing games and other apps. I have an 8MB external SD with nothing on it and I'm basically wanting to transfer either the whole of android onto it if thats possible, or alternatively if thats not possible then just the larger files and folders like game data (for example GTA vice city obb takes up a whopping 1.5gb alone).

I have MIUI v5 installed on Tipo. Apps like Sidebar, NinjaSMS, JuiceDefender do not work, start. Ninja sms app starts, but sms does not produce popup. Sidebar when opened via configuration menu, works, but as soon as I exit the configuration, it ends as well. Same for juice defender. It simple does not work. Other applications work very well...
I suspect something to do with the permission manager or setting.

We have developed a GPS based app in which it record the user routes and show it on the map.......but Panning around on the map when reviewing my route is painfully slow, it takes at least 4 or 5 seconds for the map to respond the finger swipes......
Overridden the onDraw() method and drawing the lines to show the routes whenever we zoom on the map, the lat-long is again drawn by calling onDraw()(Overridden) method , which has the geopoints with lat- lon values, and thus it becomes very slower process to display the map .. is there any better way to do this so that panning becomes faster as in "MyTracks"
Following is the code to draw the routes on map...........please look into it and guide me how can i make it more efficient so that the panning and zooming works well......

I am thinking about converting my web apps into Android apps to reach the Android market. I do not have an Android phone. Can someone tell me how I can possibly get a Google developer phone (other than going to Google I/O, etc)?
I realize this is somewhat of a ridiculous request but I have read blogs of people being enticed by google and offered a free phone to convert their web apps into Android apps. So I figure there is no harm in asking.
I am also wondering what the cost of the developer phone is once you pay your $25 to enter the android market place as a developer through the developer account.
