Android : How To Remove Apps Programatically?
Jun 29, 2010
Is it possible to remove an application programatically? If so, shall I look at the package manager for that or is there an example some place? When a package is installed, I believe there is a broadcast message to the system saying that. Is it possible to capture that broadcast message?

I was looking through the source code for launcher in git for the first time after asking this question. I got the UNINSTALL_SHORTCUT to work. However, this seems to remove it from the home screen.Maybe my vocabulary is not correct, but I assumed the "home" screen was the thing that displays widgets and shortcuts that you can fling left and right to see all 3 screens.set in the AndroidManifest.xml.What I need to do is remove the icon from the "launcher" not just removing a shortcut from the home screen.I don't know if I can programatically over-write what I have set in the Manifest. That is, I need it to initially be displayed in the "Launcher" but upon receiving a certain intent, to hide itself. In essence, to programatically remove the "android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" from it's category list set in the AndroidManifest.xml

Is there a way to remove apps from My Android Apps list, on Android Market / Google Play? I have a few hundred in my list and a few dozen of those are apps I plan to never install again. I'd like to remove them from my list in the Market/Play. I've already uninstalled them from my phone.

Is there any way to remove pre-installed programs?
For example, the following programs were pre-installed:
Amazon MP3
Footprints
Teeter
And maybe some others.
I've just tried:
Settings | Applications | Manage Apps
And noticed there's not always an option to Uninstall on these and some others.
Is it possible to remove, delete, uninstall, or get them off the device?
Is there any way to remove the pre-installed Sprint programs?
Sprint TV
Sprint-Nextel
NFL
Nascar
Are there some "core apps" or "core programs" that can't be removed?
A brief search on this matter on related threads seems to indicate only on "rooted" phones.

How do I completely remove rather than rename unwanted apps? Specifically, what commands have to be entered into the shell? And where can I find a listing of the apps in rom? I am rooted and have some knowledge of adb and the android sdk. here are just a number of the apps I never will use, so I would prefer to free up memory.

I'm up for a new phone to replace my hated BB Storm. I played with the DX and D2, ( still can't decide) in the store. What struck me was the amount of apps or widgets for things I'll never use cluttering the screens. Can these be removed or is this all linked to the OS? Is this what people are talking about in reference to installing ROMS? I understand that this is not yet possible on the Ds because of eFuse. I also understand it is being worked on.

I am having trouble removing apps. I go to "All apps", touch and hold on the app I want to delete until the front page comes up with the trash can saying remove. I drag it over top of it and let go. But then I go check, and it still shows up on the "All apps" page. What am I missing/doing wrong?

I was just wondering, can the Gmail and Messages stock applications be removed? I tried to do just that, but then a warning pops up saying "it can't be done". And I've tried the stock uninstaller and third party ones. And if it can be done what happens then? Any complications like... i dunno, deleting Gmail connection to my phone, or SMS network settings? I don't want either of that obviously. I use the stock Mail application for all my email accounts, so Gmail is plain redundant, and i also use Handcent SMS third party app for my SMS, which makes the messages stock app also redundant. I don't mind about the bit of space they take, but it's just annoying when i receive an email from Gmail, both apps activate and i get two notifications. And same thing happens with SMS too.

Would it be true to say that I can merely root my Desire to remove useless HTC apps and just continue booting the ROM that is originally on my Desire (Sense + Eclair 2.1)? The reason why I ask this is because most of the new Froyo ROMS have some sort of functionality lost one way or another. If I keep my original ROM this would mean everything works as it used to before I rooted right? If so, can I add the functionality of App2SD+ onto my stock ROM? (Without going up unofficial Froyo's)
