Apr 26, 2010
It is possible to deploy a build on Google Market filter by the resolution and handset?
For example: I want to deploy a build that works only on the devices that have 480x800 and only OS 2.x

I am working on a screen that needs to look fine at HVGA-L resolution as well as 640x480 resolution. Lets say I have a button that is 200 pixels wide and 50 pixels high on HVGA-L skin. When the same layout xml is shown at 640x480 skin, I want my button size increase proportionately. The hardware the app runs on supports both the resolutions.
None of the units that the android framework provides seems to have this facility. If I use px, then the button size will stay same. dip doesn't matter because it is the same hardware. sp is meant for fonts, not for button width/heights.

I have a program that should work on Android 1.5, but when it's run on newer devices with higher resolution screens, it should support the full resolution and not emulate a lower resolution screen. As far as I can tell from the documentation, this should be simple.
I just specify
code:.........
The problem is that if I tell Eclipse to compile for 1.5, it refuses to accept this. It reports an error (targetSdkVersion is an unknown tag) and refuses to compile or run. If I tell it to compile for 1.6 it works fine, of course. But if I then try to install on a 1.5 AVD, the program immediately crashes with a java.lang.VerifyError. I'm clearly missing something simple. How do I get it to compile an apk that works under 1.5, but still includes the targetSdkVersion tag?

My application may consist og 100Kb code and 800 Kb Database content. If I include a datafile with the 800Kb data and import it into an SQLite database under the initial run of the applcation, I cannot delete the data file afterwards and my application will take up 800 Kb unnecessarily. Is there a better way to include/import my data....? (I want my application to not depend on being online after download - so the data should be downloaded with the application.

I'm an android newbie having a lot of troubles with the android emulator. I have inconsistent luck in starting up the emulator, and no luck if I start it from within eclipse instead of from the commandline (it waits forever and never boots -- not even after 24 hours).
However, since I figured out how to get it to (sometimes!) start from the command line, I have a workaround to that particular problem. But I have no workaround for my latest problem.
When I try to run it:
CODE:................
But nothing starts on my android instance. MyApp doesn't even show up on the app list.

I am in need to write an application for Android devices that needs to access a large (~200MB) database.
What would be the best way to do this? Can I just stick the database in the assets folder? I have read of various limitations that apply to the entire application size and to individual resources within, especially on some devices... What are exactly these limits?
Is there any way to do this apart from a post-installation download from an external server?

I downloaded the Android 2.2 source code and try to build it. When I executed the make command, I got an error here like this build/core/java.mk:20: *** frameworks/ex/common: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. Then I changed the frameworks/ex/common/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7. Next place, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/jsr305: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/jsr305/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
Last one, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/guava: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/guava/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
By these changes the code started the compilation.
1. Why the error occured?
2. Changes which I did is correct or not?

I am about to assist in deploying a large amount of android device. The requirement is, that the devices (700+) need to be charged, configured and provisioned with the relevant applications for the end-users before delivery.
Device info:
Android 2.3.3
Samsung Galaxy SII
This is not windows mobile, so I am unsure if I can code/design a solution to avoid this enormous manual task.
Is it possible to code something for an sd-card that will be automatically triggered on insertion (as on WM)? This would then provision the device etc.
Is it possible to bypass the initial prompts - To my knowledge you will be prompted for entering the info for your google accounts?
do I then need to create 700+ google accounts?

I have had androids for over two years now and am getting more and more concerned every time I download an app and seeing that it wants to READ my SMS message and Contacts.
Is there a way I can disable reading of SMS messages or any one of the other permissions by specific apps, or all apps?
Are we living in a world where any "joe schmo" can upload an app the to the app store and wait for those inadvertent downloads and collect all your personal information, and that's after all the time we spend protecting our identity and personal details?

Since I'm really not a fan of Eclipse I'm developing my Android app by following the rules listed here: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/other-ide.html When I'm deploying with the 'adb install' command I have to manually uninstall the APK from the emulator every time or else the install won't work. Is there any way to bypass this? It's fairly annoying having to add this step in every time.

I'm trying to alter the default screen resolution of the Android emulator (and by extension, the Android device) to work at 1700x1200. In other words, I need the screen to be able to display unique points over that range. I have set the dimensions in my layout file, yet the device still defaults to 320x480. I've set different dpi densities, but to no avail.

I have an application which is basically a surfaceview, where height/ width is set to fill_parent. I run it on a htc desire, but when I check the size of the view (or the canvas I obtain), it says 340x533, so some kind of scaling seems to be done. Also, I load a bitmap, which seems to be scaled. Do I have to do anything special to run my app in full resolution?

I have tried a while ago to use these values to be able to have 2 different builds to cover all resolutions on Android Market: <supports-creens android:smallScreens="false" android:normalScreens="true" android:largeScreens="true" android:anyDensity="true" /> Unfortunately it did not worked. Although it is recommended to have one big application for all resolutions sometime it is not possible due to some time and resources constraints. The goal is to have 2 different applications Game and Game HD on the market and Game to be visible only for 240x320/320x480 devices and Game HD to be visible for 480x800 devices.
