Android :: Droid App To Know When Another Application Has Been Started?
Aug 14, 2010
I would like my app to do something when another application is opened.
The current approach I have taken is to create a broadcast receiver that monitors all
android.intent.action.MAIN
events, but either I am not doing it correctly or the way I am going about it is incorrect. The section of the manifest looks like this code...
I included the launcher category just as a test. GetApp currently is only set to make a log entry when called.

I'd like to write sthg like a logger for my Android phone where I log whenever an application/activity is started respectively created. So it's not only about my own stuff but about all the stuff that gets started on the phone. Is there sthg like an intent flying around or any kind of stuff that I could catch?

My music application constantly plays music in the background, however I'd like to be able to detect when another application starts playing audio (such as the YouTube app) so I can pause/mute/stop the audio in my application. This will allow a user to continue browsing the web whilst listening to music, but then if they wish to watch a video at any point, they can do so without audio conflict.
One solution might be to listen for a broadcast which states when an application begins using the AudioManager. Does such an Intent Action exist? Edit: As in the answer provided below, there appears to be a method of detecting the loss of audio focus in 2.2 with AudioManager.OnAudioFocusChangeListener.

I'm developing an Android application that consists of:
a lightweight background service that logs events to a DB
a heavier GUI application that summarizes these events and displays graphs.
I'm having trouble creating the service part, though. The graphic application can use quite some RAM, and when it goes to the background, the OS closes it after some time of not being used.
The problem is, when the application gets shut down, so does the service. This is bad because this keeps me from recording further events. I don't care if the application gets terminated, but the service needs to keep on running.
I have tried numerous ways to keep the service alive, like having it use threads or a differently named process than the main app. Nothing has worked, and I have found no help on any of the android developer pages or forums.

Is it possible to stop all started services when the user hits the Home Button? I use:
startService(new Intent(ClassName.this, ClassName2.class));
stopService(new Intent(ClassName.this, ClassName2.class));
This means I will have to somehow add the 'stopService()' for 7+ of my app classes
I've researched this topic and I think there's 'onTerminate' but still not sure how this should be implemented.

Now I know this has been brought up before and I've followed the advice: tried turning on Google Talk, rebooting etc. In fact I can rarely get GT to sign in either but even when I do, it makes no difference to the apps I'm trying to download. When I first got the phone, I managed to download a couple of apps without problems but now I can't. Everything gets stuck on 'starting download' whatever I do. I'm trying it on a wireless network as it's rare I can get 3GS up.

You can see property action android:name= property is "android.intent.action.MAIN" and categoryandroid:name= is "android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" for all activities. When application starts up, it calls First Activity. Then calls useless Activity such as ThirdActivity or Second Activity. In this case, is my manifest.xml correct?Or, do I need to set another property to Second and Third activity? If so, what is that?I wonder manifest.xml file is right for my case.

I have followed the "Hello World" example from Google's Android developer's guide. When I try to run the application in the SDK emulator, nothing happens. The emulator startd up nicely, but after that nothing happens. I can't even see the application in the app tray.
I am using Eclipse with the Android add-on installed.

I am just starting to get setup for android development. I have installed pulsar and the proper sdks I think. I want to develop for the droid x.
I can't find any information on how to create a new project using the installed sdks. Shouldn't there be a project type for android? Nothing like this is showing up.
Are there any tutorials for getting started using pulsar for android dev?

I was talking to my husband when my Eris started vibrating nonstop! I had to shut my phone off like 3x. My gmail password is right and it still won't sign me in.it take a whole minute to call anyone on my phone list, I miss calls, when I go to answer my phone after two rings it ends call. And last but not least, my assigned ring tones don't play for my contacts, it only plays the default. I have tried everything. I'm wondering if i should take it to Verizon and get a new one.

Not sure what I did, but on powering up, I had trouble getting it to turn on. Maybe I double pressed the powere button after the power on had started, but as soon as the droid eyeball screen came up, all images on the screen were in negative. This continued through the home screen loading until I turned the phone off and restarted, getting normal colors.

I have a rooted Droid X on 2.1
After hearing about the crap Motorola pulled with the bootloader, I decided to wait on the ota update to Froyo until someone either figures a workaround, or they don't...to which I will update via the latest leak.
PROBLEM: After twice saying NOT to download this ota, I look down at my status bar and it shows something downloading at 10%...It's the syatem update!!!! I immediately pulled the battery, only to have the download continue upon restarting the phone. I am currently in Airplane mode waiting to hear if there is a way to KILL, CANCEL or STOP this download from installing!

While charging my phone today, I noticed that my LED started flashing and alternating from red to green. It was plugged into my wall and I was using it while it charged. I suspect this means Im using more juice than Im gaining because my battery was losing power. It also heated up more than usual. Returned to normal once I left it alone.

I got my Droid on Friday, the day it came out. Was working fine. Today, about an hour ago, my droid reset itself. Then started back up. when I got to my home screen, it reset itself. When I got to the home screen again, very shortly (less than 10 seconds) it reset itself again! And repeated this over and over. It never stopped! I can not even use my Droid!

It'll just start playing a song (always the same one) out of nowhere. At 4 am this morning it brought my wife and I out of dead sleep, can't have that. Also, while the song is playing, it isn't shown in the music player at all; it's like a ghost song and we can't figure out how to stop it without turning off phone. If we let the song play out, no other song follows. We just use the music player that came with the phone and get some of the music from Droid Tunes. I just downloaded a song using the Droid tunes and as soon as it was done, this ghost song played. We use AVG free virus on the phone and it doesn't catch anything.

I had Swype, all was good. Then it started freezing my screen, or misguiding the touch to the point that removing the battery was the only option. It was not a phone issue, because I factory reset and it works now. I had to because disabling Swype did not solve the problem. Is there any beta or anything out there?I CAN'T GO BACK TO TOUCH INPUT!

When you want to make a call - you press the phone button and the phone dial buttons pop up and on the top some names from the contact list. You can roll down to get the full list of contact names to select from...
My problem is that this dial list is too sesnsetive : it is enough to touch a name and puff it starts dialing right away. This way I started call by accident people that I did not really want to call. Can this smart dial be made less touch sensetive. Or better: an option when the phone will respond "do you want to call this person?" or something

It will start based on incoming SMS. While my application is running, I tried to use the browser application. Within a minute my application is getting crashed.(in DDMS log, I found the application process has died) And again I restarted my application, it is always getting crashed within a minute. I could not find the reason from the DDMS log. Someone can help me to figure out the problem.

I want a countdowntimer to halt on a menu and also when the user goes from that menu to another activity. When the user comes back from that activity or when the menu is closed, the timer should still halt. However when the user went to the home screen and clicks on the icon again, I want the timer to restart. So my question is, is there a way to detect if the user has just opened your application, or if the user comes back from another activity or menu?
