If there is a image on my phone that I want to send up to a server thats 1mb or higher I want to take that image and shrink it to a smaller size without messing with original image in anyway. I know how to get a from the phone and I also know how to send it up to a server, I just need to know how to make the image smaller because large files higher than 1mb are giving me issues.

I am creating a simple android app to view a comic book. The pages are large(0.5-1 mb each), high quality .png's and I am loading them into a webview to make use of the built in zoom controls. So far I only have 17 files and the APK size is already about 16 mb. I'm looking to add over 200 files in future updates. I can't really reduce the quality too much because there is small text that must be zoomed-in on to read. Any suggestions? A similar question was posted here: How to reduce App (.apk) Size, but I don't want to lose the quality of the images. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to link to here, but you can have a look at my app by searching for Tracer (by Detour Mobile) on the android market if it helps at all.

Let's say I use a ScrollView to pan over a very large view. The large view draws itself dynamically in onDraw(). Is there a practical limit to the size of the view? That is, are view contents cached or buffer-backed and can I turn that off?

I am trying to detect if the screen size is normal, large or small. I am using
Configuration conf =view.getResources().getConfiguration();
(conf.screenLayout&Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_MASK) == Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_NORMAL
When testing with the emulator this works for screen sizes normal and small, but large (480x800 & 480x854) returns that it is normal...
I have found very little information on using the configuration to detect the group, has anyone got any experience with this?

It seems like whenever I try to send pictures to others via MMS, it won't let me because the pictures are too large. I know I can have my Hero take pictures it smaller resolutions, but I wouldn't want low-res pictures unless I would want to send them via MMS.
The thing is, a lot of times I dont know ahead of time that a picture I am about to take with the Hero will be used to send in an MMS. So its hard to make the decision to take in a low res beforehand. I could just switch the Hero to take all pics in low res, but then what about all the pics I don't need to send via MMS? They will all be low resolution.

From Android widget screen guidelines,we know that, home screen has 4*4 cells, and in portrait orientation, each cell is 80 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall. I think these are for baseline HVGA screen. How about for large screens and hdpi screens, do they still have 4*4 cells for widget and each cell in portrait orientation is still 80 pixels * 100 pixels?

I have an issue with installing an apk of size 72 MB onto devices like Samsung Galaxy i7500 and Nexus One. The entire size of the application is 256 MB. The devices have enough memory say 600MB on samsung galaxy. But still it does not install saying there is insufficient storage. Do the apk file gets uncompressed to the size of application after installing. I mean if I am installing this 72 MB apk does it take 256 MB space of application. Does it work somewhat like a .zip file? Please give me a solution as to why even after having enough memory I cant install the apk?

The biggest talking point with this phone seems to be the size. Id be curious to see some numerical opinions! I myself have been waffling: at first I thought "Oh, way too big". Then this picture made me think its not the much larger than similar phones and I was getting it for sure! But this pic has me wondering. Looks pretty giant in her hand:
So: What do YOU think about the size? If you havent seen yet, engadget has a gallery of 50 some pictures.

I am trying to build an Android application which can take several photos taken by the camera, and merge them into one giant image. For example, I might take three photos and arrange them in a vertical stack for output as a single image. Ideally, I'd like to be able to keep the images at the original size. Unfortunately, using Bitmap.createBitmap() causes an OutOfMemoryException before even approaching the size of one photo of camera dimensions. Is this possible? Or do I just need to resort to scaling the photos before trying to merge them into a single Bitmap?

This is my first post. I've had a Moto Droid since day one, and I just love it. It is without a doubt better than any phone that I've had over the years, and that includes the iPhone, BB, etc.
However, there are 2 things that I don't understand - Font size and a spell checker. It is imposiible to read the small font size in emails or text messages.
1. Why has there not been an app to either change the font size or be able to zoom in? Picasy has incorporated multi-touch for zooming, so I've to assume that its doable! Why not have the same in an email client.
2. Why is there not an email client out there that allows for spell checking? There are many such apps for the BB! I am a terrible speller.
I am not complaining, I just want to understand the limitations from a developers prospective, as I am sure these isuues will eventually be addressed.

Folks, apologies ... I have a very urgent request. Tomorrow I want to present an Android application on the phone (not on the emulator) to a group of students. I have a Samsung Galaxy running on Android 1.5. I got it all hooked up and I can see the device using "adb devices". I can also see it in DDMS. So the connection is fine. I even can install the application on the device - but I cannot run it. The main problem seems to be that my application cannot access the corresponding local SQLite database. Everything works perfectly on the emulator. I figured out that I also cannot access the data/data folder on the devices. It says "permission denied". Then I found out that I have to "root" the device. But absolutely no clue how I can do that. Also installing the apk through "adb install ...." did not work. What can I do in order to get my SQLite db on the device? Do I have to root it?

I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice for my possible plan of grabbing a fairly cheap (under 120 so I think that's about $180) HTC handset, preferably with a good size screen as I like to spend far too long online on my current phone (!), and install Android on it!
So... how easy is this? Is there a recommended phone or small range of phones within my price bracket? And... are there disadvantages, and do I get automatic updates and stuff? I'm a fairly heavy medium-term Linux and Ubuntu user but this is my first adventure with Android!

After playing pandora, slacker or using other data intensive apps the radio locks up. The up arrow just sticks and the only recourse is to restart the phone. Anyone else experiencing this? I did find if I turn off bluetooth and wifi(even though im not using it) it doesn't seem to happen nearly as often. Maybe its a heat issue?

I am in need to write an application for Android devices that needs to access a large (~200MB) database.
What would be the best way to do this? Can I just stick the database in the assets folder? I have read of various limitations that apply to the entire application size and to individual resources within, especially on some devices... What are exactly these limits?
Is there any way to do this apart from a post-installation download from an external server?
