View 3 RepliesThe service providers in my country are charging for the MBs I downloaded in my GPRS/EDGE connection. So, whenever I want to disable the GPRS, I just change my default APN to something wrong and then correct it when I want to enable it again. I couldn't find another way to enable/disable. I think,Android team assumed that only 3G users with a good data plan only would use this phone. Anyway, I just want to develop an application which can do that automatically for me. However; I couldn't find how to change the APN settings in the docs. but I couldn't find how to use it. Could you please help me? Any alternative ways and/or suggestions are welcome.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working on some data transmission program and current it works alright on WIFI connection.
However, I understand that if I am in an environment where there are both 3G and WIFI coverage... the phone will (by default) be turned onto the WIFI network connection.
However, if for some reasons, I wish to be connected directly to 3G (e.g. 3G is more stable in public WIFI area).... is it possible to do so programatically on the Android phone? If i'm not wrong, it's possible using the ConnectionManager API, am I right?
May i ask if anyone has done something like that and don't mind sharing the code snippets to do so , or point me to the right direction for this?
Don't know how to start , so here goes. I got my Desire a few days ago and have been slowly playing around with it. Any way whilst messing about on the internet I have noticed that I don't have a "G" "3G" indicator for my connection . I only have a "H".
Which is best...is one better than the other? I had a Nokia E71 and was more or less always connected via "3G".
I haven't changed networks, still with 3.
Have finally received my X10 and must say am very impressed with it on the whole.Am finding it fast and responsive but do get the occassional need to tap the selection again and have also experienced the 'a' issue with the keyboard.
Have got a few questions which hopefully you guys can help with as Android is all new to me having come from Windows Mobile:
*Is there a way to disable the GPRS connection as it seems to be continuously connected or is this normal with Android?
*Do you guys know of a GPRS data app that can monitor my internet usage?
*Am going to purchase 'Betterkeyboard' from the Marketplace but if I was to factory reset the handset would I be able to download the app without paying again.
still scratching the surface of Android and the X10 so haven't come across the common complaints yet e.g. low sound both incall and ring tone...
Newbie question here:
My internet conection is painfully slow. when I have the mobile network switched on a get a G with two arrows showing GPRS?
Is this correct, should I not see a 3G with two arrows? I am with O2UK.
Can some one help me with this. because i haven't found a way to do so.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't have a Desire, but will be getting possibly the Desire HD or the next big release here in Europe. Anyway im planning on using a pay as you go plan, so im not going to have 3G. I'll mainly be using wifi.
So i just wanted to know if its possible to download any data using GPRS (i believe its called). Its really slow, but i could use it to check email and whatnot. Does the Desire allow this, or should u be on either wifi or 3G for it to work?
I have a use case in my application, where after certain point, I need to associate an data with an activity. So whenever an intent with an action and the data type is fired, my activity can be opened. I know that it is possible to associate a data type with an activity statically via AndroidManifest.xml.
Is it possible to register the data type for an activity dynamically and programatically?
What's the technical term for being able to have voice connection and data connection simultaneously? Like AT&T was promoting heavily for a while.Apparently, the new T-Mobile Vibrant has this capability. A friend got one and was accessing the web while talking to me, double jealous now.I have benn lusting after the Verizon version, Fascinate, and wondering if there is any chance it will as well.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThere have been numerous times when people have tried to phone me and it's gone straight to voicemail. I know when using GPRS you can't use voice and data at the same time but I can't figure out what's using the data stream. I only have the weather application which updates every 3 hours but even when it's not due an update this issue has occurred. Can anyone suggest how to figure out what's using data? The only fix I can think of is to turn off Internet while in a GPRS area assuming the problem is a clash of data / voice.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI usually have the Mobile network turned off, to save the battery but mostly because I don't want to use my limited data allotment.
Today I was out about 60 miles away from home; I had a decent cellular connection, no Wi-Fi because I was out of range and no data because it was turned off...or so I thought.
Without me turning anything on There it was the "H" for HPSA was in the status bar; occasionally sending and receiving data.
I did use the GPS for a while and I would have thought that if it needed a data connection a warning would have popped up.
I tried the obvious, turning on and off the Mobile network, but the "H" remained.
One back in the city the "H" remained, the only way to reset my phone was to reboot.
I have a Motorola 720 blue tooth earpieces. It pairs with no problem, and I can answer calls with it.I press the call button, get two beeps, and no reaction from the phone.Did I miss something in setup? Or will the Incredible not do this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedImagine the situation that Any data plan is not activated and as soon as u enable the data connection hundereds of thing in android want to connect to internet and when u disable the data connection again . Ur money is deducted.
Now u will ask me if i dont have a data plan why i enable the data connection.?
So here is the thing I want the data connection to be enabled so that i can open free site like facebook on Opera Mini.
So is there any way so that i can enable the data connection but my phone does not connect to internet to itself but i control which app connects. In my case opera mini.
My Motorola has begun to behave strangely. I think they lost the battery too quickly, so I have yesterday installed Netcounter and a Task Manager to see what it may be due.
Since yesterday, it downloaded 53 MB of data, including 28 MB today. It's too much, because I have hardly used it for anything but standby. There obviously mail pops up on it, but I read them on my PC. I have not used Google Maps, Web browsing or other things.
WiFi is off, but my battery is at 50% (this morning at 7:30 am, it was at 100% - now 4 hours later it's 50%).
Last night the Milestone was warm on the backside, but not where the battery is placed, but closer to where the sender/radio is placed.
Conclusion: Some programs must be running all the time,
1 hour ago I closed all programs using Task Manager.
But now, all these apps seems to be running (according to task manager):
*Netcounter
Phone Portal
Calendar
*Handcent SMS
**Alarm Clock
Music
Settings
Email (ikke google mail)
Maps
Media Gallery
Bluetooth file transfer
Smart Alarm clock
Messaging
Facebook (jeg bruger ikke facebook widget)
MyBackup
Corporate calendar (ikke google kalenderen, men en kalender der kan synkronisere med outlook)
**CalWidget
*Gmail
AK Notepad
Photoshop.com mobile
Practically all programs. I have only used programs marked *
** = programs I can understand if they're running, i.e. widgets
Why does all my programs start? And which are using the Internet?
I looked at settings -> about phone -> battery usage:
android.process.acore: 71%
Facebook: 6%
display 5%
Android system 5%
Phone idle 4%
Cell standby 3%
Google 3%
Android os 2%
Cell Standby should be >90% since I've not using the phone today.
Any ideas? Should I erase all and restart? Or is it because I have not updated yet (still running the 2.0 version from out of the box)
I've got my Desire to allow background sync and auto sync etc, but I was wondering if there was an app that anyone knew of that would tell me which application has been using the data connection and for how long etc? A bit like the battery stats that says which application has been using the battery but for data connection if you see what I mean.
I've seen a few apps that seem to give an overall usage figure so you can track how much data you're downloading in a month but nothing per app.I originally posted this in the HTC Desire section but I think this section is more appropriate, not sure how to move a post so have done it again. Sorry if that's a problem.
Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to transfer data between 2 applications( one running on Android Phone and another application running on PC) via USB connection? If yes then please tell me the what are the settings to be done.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI saw this commercial the other day for the iPhone where they were saying how the iPhone can look up stuff on a map and lookup restuarant info on the web all while on a phone call. I thought, that's silly, can't every smart phone do that? I had never tried it before on my Hero, so tonight I just did a simple test, where I was on the phone and tried to look up some info on the web. No go. There was no data connection. Boy was I not happy about that. Is that a function of the OS (v1.5), or the network I'm on (Sprint)? It seems like its pretty basic that I should be able to be on a phone call AND look something up at the same time, just like the iPhone commercial. Or am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting somewhere?

I have an unlimited data plan through T-Mobile. I am using my phone in the United States, West Coast. The issue I am having is when I am using the Tethering for root user and I receive or send a call, my connection seems to pause. This also causes web pages to not load and the 3G or E icon goes away from the Status bar at the top of the screen. Does anyone know of a way for me to have the data connection continue when a cell call comes in?
This was working until today on wife's phone. Now it just says mobile data state disconnected. All shes done is installed a load of new apps.Is it possible that a bad app can screw the mobile data connection?Or could it be faulty phone?Tried the sim in another phone and data works fine so its not the network or sim.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a scenario where I need to control how many retries are allowed per hour for data connection establishment in case of failure? How can this be achieved? There is something like nextReconnectDelay in GsmDataConnectionTracker.java, but can't figure out how to reconfigure this so as to reduce number of reconnection attempts? Also is there any settings so that after n retries of failed 3G data call, Android waits for x hours to initiate next connection.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a server application listening on port 5001 on an anroid dev phone. The client application running on my laptop tries to send data to the server application.
The client can successfully connect and send data to the server machine when the phone has wifi enabled. The command to do this is - iperf -c <ip address of wifi interface>
But when I enable the 3G connection and try to send data then it fails. iperf -c <ip address of the 3G interface>
I cannot even ping the <ip address of the 3G interface>. Is there any port blocking enforced in case of external 3G network connection. Can anyone please tell me how can I send data to the server application on 3G network. Is there any specific port on which the server application should be listening??
I've been trying to wrap my head around this and it's probably an obvious answer but why can't I dial out using my GV number unless I have a data connection active? Per Google and from what I can see, no VoIP is being used and it seems to me when I have a data connection and use GV to dial out it just dials a Google number first. I'd think the call would be made to GV, GV would patch the call through to the person being called and pass on the GV caller ID number. So why does the app need to have a data connection to work?
