Android :: How To Manage Battery Health Of Development Devices When Always Plugged In

May 27, 2010

I know this question is not programming related, so for this I made community wiki. Developers are the best guys to answer the question.

I am addressed to those that do development on devices that runs on batteries, like phones, gadgets etc. Probably you are constantly develop for them, and therefor they are always plugged in and charged at 100%. We develop mainly for smartphones and we have devices that were always above 90% charged in the last month or so.

If a battery is always charged, it degrades it life cycle, so what steps you do to ensure decent battery drain to maximize the life of the batteries.

Android :: Overall Health Tracking App

Jul 21, 2010

Looked around, but haven't found anything that's like this:

Does anyone know of an app that can track one's sleep and mood and overall energy level day to day? I'm looking for something that'll let me rate my fatigue level from 1-10, my overall (i.e. "How do you feel today") from 1-10, the hours of sleep I got, the minutes of exercise, that sort of thing, and then export to CSV so I can keep a record.

Samsung Behold 2 :: When I Plugged In / Battery Charging Logo Didnt Show Up

Dec 13, 2009

Just for starters I have not rooted my phone or done anything of that nature. I've only had the phone for about two weeks. I've had an issue with it rebooting on me, though it was due to Locale since the first time it rebooted on me, that was the only thing I had done to the phone. The developer said there was an issue with the api's from samsung.Well since then I havent used Locale, removed it, yet its rebooted just a couple of times(compared to 3 times in an hour when I had locale). Now today, I found my phone completely unresponsive. Black screen, no lights, dead. I pulled the battery, reinserted and tried to power on. It charged overnight so it cant be a dead battery.

When I plugged in, the battery charging logo didnt show up, so I did a reset(vol down+ call+ power), got the behold ii boot logo with Recover text, so I hit the home button. I then got a logo I've never seen. It was a logo of the phone with the warning exclamation point inside a triangle. I left the phone alone for a while but it was still there. I pulled the battery again, reinserted and powered on to a normal boot and the phone came on.I'm going to talk to Tmobile about replacement as this is really weird and I havent seen anyone else say thing like this. And just for info, my battery does have the same serial number that others have found to have an issue with. I'll update with any other info I find out, but I'll probably just get a straight swap without any feedback.

HTC Eris :: Froyo Pattern-unlock / Manage Apps Hang And Battery Life

Nov 15, 2010

I'm a very happy KaosFroyo 37 user, but I have some misc questions.(sorry, this item is a sort of double-post) Do any of these lockscreen widgets work with Froyo? When I was running Android 1.5 and 2.1, I would keep my screen pattern-locked most of the time, since it lives in my pants' pocket and I want to avoid it activating accidentally. Then when I get into the car and place my phone in a cup holder, I would unlock the phone once and click a widget which would leave it unlocked (for easy access to GPS, etc.) for the duration of my ride, when I would lock the phone again and put it back in my pocket.Now with Android 2.2 I can't do this with the lock pattern, because apparently the security mechanisms don't permit it; one must re-enter the lock pattern several times, which is very time-consuming. Is there another approach for 2.2 users? I don't need very strong security, just want to avoid accidental phone calls and other accidental activations.
While (Android's) Manage Applications worked for me initially, now it only works the first time after a reboot. I.e., I can run it once, but on any subsequent attempts it will hang while attempting to populate its app list. As workaround I purchased Quick App Clean Cache, which is nice in its own right, but it would still be nicer not to have this problem. Also I'm not 100% convinced that Quick App Clean Cache is always giving me the complete set of options for an app, e.g. to move it to an SD card. Have others encountered this problem? I could probably generate a logcat for debugging purposes.

Most apps will let you move them to the SD card in KaosFroyo 37, even though I haven't checked the CyanogenMod option to permit these.I guess that there are a few more apps which might copy more completely to the SD card if I used this option.Can anyone shed any light on this option and whether it's saves any memory, and whether it induces any instability?I'm always careful not to copy widgets to the SD card.Battery life is a continued mystery; clearly much worse than before I rooted. Apparently the CPU tweaker isn't recommended (I guess it uses too much battery life trying to figure out whether it needs to adjust the CPU speed), and the battery life tweaker on the XDA forum described doesn't provide a very clear strategy. What do folks recommend? [ Correction: I had read a pretty incoherent writeup somewhere on XDA, but now see Collin_ph Battery Tweak RC1 for Cyanogen / Darch Froyo roms (possibly others) - xda-developers which is well-written. I will try this approach, but welcome your experiences.

Android :: Cannot Manage To Get ADB Working

May 25, 2010

I want to start developing for android and for some reason whatever I do I can not make ADB show up my Nexus One. Both on and off in development mode. Both SD Mount and without SD Mount Both With USB tethering on and off for all "ADB devices"(windows XP64bit) show no device (service started successfully, device recognized in Device Manager correctly).

Tried reinstalling drivers, tried uninstalling drivers completely(using 3rd party software) and reinstalling, tried different versions of USB driver (up to the one before the last - that came with the 2.1 SDK). It seems online that this issue reoccurs on different devices, but all of them seemed to solve with one of the above solutions, Which none worked for me. It does not look like a hardware problem, because everything else that is USB'ed works correctly.

I want to use the same eclipse project to maintain only one source code (or two projects that refer to a generic project). My problem is that the names of the package have to be different on the market (eg: my.android.app.lite and my.android.app.pro). If the package names are differents, the generated java ressource files are differents (eg: my.android.app.lite.R.java and my.android.app.pro.R.java). So, the source files must point to differents R files according to the version (pro or lite) and I have to change all the import...

Android :: How To Manage Connection To A Socket?

Jun 21, 2010

I would like to know what is the recommendation for socket connection management in Android?In our App we would like to be connected to a TCP/IP server when our app is in the foreground or paused. So, create a connection to a TCP/ IP server when the App starts basically, On Create of the launcher activity. However, we do not want to create a new connection and close connection every time an activity is created, paused, destroyed or orientation changed. So, we save the connection object in the App class and the activities will reuse the same connection.Question is when do I close it? I would like to close the socket when the App is "paused", "stopped" or "destroyed". The problem is these messages are not sent in the App context. How can I figure out if the App is in foreground or not? Even the "Terminated" event for an App is not guaranteed to be delivered. So, in that case how do I know when to disconnect?

Android :: How To Manage Event By 2 Widgets?

Jul 10, 2010

I want to change how a gallery looks like. I want to add 2 jogs at each side, so looks like this:
http://omploader.org/vNHc2Yw/device.png

First approach was to add the "jogs" to the ImageAdapter (at the beginning and at the end) for the Gallery. The Gallery will show the items as usual, but It will apply the custom background and also if you specify spacing, you will get an ugly gallery. Also, I want the jog not to be centered as the others images. Then, I decided to download the whole api and modify the Gallery source in a way so to handle specially the first item and the last item of the adapter. But, I don't know how to compile the api alone. The Makefile in the root project will build 6gb of the whole android platform. If someone can explain me how to build just the API, I will be grateful.

The other approach was to compose Views. I thought to add ImageView's to the left and right corner and to be scrolled when needed, but when the Gallery capture the events I can't forward it to the holder of the ImageViews. So, I extend Gallery, and I override onScroll() like this:
super.onScroll(e1,e2,distanceX,distanceY); return false;
and also onTouchEvent() like this:
super.onTouchEvent(event); return false;
But unfortunately when I return false wihtin onTouchEvent() the Gallery does not scroll.

So, main questions are:
1) How can I compile the modified API to generete a MyGallery.class to be added to android.jar? If I modify the source code of Gallery.java I can manage the fill of the Gallery for the specific items I want (I already read the source code).
2) In other approach, Is it possible to handle one event by 2 widgets? If so, I could overlap the Gallery above a jog. The Gallery will scroll as he knows, and I will scroll as I want.
3) If those approachs are bad, what will you recommend ?

I don't get why the Gallery does not have this nice feature I want to implement, kind of: setBorders(left, right) and etc. The problem on extending Gallery, is that when you add a View (for instance, the "jog"), you specify a position. Gallery fills the gallery getting the Views of it container with: getChildAt(0) and getChildAt(numChildren -1) when filling to right and left, respectively. Then, it gathers the 'unseen' Views from the Adapter. So the added view (the 'jog') will be scrolled by Gallery, but when the view is no longer visible, the Gallery itself has no way to get back that view, as it's not in the Adapter.
