Android :: How To Enable / Disable GPRS / EDGE Data Connection?
Apr 16, 2009
The service providers in my country are charging for the MBs I downloaded in my GPRS/EDGE connection. So, whenever I want to disable the GPRS, I just change my default APN to something wrong and then correct it when I want to enable it again. I couldn't find another way to enable/disable. I think,Android team assumed that only 3G users with a good data plan only would use this phone. Anyway, I just want to develop an application which can do that automatically for me. However; I couldn't find how to change the APN settings in the docs. but I couldn't find how to use it. Could you please help me? Any alternative ways and/or suggestions are welcome.

Principally to save battery charge, i need to find an application or a method that automatically shut down data connection when i lock the screen and resume it when i unlock the screen.
I've tried many of the most popular software that do this, but, with dual sim phone, they are able to shut down data connection but not to startup.

Have finally received my X10 and must say am very impressed with it on the whole.Am finding it fast and responsive but do get the occassional need to tap the selection again and have also experienced the 'a' issue with the keyboard.
Have got a few questions which hopefully you guys can help with as Android is all new to me having come from Windows Mobile:
*Is there a way to disable the GPRS connection as it seems to be continuously connected or is this normal with Android?
*Do you guys know of a GPRS data app that can monitor my internet usage?
*Am going to purchase 'Betterkeyboard' from the Marketplace but if I was to factory reset the handset would I be able to download the app without paying again.
still scratching the surface of Android and the X10 so haven't come across the common complaints yet e.g. low sound both incall and ring tone...

I have recently upgraded to the HTC DESIRE on o2, So far all I have seen is the "G" = GPRS, so far I have not seen 3G, E, or the HDPSA or what ever it is :-). Does o2 support anything else but "G" on this handset etc etc, or is my phone faulty ? I live in the UK and so far today I cant even use my internet - O2 have said there are having issues with 3G but didnt say where in the UK or maybe this is Nation Wide ?

I am currently in China and therefor run a VPN on my PC to connect to the outside world, I would also like to run the same VPN (PPTP) on my android. I can connect via VPN if I am using WiFi but when I try to connect over GPRS/Edge I can't get any connectivity. All web pages load with the standard "web page not available" and apps, eg. the market place, won't connect either. I would have thought that if it was a carrier issue (CMCC) I wouldn't be able to connect to the VPN in the first place. So is this a Android issue, a setup issue or a carrier issue? And can you actuality run a VPN over GPRS om Android?

Is there any app or some thing like that, that I could use it to turn on mobile Internet 2G (EDGE/GPRS) or 3G (UMTS/HSDPA). I now turn off/on mobile Internet with Toggle Data widget, that changes APN type to "-" so it can't work. I am asking this because i use GPS tracker app. And I can turn it on with sms with code: "gps_tracker_start But if i want to report my location I need to be connected to Internet. So I could see my android phone even if it is not connected to internee. So is there any option to turn on mobile Internet remotely?

I need to find a way to enable / disable mobile data (the thing you can manually enable / disable in Settings->Wireless->Mobile Network (android 2.1)But I can't find any API for that. For WIFI, there's a method setWifiEnabled(boolean) on the class WifiManager. But I can't find anything like that for the data network... no method for this on TelephonyManager or ConnectivityManager.Isn't it possible to programmatically enable / disable mobile data?

I want, and I have for a while been willing to, disable and enable DATA (2g, 3g, whatever) with a long press of the search button. And I mean only long-pressing it, NOT opening an app with it and disable it from the app (doesn't make any sense, otherwise one would press the HOME button and disable it from a widget there).

Just installed Galaxo 1.6.3.4, everything works great, except that gprs/edge capabilities seem to be switched off? They used to work before the root. I can use wifi, but cannot get any data traffic outside wifi areas.

I want to develop an application that disable the Background Data (new feature in Android 1.5) and Auto Sync and then enable GPRS/EDGE connection and vice versa.
I figured out how to enable/disable GPRS/EDGE by changing the APN settings. (weird solution. However; Android developers couldn't think a user may want to disable GPRS/EDGE) But, I couldn't find a way to enable/disable Auto Sync and Background data.
I investigated the Android code and as I understood, the Sync operation is an intend. So, I wanted to reach with putExtra to the intend and trigger the enabling/disabling. But; I couldn't find the correct keyword.

As Nexus One is the only model which has already "partly" updated to Froyo,Before Froyo, if I wanna enable/disable mobile data usage, I used a passive way, changing the APN server setting, to fool the system so it couldn't connect. In Froyo, there is a new option under Setings -> Wireless & Network Settings -> Mobile Networks called Data enabled/disabled, which is a much direct approach than changing the APN.But up to today, I've yet to see a widget which targets at this option. Currently I hv made a 3G shortcut to that setting page on to my home screen. Really hope there will be a toggle widget instead! So how do u guys enable/disable data usage at the moment without a handy widget on Froyo?

I am unable to use Gtalk, gmail, Maps, Market, Email (all pre installed) using GPRS/EDGE (Vodafone Live) on my Milestone. But All of these works with Wi-Fi connection. I installed Meeboo Messanger, this is also not working with GPRS/EDGE.
I called Motorola Customer care, they are saying that I have to take a DataPlan from Vodafone and should ask Vodafone to activate all GPRS/EDGE settings on my mobile. So I took a DataPlan (200 Rs. 100 MB), Vodafone People are saying that all available setting are already activated on my cell. But I am still unable to use any of them above. Every time no network connection found error is coming.

Don't know how to start , so here goes. I got my Desire a few days ago and have been slowly playing around with it. Any way whilst messing about on the internet I have noticed that I don't have a "G" "3G" indicator for my connection . I only have a "H".
Which is best...is one better than the other? I had a Nokia E71 and was more or less always connected via "3G".
I haven't changed networks, still with 3.

I don't have a Desire, but will be getting possibly the Desire HD or the next big release here in Europe. Anyway im planning on using a pay as you go plan, so im not going to have 3G. I'll mainly be using wifi.
So i just wanted to know if its possible to download any data using GPRS (i believe its called). Its really slow, but i could use it to check email and whatnot. Does the Desire allow this, or should u be on either wifi or 3G for it to work?

Got my x10 mini pro this week and had to swallow three times as I'd not been exposed to android and expected a SE experience. I got the google sync to work without a problem, internet and facebook updates feeding into the timecape - great. I managed to upload my old phone's contacts onto my newly creates SE account on this website, great. Then on the x10 mini pro, I set up the sync using standard SE button, entered my details of this website, which created a default entry trying to get to sync.sonyericsson.com which I cannot change.
When I try to synchronize, (Internet connection def working), this immediately fails, does not even seem to try to connect to the sync server. Error message appears in the status bar: Could not synchronize: Sony Ericsson (which is the name of the default sync entry). I tried creating a sync entry using the SE portal, finding out the secret username/password. That got exactly the same instant response apparently not even trying.

According to the emulator docs, you should be able to enable/disable networking with the F8 key. I doesn't work for me and I'm trying to determine why.
I'm developing on OSX Leopard. I've also tried in a virtual Windows instance (Windows 2008 server running in Parallels). No luck in either case.
I've tried the obvious stuff like fn + F8, etc.
Should there be any sort of visual cue that networking has gone online or offline when F8 is pressed?
