Android :: Smaller APK Size With Large Assets?

Oct 5, 2010

I am creating a simple android app to view a comic book. The pages are large(0.5-1 mb each), high quality .png's and I am loading them into a webview to make use of the built in zoom controls. So far I only have 17 files and the APK size is already about 16 mb. I'm looking to add over 200 files in future updates. I can't really reduce the quality too much because there is small text that must be zoomed-in on to read. Any suggestions? A similar question was posted here: How to reduce App (.apk) Size, but I don't want to lose the quality of the images. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to link to here, but you can have a look at my app by searching for Tracer (by Detour Mobile) on the android market if it helps at all.

Android :: About Size Of Resource Assets Files & Final Apk Size

Oct 2, 2009

I am currently developing a dictionary application with voice database. I would like to know about the current Android limitation on the file size. I am using a self-provided sqlite database ( > 50mb ) . I tested that once the built .apk size exceeds ~30mb the app will not be installed onto the simulator (INSTALL_FAILED_ INSUFFICIENT _STORAGE). Could anyone confirm me that if up until now there is no way to embed such large size files in a single apk ( Aimed to sell at Google Market without requiring user to download datafile afterwards). Also, is there a limitation of 1,048,576 bytes for a single file in the assets folder ?

Android :: Read LARGE Sqlite File To Be Copied Into Emulator - Or Device From Assets Folder

May 28, 2010

I guess many people already read this article:

Using your own SQLite database in Android applications: http://www.reigndesign.com/blog/using-your-own-sqlite-database-in-android-applications/comment-page-2/#comment-12368

However it's keep bringing IOException at

CODE:.............

I'am trying to use a large DB file. It's as big as >8MB. I built it using sqlite3 in Mac OS X, inserted UTF-8 encoded strings (for I am using Korean), added android_meta table with ko_KR as locale, as instructed above.

However, When I debug, it keeps showing IOException at

CODE:..............

I suspect it's caused by trying to read a big file. If not, I have no clue why.
I tested the same code using much smaller text file, and it worked fine.

Can anyone help me out on this? I've searched many places, but no place gave me the clear answer, or good solution. Good meaning efficient or easy.

I will try use BufferedInput(Output)Stream, but if the simpler one cannot work, I don't think this will work either.

Can anyone explain the fundamental limits in file input/output in Android, and the right way around it, possibly?

WITH MORE DETAIL:

Works fine but the file size is like 1.5GB, does anyone know if there is a way to make the file smaller? I'm not hugely concerned that the quality is the best, but hopefully not too pixally, I just want something to watch while I'm at the gym.

Android :: Scrolling Large Lists Of Cursor-based Adapters Is Faster Than Much Smaller Lists Of In-memory Adapters

Nov 3, 2010

I have an Android app that has both CursorAdapter based ListViews (backed by sqlite) as well as custom BaseAdapter based ListViews which are built on the fly from JSON pulled down from a server.

The data displayed in both is identical - an image and a couple of TextViews. My Cursor-based ListView has 3000 rows, the JSON-based ListView has about 30. However, scrolling down the list is significantly faster for the Cursor-based adapter. For the JSON-based lists, the data is all fetched before the rows are made visible. Images for both types of lists are downloaded on-demand.

I have both ListViews configured identically - both with fastScrollEnabled, scrollingCache and smoothScrollbar set to true.

I'm looking for leads on how to go about trying to figure out what's going on here and to potentially fix it so that the JSON-based ListViews as as fast as the Cursor-based ones.

Android : Detect Screen Size Group (normal, large, Small)?

Dec 6, 2009

I am trying to detect if the screen size is normal, large or small. I am using

Configuration conf =view.getResources().getConfiguration();

(conf.screenLayout&Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_MASK) == Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_NORMAL

When testing with the emulator this works for screen sizes normal and small, but large (480x800 & 480x854) returns that it is normal...

I have found very little information on using the configuration to detect the group, has anyone got any experience with this?

Sprint HTC Hero :: Sending Pictures Via MMS - Size Too Large?

Apr 24, 2010

It seems like whenever I try to send pictures to others via MMS, it won't let me because the pictures are too large. I know I can have my Hero take pictures it smaller resolutions, but I wouldn't want low-res pictures unless I would want to send them via MMS.

The thing is, a lot of times I dont know ahead of time that a picture I am about to take with the Hero will be used to send in an MMS. So its hard to make the decision to take in a low res beforehand. I could just switch the Hero to take all pics in low res, but then what about all the pics I don't need to send via MMS? They will all be low resolution.

How about for large screens and hdpi screens, do they still have 4*4 cells for widget and each cell in portrait orientation is still 80 pixels * 100 pixels?

Android :: Create Smaller Tabs ?

Aug 21, 2010

I am trying to create smaller tabs in android -- but I can't seem to get it to work because all that happens when I create a smaller tab is that it shows the bigger tab -- but without a drawable.

This is my layout code for tabs now -- but the height isn't wrapping for some reason -- it just goes to Android's usual layout height.

CODE:.........................

It would be great if someone could help me create something like the Facebook application -- I think that looks really clean and I would love to implement something like it:

For example, if I have 3 square bitmaps, I'd like to copy them into one long and thin rectangle. I know how to do the opposite, namely creating a small bitmap out of a larger one, but not this way around. What's the right command? The default EditText size is too wide for me to show enough EditText controls on a screen, but I have been unable to figure out how to make them narrower. I have tried the following attributes in XML: android:maxLength="2" android:layout_width="20dip" android:maxWidth="20px" android:ems="2" android:maxEms="2". So the question is: how can EditText be made smaller than default?

Android :: How To Get Around Clipping Issues With My App In Smaller Phones

Nov 23, 2010

I have a basic linear layout, with image view that display photos, textviews that show text etc...and when I test my whole app on my android 2, there is never any part of the screen that doesn't show. But when I test it in the QVGA emulator, half the view is off the screen. Now, some of my text is defined to a certain size.

I never use px (only dip) in any of my xml. I use fill_parent, wrap_content where it is needed and never fix a height or length. Could it be with my text, I use say, textSize = 22dip? I couldn't find documentation on why that would not work in all sizes. Could it be that some apps need to be programmed to those screen sizes? Or am I missing something?

Android :: How Do I Make My Image View Fixed Size Regardless Of Size Of Bitmap

Sep 23, 2010

So I'm loading images from a web service, but the size of the images are sometimes smaller or bigger than other images and the visualization looks silly when I put them in a ListView in android. I'd like to fix the size of my ImageView so that it only shows a portion of the image if it's larger than a preset amount. I've tried everything I can think of setting the setMaxWidth/setMaxHeight, setting the scale type to centerCrop, using ClipableDrawable wrapping my BitmapDrawable, setting using Drawable.setBounds(). I've tried setting in the XML and programmatically, but neither worked. I'm very surprised setting max width/height didn't do anything. Below is the XML I'm using ImageView definition in my layout file

Android : Pictures I Import - Process Always Turn Out Smaller?

Jul 13, 2010

I've been playing around with the Vignette demo version for a couple of days and I'm having an issue that I hope is just related to this being the free version. I know that the free version of Vignette only saves pictures at the really small size. When I take a picture through the app and save a square version of it, it's saving at 540 by 540 pixels. When I open the app and import another picture I've taken with the phone and use exactly the same effects, I get a 275 by 275 pixel square. I'm thinking of buying the full version, will the pictures I import and process always turn out smaller than the ones I take with the camera?
