HTC Desire :: How Well Does Android Manage Its Memory?
Jul 7, 2010
I always hear that I don't need to use Task Killers as Android manages its own memory. However, I find that sometimes when I play emulators, killing tasks provides far better framerates.

I have a 4GB SD card and it thinks that it has a total of 200MB on there (Its empty). I have tried formatting it using my Mac & via the phone itself but it continues to believe that its a 200MB MiniSD card.

Not had my desire long but down loaded a few apps for it they all seem to be stored on phone memory not the sd card. what is stored to the sd card seems to be unused so far. do you have to set it up to use sd card or does it know one is fitted. does it switch to sd card when phone memory full. will run out of space soon if can't get things to store to card instead of phone mem.

When i go to manage applications, to uninstall for example, the list takes AGES to load like 15 seconds its like the phone has crashed because it just hangs then it finally all appears. Sometimes it is instant, other times it takes ages is this normal?

I had 18mb internal memory free for apps and after installing an epub reader i kept getting the message running low on memory.I uninstalled it and did a reboot and now i have 70mb free and all the existing apps are running fine.Somehow i have managed to free up a huge amount of lost space which I assume was being taken up by apps not uninstalling correctly.Either way i'm happy until froyo comes out.Just wish I knew where the memory keeps disappearing to over time.

I got my phone yesterday and been playing with it since. Good bits-going on the net is quick, clear and very smooth. Customizing is very good. Bad bits-would have thought it would come with a video player that could play any type of format. I can't put apps onto mem card, thought the hole point of being able to put a large size mem card into the phone was so you could put all the extras onto the card. This is the main let down for me, got some apps on the phone last night then the phone said it had run out memory. I've seen that rooting can change this but don't fancy voiding my warranty. Wonder if a future update would cover this.

I have had my desire for one week now and have been playing around with apps etc (first android phone)I got a message today saying my phone memory was low (at one point i couldn't install an app. I have always uninstalled apps that i do not want and i have also moved as many as will allow to the SD card. Now i o dont think i have many apps installed (13 that wont allow me to move to the SD card) and yet i seem to be at my limit. Is this normal and is there a way around it. I was expecting to be able to install a lot more than this or is it a limitation of the desire? Currently my phone is showing 25.00MB of space left but i have just had to unistall afew as it was showing 17MB previously.

My memory is getting very low.I know about all the move to SD methods; I want to try and get rid of some unused data first.I always see posts about clear data and clear cache.Yes, this frees up space but do the apps actually need this data? What is the difference between data and cache? e.g.If I clear data from my contacts app, will all my contacts be deleted? What am I safe to clean up? Is there a way of cleaning up everything at once? Is there an equivalent to defrag and disc clean up? Any advice on getting some memory back without moving apps would be great.

Yesterday I had 70 Mb of internal memory left, today it's only 55! I haven't installed any apps, and even if I have, not 15 Mb!
So where's the memory being used up? I have seen that if you go into a contact's card, you are able to see his facebook photos in one of the tabs. These are downloaded to the internal memory then?
Does android automatically clear these things?

I have literally had this phone for 5 days and its saying low internal memory. I have no idea where the hell it all went. right now it says 15.7mb internal memory. I have moved most of my apps to sd card aswel. I had an HTC hero with virtually the same apps, and not once did it say low on memory so is my desire faulty ?

According to android information system; the max internal memory is 147mb, I have 14.75 mb (9%) left. This means I have used 132,75mb. According to app brain, I have 69 apps with a total of 140mb. Surely the move to SD built into froyo should move more than 7.25mb? Most of my apps have the feature. I know this is the poorest way of getting apps to SD but surely it should move more than that? I am going to have a go at the noob guide to moving apps to SD later to see if it improves things. I need to do something. I am at a stage now where apps not update. i have to uninstall the old version and then reinstall the new version.

I've noticed that the Internal memory of my Desire seems to filling up even though im not adding new files/downloading any new apps... Im using wi-fi several times a day to check emails, update friendstream etc... but there seems to be no major correlation with the memory increase.
As a guide memory usage has gone from 72mb to 82mb in the last 5-7 days
Is this normal? how i can clear out any files that may be accumulating? Obviously concerned as internal memory is limited as it is and if this continues it wont be long til the phone fills itself up!

My phone storage on my HTC Desire seems to be permanently full up, I know there's things like the Internet cache and contacts that are growing all the time but I should still have enough room for other stuff. I've installed and moved all apps to my sd card, I only have 35 or so and there all fairly small little apps but I use them all.
Yet I am always getting the phone is running low on memory message, so I cant install anything from the app store. Thing is I still have 11.55 mb of phone memory but I feel I should have loads more, there's only really a few things taking up memory from what I can see in my apps because everything else is on my sd card.
Contacts Storage: 17.34mb
Flash Player 10.1 : 12.39mb
Maps ; 7.75mb
Swype: 5.96mb
Facebook: 3.80mb
Voice Search: 2.57mb
HTC Sense : 2.30mb
Internet : 2.39mb
Everything else is all really under 1mb. Is there some other files or something lurking on my phone memory that shouldn't be there?

I've just been trying to download the latest update for the HTC Desire on Vodafone, but I can't install it, due to lack of internal memory.
I have checked all my apps & the ones I can "move to SD" have all been moved, but some apps won't give me the option to "move to SD"
My internal memory is still quite full (129mb out of 147mb)
Is there a way of moving stuff from the internal memory to my SD card?

I was having trouble getting an album icon to show up when transferring from pc to phone. I ended up trying to sync the album from Windows Media Player but it started syncing EVERYTHING so I stopped it. Then when I plugged it into the pc again it said I'd only got 1gb of memory on the card when I started it was 3.6gb. I've officially only put 6 albums on about 400mb in total yet spent 2.6gb. I'm assuming the tracks I accidentally synced are the cause yet when I open up the drive there's no sign of them. Anyone any ideas how or where I can find them & remove them?

Now a big problem is with an unrooted handset you start off with low internal memory as it is, but after I got the low memory message after numerous times I thought perhaps I would start deleting apps, unneeded texts, limiting the amount of emails and texts that my phone will store at once. That fixed the problem for a while but over time I would keep getting the numerous low memory messages again. Now I'm at the point where I have around 8 apps that weren't included with the phone and I keep getting the message. I know if I were to restore the phone to factory then this would fix it temporarily but after another month of use I'm sure it'll do it again. Any tips?

Has anyone come across a viable bluetooth flashdrive? I know Seagate launched one a year or so ago (Seagate DAVE) but it seems to have disappeared. Essentially I want to carry an external HDD drive with me, bluetooth enabled, so I can stream avi and mp3 to my Desire whilst traveling.I have a 16gb SD card in the phone but really want much more memory to be accessible.Best option is if/when the OS and h/w manufacturers allow non-powered usb sticks to connect with the phone. But until then I'll use bluetooth if such a memory stick exists!
