It looks android starts data connection right after phone boots up and keeps the data connection until phone powers down.Is there any API to disable data connection or enable data connection?

The service providers in my country are charging for the MBs I downloaded in my GPRS/EDGE connection. So, whenever I want to disable the GPRS, I just change my default APN to something wrong and then correct it when I want to enable it again. I couldn't find another way to enable/disable. I think,Android team assumed that only 3G users with a good data plan only would use this phone. Anyway, I just want to develop an application which can do that automatically for me. However; I couldn't find how to change the APN settings in the docs. but I couldn't find how to use it. Could you please help me? Any alternative ways and/or suggestions are welcome.

Principally to save battery charge, i need to find an application or a method that automatically shut down data connection when i lock the screen and resume it when i unlock the screen.

I'm looking for a widget, that with one click of a button, it can restrict background data, disable auto-sync and enable mobile data, and when pressed again, enable WiFi, disable background restriction and enable auto-sync.
This function, no matter how trivial, would save time and effort.
Is there anything like this out there? Would something like this require root?

I've got my Desire to allow background sync and auto sync etc, but I was wondering if there was an app that anyone knew of that would tell me which application has been using the data connection and for how long etc? A bit like the battery stats that says which application has been using the battery but for data connection if you see what I mean.

I just got an EVO and it chews through the battery fairly quick. I downloaded JuiceDefender to manage my mobile data connection. That seems have worked out fairly well. However, the settings are just very restricted (even on the paid versions).As of right now I am trying to develop a much more customizable battery saving application. The main thing I am trying to do first be able to enable/disable the mobile data connection at will.The problem is I can't find any code snippets or articles on how to do this. The only thing I have found is the following. I don't know how accurate this is, but this was all I could piece together browsing developer.android.com.Looking at the phone info when JuiceDefender is running, I found that the GSRP network is getting turned on and off. This leaves me to believe it is possible to do it through code even though every page I find asking about this same issue says it cannot be done. The kicker is they all say to do it like APNDroid. Please someone give me some insight.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI saw this commercial the other day for the iPhone where they were saying how the iPhone can look up stuff on a map and lookup restuarant info on the web all while on a phone call. I thought, that's silly, can't every smart phone do that? I had never tried it before on my Hero, so tonight I just did a simple test, where I was on the phone and tried to look up some info on the web. No go. There was no data connection. Boy was I not happy about that. Is that a function of the OS (v1.5), or the network I'm on (Sprint)? It seems like its pretty basic that I should be able to be on a phone call AND look something up at the same time, just like the iPhone commercial. Or am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting somewhere?

And I mean only long-pressing it, NOT opening an app with it and disable it from the app (doesn't make any sense, otherwise one would press the HOME button and disable it from a widget there).

I have an unlimited data plan through T-Mobile. I am using my phone in the United States, West Coast. The issue I am having is when I am using the Tethering for root user and I receive or send a call, my connection seems to pause. This also causes web pages to not load and the 3G or E icon goes away from the Status bar at the top of the screen. Does anyone know of a way for me to have the data connection continue when a cell call comes in?
This was working until today on wife's phone.Now it just says mobile data state disconnected. All shes done is installed a load of new apps.Is it possible that a bad app can screw the mobile data connection?Or could it be faulty phone?Tried the sim in another phone and data works fine so its not the network or sim.

There is something like nextReconnectDelay in GsmDataConnectionTracker.java, but can't figure out how to reconfigure this so as to reduce number of reconnection attempts? Also is there any settings so that after n retries of failed 3G data call, Android waits for x hours to initiate next connection.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a server application listening on port 5001 on an anroid dev phone. The client application running on my laptop tries to send data to the server application.
The client can successfully connect and send data to the server machine when the phone has wifi enabled. The command to do this is - iperf -c <ip address of wifi interface>
But when I enable the 3G connection and try to send data then it fails. iperf -c <ip address of the 3G interface>
I cannot even ping the <ip address of the 3G interface>. Is there any port blocking enforced in case of external 3G network connection. Can anyone please tell me how can I send data to the server application on 3G network. Is there any specific port on which the server application should be listening??
I've been trying to wrap my head around this and it's probably an obvious answer but why can't I dial out using my GV number unless I have a data connection active? Per Google and from what I can see, no VoIP is being used and it seems to me when I have a data connection and use GV to dial out it just dials a Google number first. I'd think the call would be made to GV, GV would patch the call through to the person being called and pass on the GV caller ID number. So why does the app need to have a data connection to work?

The thing is that I have a Thread that manage the request with a while(!end) loop and in the end a Thread.sleep(500) that checks if there are new unhandled requests. As I read here [1] I know that this is not a good practice. And users have complain about ANR (app not responding) in several cases.
Knowing that obviously I want to refactor all the way my app manage the requests and I want to do that the best way. So, the question is; what is the best approach for doing this? A service? a broadcast receiver and send intents when I need a request to be handled?
When viewing sites with a lot of Flash ads like GameFAQs I get an annoying popup telling me that I have lost the data connection and the page could not be loaded. Only the ads are not loading, but I'd like a way to ignore or fix this.

Your phone needs to support Wireless Data Connection (Dun) Capabilities to use TomTom Plus Services. Can this be done soon? View 2 Replies View RelatedI know that unfortunately detecting and changing programmatically data connection (GPRS/UMTS) on vanilla Android is not possible, and the common workaround is to edit APN settings. This is hardly a nice solution. However on my device (Xperia X10) I have an additional setting near "data roaming", that allows to enable or disable MMS and data. I suppose that this is a personalization made by Sony Ericsson, and maybe even other vendors have something like this. Is there a way to access this setting?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI use HTC Desire (updated to Froyo) and at home Google Maps Navigation works great and I never worry about the data connection because I have a large data allowance each month. But I'm now in Germany for a few days and I don't really want to pay roaming rates. So, I find that I can of course use the hotel wifi to plot the route.
This can work but most of the time it doesn't. The problem is that the route is not downloaded (at least not completely) until the phone has a GPS fix. Usually this happens after I'm out of range of the wifi signal and so I have no route to navigate. Is there a way of downloading the route without needing the satellite fix to validate it? This would make life so much simpler!
Dear I have an app developed and deployed on my HTC mobile phone. I am able to debug this in eclipse with the USB driver SDK. The mobile phone appears now in the hardware manager ADB interface. I would now be able to send data through this USB connection to the mobilephone which my app is able to handle. I know some tethering software which does this, therefore there must be a way to communicate with user data and with my app.
