Android :: Register Data Type For An Activity Dynamically And Programatically?
Nov 9, 2010
I have a use case in my application, where after certain point, I need to associate an data with an activity. So whenever an intent with an action and the data type is fired, my activity can be opened. I know that it is possible to associate a data type with an activity statically via AndroidManifest.xml.
Is it possible to register the data type for an activity dynamically and programatically?

I use my file explorer a lot. It eliminates much of the "You have to put the files here" sort of requirement of many applications. And in many case - movie files for example - when you touch the file, it opens it in the appropriate application. There are exceptions like *.epub files. When I touch one, I get the famous "...does not support." message. So the question is, can I "register" Laputa (for example) to be the app to open *.epub files - Similar to the File Types dialog in Windows?I suppose this might require root access?

In Android, I am trying to make it so that the user downloads a font from the browser and I am able to view the font when downloaded. After multiple issues, I still have one lingering one: Registering the file type with the browser. When trying to download with the Emulator (2.1-u1), I get "Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone". Okay, so maybe its my manifest file. Updated with this:
<activity android:name=".MainActivity" android:label="MainActivity">
<intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN"/>
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER"/>
<catagory android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE"/>
<data android:scheme="http"/> <data android:scheme="https"/>
<data android:scheme="ftp"/> <data android:host="*"/>
<data android:mimeType="*/*"/> <data android:pathPattern=".*zip"/>
</intent-filter> </activity>
Went back to the browser, and fails again. Restart the Emulator, still fails. Note that I got this format from posts here.

The built-in barcode scanner application on Android (based, I think, on zxing) reads QR Codes and launches that data into an application based on the leading text. For example, "BEGIN:VCAL" might launch a calendar application; "http:" might launch a browser.How can I "register" my application so the OS (or the Barcode application) will call it for a specific type (i.e. leading characters) of QR Code text?

I want to register my application for files of a certain popular and well-documented MIME-type. The problem is that Android does not seem to recognize this MIME-type. The following sample code demonstrates this:
package com.example.helloandroid;
import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.util.Log; import android.widget.TextView;
public class HelloAndroid extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); TextView tv = new TextView(this); tv.setText("Hello, Android"); setContentView(tv); String extn = android.webkit.MimeTypeMap.getFileExtensionFromUrl("/data/a.xyz"); String xyzMimeType = android.webkit.MimeTypeMap.getSingleton().getMimeTypeFromExtension (extn); Log.d ("HelloAndroid", "extn: " + extn + " | xyzMimeType: " + xyzMimeType); }
}

It seems like every example I can find of switching between Activity's involves creating an Intent and passing in the context of a View via an OnClickListener associated with a button.But what if you just decide you need to switch Activity's? In my case, a Preference value is causing an Activity switch. How do you create an Intent that can cause an Activity switch without an associated OnClickListener?

I've been experimenting with the Android SDK over the past few days, in readiness to write an App for the store, however I've run across a bit of a problem.
The App I'll be writing requires that the user has a Google account associated with the phone. Retreiving and making use of the Auth token etc was not a problem, however I would like to be able to show the activity that a user would normal reach by going through the menus Settings->Accounts->Add Account.
Now through experimentation I've been able to launch this activity from the shell using the following command. am start -n com.google.android.gsf/.login.AccountIntroActivity
I'm having trouble performing the same action in JAVA using the Intent class.
Would anyone be able to tell me firstly whether or not this can be done via JAVA, and secondly how I could go about it please?
If I have to settle for the Sync Settings screen then I will (this can be achieved through the Settings.ACTION_SYNC_SETTINGS intent), however it'd be quite nice to be able to direct the user straight to the required screen.

Is there a way to retrieve Browser's user-agent without having a WebView in activity?
I know it is possible to get it via WebView:
WebView view = (WebView) findViewById(R.id.someview);
String ua = view.getSettings().getUserAgentString() ;
But in my case I don't have/need a webview object and I don't want to create it just for retrieving user-agent string.

When we create a new activity, in the Android.manifest file, we can set some text for the activity's label. It looks like:
<activity class="MyActivity" android:label="Some text here!">
Is there anyway to access that programatically and change it during runtime? Regards Dileep

I've got an activity for which I've defined an intent filter statically in AndroidManifest.xml. I'd like to register additional intents dynamically to that same intent filter in the activity's onStart() method. Is this possible? I'm trying to avoid having to implement a separate intent receiver class.

I have a custom view (an extension of a TextView) that I want to dynamically add to my Layout (don't want to include it in the main.xml file).
The book says to fetch the RelativeLayout using findViewById() in my java code then create a new instance of my custom view, then use addView on the RelativeLayout to add the new view.
I'm not getting any errors, but when I click my button to add the new view, nothing is happening (view isn't being added). Do I need to set additional properties on my custom view (layout width, layout height for example) in order for it to be shown?

I am writing an app that requires you to be logged in to a service before using it. From my understanding of android so far, you have to choose which activity to launch when you open from the launcher in the manifest. I don't know which activity i want to launch at compile time. I want the user to click the icon, then I check and see if they're logged in, then decide based on that whether to launch the login activity, or the main app activity. Is there a way to do this?

I wish to have a single class which all of my Activity classes extend. I have ListActivities, Activities, MapActivities, TabActivities, etc in my App.
I have many of these different activities in my app, ~12 activities. I want each of them to have the methods which are in the parent class.
Right now, i have created 4 parent activity classes which are extended from a certain activity depending on their type(ListActivity, Activity, MapActivity, TabActivity)
I am creating a lot of redundant code - each of the 4 parent activities has almost identical code, in exception for what class activity it extends.
Here is an example that may clarify what my problem is:
I have an Activity: MenuScreen which extends BaseListActivity BaseListActivity extends ListActivity BaseListActivity contains methods and fields which i want all my activities to have access to I have another Activity: HomeScreen which extends BaseActivity BaseActivity extends Activity BaseActivity contains the same methods and fields which are in my other Base[<type>]Activity classes(such as BaseListActivity)
These methods/fields are copy-pasted to all my Base[<type>]Activity, and seems awfully redundant to me.
Can i create a master activity class which all types of Activity classes can use as its parent? if not, am i stuck with copy and pasting this code and feeling gross/dirty about it?

Should I create a Listener within a BaseAdapter or should I pass it in? I have 4 classes that inherit from a base class. I pass the Adapter a list objects.
The Adapter is eventually used with a ListActivity I want to create a View based on the derived class and I want them to launch an Activity based on the type of a View. Currently I create the intent and Listener in the BaseAdapter. Is what I'm doing a good pratice?

I have used ImageView's before and understand the different scale types that can be set... However I am having an incredibly difficult time trying to get an ImageView to scale properly in the row of a ListActivity or an ExpandableListActivity.
I have tried setting the android:scaleType property to every single value but the image never scales down. I have set the min and max sizes as well and they don't seem to have any effect. I have done both of these things in both the XMl and in code to no avail...
Does anyone have any ideas or perhaps a workaround? code...

Since the type is determined automatically by the build system ( booleans, ints, floats and strings ) i wondered if there is any way to force the datatype to string.I tried adding a space at the end ( "5555555555 "), but then the value gets interpreted as 5.5555553E9 float! ).I also tried using getString instead of get, but then null is returned.

I'm working on an Android App where the user has different options for sorting the displayed data that comes from the database. Currently my orderBy string that I pass to Androids query() method looks like this:
"LOWER("+columnName+") ASC"
The problem with this is that if the data type in the column specified by columnName is integer, calling LOWER() on it will cause it to be sorted alphabetically, i.e. based only on the leftmost digit, which of course doesn't make any sense for numeric data. Hence I only want to apply LOWER() if the data type of the column is not integer. What I have in mind is a statement like this:
"CASE WHEN [data type of columnName is integer] THEN "+columnName+" ASC ELSE LOWER("+columName+") ASC END"
The part in the brackets is what I don't know how to do. Does SQLite provide a function to determine a column's data type?
