Android :: How To Do Modular Programs

Apr 7, 2010

In native development, you can produce libraries - .so, .dll etc - that other libraries and programs can share. In Java, you can put your code in a JAR in the classpath and other programs and libraries can use it.So how can you do modular programs in Android? I get the impression from the documentation that each APK is a self-contained island. Can different APKs share code?

And how does installation work when you have these external dependencies? Can you specify that you rely on library that is not in your APK and get it installed too?If you can't have 'dynamic linking', can you have 'static linking' by developing your shared code and somehow putting the equiv of a JAR into each APK that requires it?

Android :: Better Graphic And USB Programs

Mar 18, 2009

I do not consider my G1 to be a phone. My old second hand Nokia 6100 was a better phone because it was so small and light weight. Why I bought the G1 is because I consider my G1 to be a Mini Laptop. But we need better program for it. I need a graphic program like the Paint Shop Pro 4 where I can resize and fix photos. I still have not figured out how to connect to WiFi and call the USA for free (I am in Vietnam) BUT G Voice should be doing something in a few weeks. I will wait for them. Tonight I downloaded the USB connection program so my G1 can make my computer in my hotel connect to internet but edge network here is expensive. I did find a way to stop the phone from Sniffing the EDGE network. I mess up the name in the APN code by adding xxx to the end. Then it will not connect to DATA.

Android :: How To Get Programs To Replace Widgets?

Sep 23, 2010

Has anyone else had the issue where when you launch ADW you can't access all the same widgets as you could without it? When I use ADW launcher I can't seem to access the Media & Web player widgets that I can normally access - those are the lovely little spinning pieces that display your pictures/wallpapers/music or your browser bookmarks. I'm on the Acer Liquid E - 2.1. Are there any decent programs to replace these two widgets or should I replace ADW? I'd like to keep ADW so I can have 7 screens without modding my phone. Or is there a replacement for ADW that will let me have more screens and access all my regular widgets?

The two most important extra features for me, doesn't matter if I need to get apps to do it, but kind of curious!

Android :: How To Make Java And C Programs Communicate Together?

Apr 29, 2010

I have written a command line interface program in the C language. This kind of programs (as you know) waits for user commands typed in the terminal and reacts on depend of them. In fact, the program implements a callback function which parses the command and invokes the appropriate function in order to respond to the user. Now, I have to make a Java GUI (Graphical user interface) for the desktop (Ubuntu) version of this program and then port the same program to the Android Platform (of course the GUI will respect Android framework), so I'm looking for the best way to do it.I have heard about JNI and JNA and I don't known which one will be the best for me. By the way what are the main differences between JNI and JNA.

If I don't use ATK, my phone runs very fast and smooth with a ton of crap listed in the back ground. It even scrolls fine. However, it benchmarks lower than when I use ATK to kill everything. My quadrant scores really get low when ATK shows a ton of programs. Kill them and the phone is slow, but benches higher. I stopped using ATK for the most part, but occassionally do for what ever reasons. High bench marks makes me feel good, but so does a smooth phone!

Android :: Program Missing From All Programs Screen

Aug 7, 2009

I recently loaded an update to the Bedside (Night Clock) paid application. The shortcut I had on my Android desktop changed from the bed icon to a gear icon. I dragged the gear icon to the trash with the intention of re-adding the bed icon from the all programs screen. Sadly, there is no entry for Bedside on the All Programs screen!

I can run the program using many clicks by going to Market > My Downloads > Bedside > Open. Is there a way to add an installed app into the All Programs screen without root? Note: if I long click on the desktop and try to add an app, Bedside also doesn't show up in the resulting list. It is installed because I can run it through Market. I have considered uninstalling and reinstalling but am unsure if I will be charged again.

Android :: MSNTalk - Battery Drain - Other IM Programs?

Nov 8, 2010

I just purchased an HTC Desire Z a few days ago and one of the first apps that I have downloaded is MSNTalk since I do a lot of messaging on MSN Messenger. I leave this app on all the time and I feel that it drains my battery considerably.

I've gone through the basic "conserve your battery" steps that many people have mentioned (i.e. no wi-fi, low backlight, increase email sync time, download only headers, kill running apps that are doing nothing, etc, etc.). However, my battery does not last more than 22-23 hours.

This 22-23 hours is with extreme minimal usage since I wanted to test the idle life on the phone. 22-23 hours of battery life without much use is quite bad imo, especially with the steps taken above to try and conserve more battery. The only thing I haven't tried yet is completely turning off MSNTalk and then testing how long the battery lasts. As we speak, my phone is charging and when it is at full battery life I will see if MSNTalk was indeed the culprit here.

Also, with MSNTalk on during the 22-23 hours the amount of data usage was around 8-9 MB/day. I think this is fairly high as well. This means the 3G was being used constantly.

I'd just like to know if anyone else has used MSNTalk and found the same issues with the battery life.

If it is indeed MSNTalk, does anyone have any suggestions on a good MSN IM app that is very good on the battery (i.e. BeeJive, EBuddy, etc)? For example, my friend uses BeeJive on his iPhone and it doesn't have the same battery issues as I do (he can easily go over a day).

Android :: Raketu Vs Skype & VOIP Programs

Apr 27, 2009

Website says 1 cents to call the USA but when I tried it wants 17 cents a minute so I tried a 1 800 number and again it wants 17 cents a minute. If I am using WiFi and connected to their website in the USA and making a call in the USA why are they trying to charge 17 cents a minute? Skype STILL will not allow Vietnam users with G1's call at all. Its been a LONG TIME.Can someone make a VOIP Program that works and does what it should. That is using WiFi I should be able to make a cheap US Call!

General :: Stop Android From Closing Programs On Its Own?

Apr 12, 2012

As many of you know, back in October I had to make an emergency switch from Windows Mobile to Android. As you've all read in my posts, it has been a very "mixed" experience with both some impressive and downright pathetic discoveries, but one of the worst things about it (beside the complete inability to sync) is the way that Android closes your programs whenever it feels like it instead of letting you close them. Sometimes I'll be browsing the internet in Opera Mobile and I'll switch over to the email program briefly to check something, when I hold down the "home" key and pick OM from the list of recently used programs, it starts it all over again, and I know for a fact I didn't choose "exit".

Sometimes I'm glad Android "cleans up" (like if I back out of a program that has no "exit" option) because it saves me the trip to the task manager later, but is there any way I can prevent it from closing stuff I'm actually still using?

Android :: LogCat Only Output Info From Running Programs

Jul 14, 2009

I have found that if I am trying to run Eclipse with the G1 connected (vis USB), logcat will only output info from programs running on the phone - not when I run code on the emulator. If I disconnect the phone and then run the emulator version, logcat provides the desired output.

I also have now discovered that if I connect the G1, the SD Card on the emulator shows the contents of the G1 SD Card, whether I am running code on the emulator or the phone. This was a little confusing as I expected the AVD to control the SD Card when I run a virtual version, not the attached 'real' phone.
