Android :: How Exchange ActiveSync A Push Email Client
Aug 26, 2010
I was just tinkering with my Droid Incredible's "Accounts & Sync" and I am confused about something. With the Gmail app, there is no option to designate how often to check do for messages because it's a push email client, good. But when I check my settings for Exchange, I am given options to select how often to sync. I was under the impression that Exchange ActiveSync is a push email service, meaning I shouldn't need to designate when I want it to sync because it pushes vs. pulling. Am I missing something here?
I am running 2.2 froyo under SkyRaider 2.5

I'm one who has not bought into all the iPhone and ipad Apple hype. And now that AT&T announced they would limit there data plans I'm even less of a fan.
So I've been using my corporate Blackberry.. I rarely surf on the phone - if ever to just use it to quickly prove a point or get some basic GPS navigation. Basically I use it as a phone, email device and calendar. Occasionaly to take a picture too.
I've not been too excited to change until now.
I understand the Evo can be used as a mobile hotspot at 4g? WOW! Anybody using it to serve wifi for a PS3 online game from it ? does it really work?
What about corporate push email? Will it work with Exchange ActiveSync to keep my Outlook email and calendars current on the phone? What about Gmail and yahoo push email? Will pushing emails from these three servers drain my battery?
How widespread is the Sprint 4g network? Any chance of getting 4g in places like Gainesville, FL, Macon, GA, Helen, Georgia?

I boot the phone. Exchange push works great. No issues. If I turn on WiFi, I can still send and receive but push is slow or does not work...I have to manually refresh. If I turn WiFi back off, push still does not work consistently until I reboot the phone.

On Epic Android 2.1
Just yesterday I configured my primary gmail email on a Samsung Epic using Exchange activesync.. It was working and syncing very fast. Except for some VERY IMPORTANT missing features : Default send From, Send From dropdown for all emails in my gmail account and Reply From the original recipent - I was at least happy to get push gmail.
However, today, in an attemp to find some way to send emails as my other domains on the gmail account I deleted that gmail account from the Phone and attempted to configure the secondary account via ActiveSync with something like googleme@mydomain.com... when that did not work (got loading message at the end and it never came back), I presumed you can't do that.. but now I can't even add the orignal gmail acccount back in with Exchange activesync. Same endless loading message ???
so I gave up and let it automatically add gmail account - smtp with 30 minute get sync. Errr.
Did I break something? I'm still able to authenticate into my google account as the gmail primary and the secondaries from the web.
Did I change something on the googl eacoount to cause this? I did add a 3rd email and also made it the default send as on the web client - though that has no bearing on the Android email client.

Since the Evo has a bug with activesync causing the phone to constantly reboot if you shut it off and turn it back on, is there another problem I can download to work with Exchange to replace the Android activesync program until its fixed?

This is my first post on the androidforums. I usually just read what other people wrote, but I can't seem to find a related post for my current problem.I date someone overseas in S. Korea, and since there's no way to send text msgs in Korean from here, I talk to her using activesync with a gmail account. She can check emails on her phone from Korea, and my phone sends me notification everytime I get an email from her. Basically it's same as texting except it allows me to type in Korean and doesn't cost a dime. For the reasons mentioned above, saving battery life isn't much of an option for me. I need to have activesync or gmail push running instantly. I tried using "check email every 5 minutes", but just imagine having to stay idle for 5 minutes everytime you text with your friends.
As of today, gmail push on android seems to work with 5 - 30 minutes delay (or manual refresh). However, Exchange Activesync will not even allow me to sync gmail (Different errors every time even though I'm putting the same information; gmail address,m.google.com as server address, username & password). I thought activesync just allows me to use "gmail push" on HTC mail app, so I don't quite understand why gmail app works (despite the lag), but activesync won't even let me sync my mail. Activesync last worked on 06/17/2010.Also, gmail push works with no lag when I'm on wifi. Is this normal?I'm starting to think there's a problem with the Sprint network or my phone. Gmail push also works instantly if my 3G bar is white. If it's greyed out, no emails come until the 3G bar turns white. Now I have to turn on AIM or MSN messenger to keep the data flowing and manually keep the 3G bar white. Then gmail push comes instantly. It's pretty ridiculous because the battery then lasts about 2-4 hours.

I have the push option on, and the fetch set to every 15 minutes, yet, the default email client on my DX will not fetch OR push email from my qwest.net account. I know the server and log in are correct because I can manually refresh it and it will get me my mail. Its a POP3 account. Can anyone offer me any ideas? I don't run very many apps and I don't have any kind of task killer going on.

Been searching forums and the internet for an email client for Android, more specifically the Moto Droid. Is K9 the best it gets? Are there no other options besides the default client and K9? I don't need Exchange features, although my wife does.

I know this has been talked about a lot in these forums, but I don't see any proof one way or the other. Some people say that the only way to get push notifications is to use the gmail app or a 3rd party app, and some people say you can use the stock HTC app and set things up through Exchange. Then some more people say that even setting it up through Exchange is a "pull" account as well, not push. However, what I don't see is hard core proof to back any of this up. I would imagine that there is documentation out there somewhere of what exactly is driving the email collection in the HTC Sense email app, and whether or not it is different for Exchange accounts.

I have a Droid X that is upgraded to 2.2 but I noticed this weekend that I didn't receive emails on Saturday until I pinged the server on Sunday night. When I was on 2.1 this wasn't an issue and I'm noticing now it is.
Settings right now are:
Data Delivery:
1. Background data is OFF
2. Email and Corp Sync: Data Push
Battery Manager:
1. Now in Performance mode, I turned off Custom this morning.
I might have solved my own problem by changing to "Performance Mode".

I have a Galaxy Nexus with Stock 4.0.4 ROM and a Transformer Prime also with the stock ASUS firmware (4.0.3), The company where I work has a mail server that supports exchange (Kerio Connect) At that server I have (because I need it that way) 2 different accounts, I need one of those accounts to synchronize everything; contacts, mail, calendar, and the other one to synchronize only calendar appointments.
If I configure the first account everything works just fine. But, when I configure the second account, I start receiving login errors for both accounts every certain time, the apps shows me the option to update my account credentials and when I do it works for the moment but after a while it fails again. If I delete whichever of the two accounts the other works fine.
I have not tested this scenario against other email servers, so I'm not sure if this a problem with my server or if this is an Android problem.
Both accounts are configured as Exchange accounts from Settings menu.

I haven't seen an follow up to this thread about using ActiveSync to get Gmail push to the HTC Mail app.
Just to share my experience, I setup ActiveSync for Gmail using the instructions posted in that thread, then setting the frequency to "as items arrive". I now get my Gmail litterally within 5-10 seconds of actually receiving it. In fact, I just tested it out by sending myself an email on my computer, and my phone beeped within 5 seconds.
Looking at my phone without any extra processes running, it doesn't seem to be "scanning" or trying to pull email every so often. Maybe I'm wrong, but this seems like a legit real time Gmail "push" to my phone. I'll have more info on battery life over the weekend, but for now this works great.

ActiveSync has been working just fine with our Exchange Server 2007 for the past 6 months. However, today we updated from 2007 to 2010 server and the server address changed from exchange.xxxx.com to remote.xxxx.com and I cannot figure out how to change this on the settings. The only thing that it will allow me to edit is the password. I press on the server address and it will not do anything. I have deleted the account on my phone and re-entered it hoping that it will let me edit manually. I get the error message, "Your microsoft exchange server account does not have permission to synchronize with your current settings. Contact your exchange server admin". I made sure the spelling is correct and our Admin is well, not up to the challenge.

I just got my first Android phone, a Motorola Milestone with Telus. I use Exchange 2007 and setup activesync with the builtin email client and it works great, however, the view is one folder at a time. I have many rules setup to move emails from specific sources to specific folders since I receive a lot of email in a day from many different clients and vendors. The problem I see is that I have to manually switch from one folder to another and hit refresh to see new emails in the subfolders.

I set up an exchange activeync account on my new HTC desire. I encounter a strange behaviour with it. After synchronizing it shows only few folders from my mail box (around 5) where i got around 50. I tried to delete the account and recreate it -> no change I give a try to Touchdown app, and it retrieve all folders. I don't want to use another app than the one given with my HTC, so here is why I post this topic.
FW : 2.1 update1 software : 1.21.405.2 language FR

I'm trying to find out the Hotmail Exchange server setting in the hope that it will start working prior to the official rollout. I know they started the wave 4 rollout today. They've said it will be rolled out in pieces and isn't due to finish until August but they don't give any idea to who will get which features when. So if you find out the exchange setting for Hotmail / Windows Live Mail post them here.

I have found a problem and no solution on line ... so I wanted to run it past you all. I have SBS2003 R2 Premium. We have several smartphones ... android based with email through our Exchange 2003 server using activesync. THE PROBLEM: When users attempt to forward an email to another domain users mailbox ... the email is never received. It shows in the outbox in both the phone and Exchange outbox (sent items). If I forward the email from me to me, the email is successful. Also, if an email is sent directly to a domain user, the email is received (no forwarding) without any problem. All other aspects of activesync appear to work fine. Still have not found an Iphone to test against.

I am running 2.1 v2 on my Droid Eris and I set up my work email (exchange) through Activesync.
Now every time the lock screen appears I can't open it up without a password. I want this turned off. I have read elsewhere that you can install apps that overcome the lock. However, I am exploring other ways to work around this. Does anyone else have experience with this? I would like to not have to enter the password in every time the phone screen locks. I also don't necessarily want an app running in the background either.

I got my HTC Incredible running 2.1 when it was first released, setup my Exchange ActiveSync account, and noticed that my only option under Mail Size Limit is to download Headers Only. This got annoying very quickly, as I have to click 'Get Remaining' on every single email, regardless of the size. I researched this issue when the phone first came out and came up with nothing on it, and two other guys at work with the Droid Eris on 1.5 don't have this issue, they get the full range of size options to download.
Fast forward to today, one of the guys with the Eris installed the update to Android 2.1, and now he has the exact same problem I do. When I saw his issue, I started to research it again now that a month or so has passed, but I still can't seem to find any documentation or reports of similar issues.
Anybody else see this behavior with 2.1 + Exchange? I can't see it being a problem server-side since it works under 1.5, but my phone can download the whole message if I setup a regular POP account.

I've been debating configuring my personal phone to access my employer's Exchange server; I would be checking it on occasion-- more of a convenience thing to know what's up before I head in for the day.
Using the default Android Mail client and choosing ActiveSync and doing the setup, I inevitably reach a screen with the following:
Quote:
Activate security policies?
Exchange security policies
Your IT administrator requires that you activate these security policies in order to sync with your Exchange Server.
Activating this administrator will allow the application Mail to perform the following operations:
! Erase all data
Perform a factory reset, which deletes all of your data without any confirmation.
! Set password rules
Restrict the types of passwords that you are allowed to use.
! Monitor screen-unlock attempts
Monitor failed attempts to log into your device.
! Lock the screen
Control when your device locks, requiring that you re-enter your password.
! Device function limitation
Restrict some function on device like Wifi, Bluetooth, Camera etc.
Needless to say, this is highly unappealing for my personal phone-- way too much power for the Mail application. So my questions-- what are my options?
-would a different Exchange connectivity application like Touchdown request those same permissions for access?
-would I be better off setting up ActiveSync on an alternate ROM and booting into that when I want to check work mail (not as frequently as some other users)?
-How far does that remote wipe control extend? Could they wipe the entire phone, including bootloader? Or is it just reference to internal storage? Could they wipe the external SD card?
-is there a way to revoke those permissions from the Mail application while retaining the ability to connect to the Exchange server?

I bought the Evo for my personal use. However, I was looking at an FAQ this morning on my company's IT site on supporting Android devices thinking it might be a possibility. Currently personally funded Blackberry, iPhone and Windows mobile devices are supported for connection to our Microsoft Exchange email services.
I noticed the following in an FAQ in regards to Android support, is this true? I thought the Evo supports ActiveSync?
Question: How can I access my corporate email on my Android device?
Answer: At the moment, XYZ does not support Android due to its lack of ActiveSync support (access to Microsoft Exchange email). When/If this option becomes available, updates will be posted through the Mobile Device website.
Question: When will Android be an option for users?
Answer: XYZ has decided that we will not support the Android for corporate email at this time. If/When Android supports ActiveSync we will re-evaluate.
Question: How about if I have a personally funded Android phone?
Answer: Presently, corporate email access is not available for any Android devices due to its lack of ActiveSync support (access to Microsoft Exchange email).

I got my HTC Desire last week and Synced it with our Kerio Mail Server 6.7.0 patch 1. Had to add the line to allow unsupported devices as it was giving some connection issues and then worked fine after that. The problem has been with the syncing of the contacts. It syncs fine for about the first few syncs and then it gives an error on the phone "failed to connect to the server" But it syncs mail and the calendar perfectly. The issue is that the syncing of the contacts is second on the list of 3 items to sync as per the phone. So it syncs mail first - fine, contacts second - error and then calendar - fine. I removed my contacts from my mail on the server and it still didn't update on the phone. So wasn't communicating with the server as per the error. If I delete my contacts on the phone, it then connects fine to the server and I get my contacts back. Works fine for about a few syncs and then without adding or deleting any contacts I get the error message back.

I cannot attest to pin lock or remote wipe, but basic syncing of exchange e-mail calendar and contacts continues to work after I downgraded my $45 plan to the $30 plan yesterday. Haven't had a call from the Exchange police yet. Just an FYI in hopes to save a few people some money.

I use Exchange as my email client & I have used Exchange ActiveSync to connect. Everything is working well apart from when the phone has been in-active & is locked I am required to enter my Exchange password to unlock. This is required to use the non Exchange functions also, as you might imagine this is very tedious.
