Android :: Enable Device Policy Manager Silently
Nov 9, 2010
there was a way to enable the Device Policy Manager without getting the users consent? The examples I've seen say to start an activity with intent DevicePolicyManager.ACTION_ADD_DEVICE_ADMIN which results in a window being popped up on the handset. Is it possible to enable the Device Policy Manager without a popup window?

Is it possible to programmatically disable and enable the led indicator light on an Android device? I am not referring to just turning it on and off as in a notification. I did not see anything in the api that would do so. I am guessing this is hardware specific if it is possible at all.

As you may have heard Android Device Manager has rolled out to 2.2 and above. To activate it, go to settings and then tap Device Administrators. There should be an option to activate Android Device Manager.
To track it and wipe the data follow the directions: Go to [URL]... log in and then click the settings gear under your account info. There should be an option for Android Device Manager.
Be sure to read this too. Android Device Manager rolling out

I'm writing an android application that depends on network activity and the alarm manager sometimes waking the phone up from a sleeping state. My question is how can I reliably test this on device? Ideally, how can I force the phone into a full-on sleeping state. Failing that, how can I know for sure when the phone has fully gone to sleep? How do you test your Alarm Manager / Wake Lock / Sleep handling code?

I'm using Android Virtual Device Manager with an AVD Android 4.2 installed. The AVD configuration is like Whenever I clicked on the app Camera, I got the following error message
Unfortunately, Camera has stopped.I tried various solutions. I was thinking [HIGH]Menu->Manage apps->All tab->Camera->Clear data[/HIGH].should be able to solve the problem, but failed as well.
The only thing now I can think of is whether I need to change armeabi-v7a to armeabi or not? Should I use armeabi specifically for the emulator, rather than the real phones?

I have a service running a background thread. What I'd like to do is to show an AlertDialog initiated from my background thread. I know that this is not the recommended way of notifying the user and that it interrupts the workflow (as they can pop-up in any application at any time) but it's a suitable way for my use case. There is a handler registered with the background thread and showing a Toast notification withing the handler works fine. But after switching to an AlertDialog nothing happens anymore. My showDialog logic is silently ignored. No Dialog window appears, no log entry. It's a bit strange as I'd expect at least a log entry saying that I'm doing something wrong or whatever. Are there any limitations for showing an AlertDialog initiated from a service background thread? Some people seem to recommend a Dialog themed Activity to get a similar behavior.

My app suddenly could not create a directory on sdcard using mkdirs(), it was working fine before. As the method throws no exception, I have no idea what the cause is. I have checked for a duplicate directory/file of same name, and there is none. I did remove and insert sd card but to no avail.

HTC Sync (with cable to Outlook on my desktop) worked fine for a few weeks after I got the Evo and doesn't work now. Trying to start it brings up an error message "Unable to create device manager instance". I've searched the web and forums and have tried every suggestion, none of which work. Has anyone here had this problem and actually solved it?

getting Device Manager working on my new Galaxy S5. If I recall, Device Manager looks at GPS position first. If that is turned off, it rolls to WiFi. If that is off, it rolls to Cell communications. It worked well on my old Galaxy S2, even when GPS was off, it still found the phone within a certain range.
With my Galaxy S5, it doesn't seem to work when GPS is turned of. WiFi or Cell signal will not allow device manager to find the phone.

I am porting android to my own device now. I checkout the latest source code from android.git.kernel.org. I have successfully compilated filesystem images and burn those images to my devices. But i couldn't automatically mount my sdcard when android startup. The / sdcard directory is empty when i used 'ls /sdcard' command. I have copied the vold.conf file from development/data/etc direcotry to my device(/system/etc), but it's invalidated. When i read the source code(vold), i found the vold daemon relate to switch driver, device mapper driver and android gadget driver. Are there some document or information about how to configurate android kernel to support vold new volume management and wirte right vold.conf configuration file?

I was trying to get calkulins DE03 on my moment tonight, and since I've put dd03/dd10 on, I thought it would be easy but I obviously messed up something. i have the new 2.1 rom flasher, i have joeykrims 2.1.3, those dont seem to be the issue. the issue is now when I place the phone in download mode, I no longer get a data connection. I just get something called m900 under the Other Device category in Device Manager. i have no idea what driver I need to make this happen, and I certainly dont remember this from flashing it the previous two time. I tried to install the drivers from the Technica YT video, but that didnt seem to solve anything. when the phone is in Normal Mode, I can mount and do all sorts of things via USB, so clearly, this is a Download Mode driver issue.

I have a European GNex (4.3) that is not tied to a carrier. I also have a Nexus 10 on 4.3. On both devices, I have activated "Allow remote lock and factory reset" in the Google Settings app. However, while I have all functionalities shown as activated on the ADM web interface for the Nexus 10, my GNex is "stuck" with only the "Ring" function active. I have unchecked and rechecked "Allow remote lock and factory reset" and refreshed the web page, deleted the data from the Google Play Services app and rebooted, tried combinations of all of these, all to no avail. The ADM web interface continues to show only the "Ring" function for my GNex, with "Lock" and "Erase" greyed out.

I have tried with zero success to get a USB debug connection from a WinXP dev box to a brand X Android 1.6 tablet. I believe I had everything configured correctly on the Android and installed correctly on the dev box, but when the two are connected with a USB cable NOTHING HAPPENS; i.e. Windows finds no new hardware much less a new USB device; therefore, I cannot then install the Android SDK USB drivers on Windows and do the debug thing with Eclipse.
Either the mfg of the Android tablet device has disabled USB debugging and just didn't remove the UI that appears to enable it -- or I've left out some crucial step(s). (The device manual is 100% Chinese and I'm 0% Chinese, so it's no help. The tablet is very nearly, but not, the model A84 7" touch screen 'laptop' at 'www.lezestar.com' in case this helps.)
On the tablet:
- 'Settings/Application/Development/USB Debugging' is enabled.
- Tried 'Settings/Application/Development/Allow mock locations' enabled and not.
- Has 500MB internal flash 'hard disk'
- Has installed 2G SD card
- Firmware: 1.6
- Kernel: 2.6.29-002360g4f8dbbb-dirty
- Build No: 1.7.3
On Dev box:
- Windows XP SP3
- Device Manager finds no 'new hardware' when XP<-->Android USB cable is connected.
- Neither USBDeview.exe (Nirsoft) nor USBView.exe (Microsoft) find any evidence of connection with the Android
- Eclipse Galileo (3.5.2) with Android SDK (for 1.6) and ADV Manager.
- USB Driver package, rev 3. downloaded using ADV Manager.
Other:
- USB ports on both Tablet and dev box successfully connect a USB mouse.
- Tablet and Windows XP have been rebooted often.
Is permanently disabling debugging something that Android manufacturors are allowed to do and therefore I'm trying something that can't be done?
If the mfg has 'disabled' debugging, is there a way to work around this; e.g. download a tool that can change Android OS configuration to reenable it?

It's hardly one month that i bought an Xperia X8. Its silently restarting often. This happens 3 - 4 times a day. As suggested in the forum, i restored my phone to factory settings, but in vain.. the issue continues. Everytime i check Settings > About Phone > Status > Up time, i get a time less than 7 hours, which means the phone cannot run without a restart for more than 7 hours.. Anybody experiencing this kind of problem?

Can an Android application be programmed to set up a security policy on android OS? Security policy example that i want: app1 needs to be running to be able to run app2 or app3.
And then let app1 detect if app2 or app3 is being started. If yes then: pop up on screen and ask for authentication.(the policy should only be editable with the pin code of the user.)
